    I’m glad you mentioned the Mollies being difficult to keep. IMO, they are probably one of most difficult livebearers to keep because some can be semi-aggressive and fairly large. Cory from Aquarium Co Op, also mentions that some are raised in brackish water overseas and have difficulty adjusting to water in the US. Because of this, if you’re going to get a Molly, I’d say try to find a local breeder.

    Corydora catfish really are awesome fish.... they are "bottom dwellers" but they play all around and they sleep in nice cuddle piles... mine do this thing where they will swim into the current from the filter and then tip backwards to "surf" it back and then repeat... like you can TeLL that they are enjoying life and playing. You will never regret any tank space given to accommodate corydoras I only have 3 in my 20 gallon high with some tetras and shrimp... I want to go up to 5 but I haven't been able to find more panda catfish local.... and if I had a 20 long i would've not even included tetras and just done like panda corydoras with pygmy corydora and some shrimp with a floating hornwort to let the shrimp get out of the bottom commotion

I’m running a hang on back filter as well as a sponge filter. I have a bubble wall that seems to have improved their overall mood. I even have 3 feeder guppies who just ended up in the shrimp bag. I let them stay too. It sounds overcrowded but the tank operates in shifts. My night shift cleaning crew is the hidden part.

    i realize this is an older comment, but mollies tend to be way more sensitive to water parameters. i believe they're actually meant for brackish water so they aren't really living their best lives in freshwater aquariums. if you simply just prefer mollies and have to have mollies, that's one thing, but if you're back and forth on either platys or mollies, always go platys imo. they are better in every way.

    I'm new to the hobby and started with 4 guppys and 4 platys in a 10 gallon. I underestimated how quickly guppys breed and now have 16 guppys and 4 platys. So I bought a used 30 gallon last night and I can't wait to start a whole new system in my 10 gallon as well as adding a new species to the 30 with the guppys. I'm thinking a pleco species (always liked how cool clown plecos look). I'm thinking cory cats and a type of gourami for the 10 gallon but we'll see!

    If you haven't already stocked your 10g, and are still leaning toward cories and gourami, I would really suggest one of the smaller cories, such as pygmies, so you can have a larger group, and a sunset honey gourami, which generally have a pretty gentle demeanour, and are on on the smaller side, but still give you that great pop of colour.

Instead, we got a 29 gallon fish tank with all of the accessories to get started. It was obviously somebody else's order, so we called PetSmart and they don't want it back. So, I guess we have a fish tank now! I haven't had one since I was a kid. This video was a great refresher! We are in the middle of purchasing a new home, so we are saving it for the new house. I was just watching this video for a second time. Regarding the comments on the tiger barbs and their tendency toward fin nipping and aggression, I'm a big advocate of snake skin barbs AKA Rohombo barbs instead. They have that same stunning black/orange stripe with an added green iridescence but in my experience they have absolutely none of the aggression of tiger barbs and they show no inclination toward fin nipping despite being kept with long finned tank mates, at least in my home. Snakeskin barbs are harder to find, but they are a great alternative to tiger barbs with a similar appearance, and mine have proven to be very hardy in terms of varying water parameters. (Also, as an aside, mine readily go for the Northfin community pellets, though it takes them a little while to adjust to new foods, whatever the brand.) I still see web sites that unfairly list the snake skin barb as "semi aggressive" and I can't help but wonder if this is simply because the tiger barb looms so large over the entire barb family.

    Great video. I’m a beginner getting ready to stock my 29 gallon. Curious as to how many of the breeds suggested can be put in the tank as well. For example could I put in: 6 Cory cats, 1 bristle nose pleco, 12 neon tetras, some nerite snails and 1 honey gurami? Or is that too many. Is there a rule of thumb for this?

    I think that is a good mix. If you don't have any cycled filter media, maybe get some Fritzyme 7 and add just a few fish at first. That will help avoid ammonia issues at the start.

    Hi. Thank you for this really useful video. I am just setting up a 160l (35gallon) aquarium and am new to keeping fish. We will soon start purchasing our first members to build a community. Can we get several of the groups at the same time and introduce them to aquarium together? Or should we get one type of fish and wait about a month before introducing the next group? If so, which groups can be introduced together or which are best to introduce first and which later on?

    If you have six guppies it might be kind of cool to let them breed? They can fill out a tank within a few months if allowed to do so. If not, you could easily have 12-15 in that size tank. Centerpiece fish with guppies? If your water is on the harder side that might be a little more difficult, but maybe a pearl gourami or honey gouramis? Keep in mind any centerpiece fish will probably eat guppy fry. You could even try a nicer pleco that stays under 6"? They would be fry safe.

    Hi! I have a stocking question as someone very new to the hobby. I have a 29 gal tank, and in it I have a glo tetra and also a boesemani rainbowfish. I did not realize they were schooling fish. I feel bad that they are alone. I am not sure if my tank can accommodate the numbers needed to school them and was hoping for your input. Besides the two of them, I have two female bettas and a juvenile angelfish, a red tailed shark and three mystery snails. How many fish do you think I could support in my 29 gal tank? Could I get enough to provide a school for my two schooling fish?

  • @PrimeTimeAquatics

    @PrimeTimeAquatics

    4 жыл бұрын

    Great question. I think you are right about the rainbow - they get too big for a 29 gallon. If you want to school something I would stay with the tetras. The red tail shark may cause you some issues as it grows - they usually get extremely aggressive. I would try to get to 6-8 tetras. Good luck!

    I think it’s important for anyone new to the hobby to consider male to female ratio of each species. If you do a good job of making a nice home they will breed. Or the opposite too many males might be more aggressive to fight for hierarchy.
