I think for most situations I’d still take the 40 breeder because I think that size is a bit more versatile, BUT, the 33 long is so visually interesting. I’d definitely pick. 33 long over a standard 55 any day. I don’t think you can really go wrong with either lol

I like both tanks. However if I was given the option of only one of them I would choose the 33L. Most fish defend there territory in a radius, a 40B allows for less territory since the footprint is more square. A 33L being the same foot print as a 55 has accessories that are easier to find and interchangeable with other tanks. Great comparison. I think both tanks have their place and both have benefits. Keep up the great work.

I never heard of the 33 long until your latest video about the thousands of fish you got. I looked it up and saw this video. I don't have space for this, but I really like the look because of the low profile. The only thing that won't be good is that I like the 3-4"of substrate. That makes the tank even shorter.

TL of 3.5 in, which is basicly the only information about this fish that is consistent on the internet. Although gracilis juveniles in Tanganyika-specialized shop (imported - no breeder in my area) are absolutely gorgeous, I am afraid I couldn't provide tank bigger than 20G if they grow this huge. Excellent comparison, along with helpful species info. I have a 40 gallon breeder in which I house 2 large fatty boy fancy goldfish. For goldfish, I prefer a tank with a larger footprint rather than height. When I upgrade for these boys, it will be a 180 gallon because the height and depth are manageable for me for maintenance and they will get more length to swim in. Then the 40 breeder will become a grow out tank for about another year or year and a half for my two youngling Ryukin females. What will I do with the two Ryukins when they outgrow the 40 breeder, well we will see. Most likely I'll hunt down another 180. My other tanks are smaller, but I do want to upgrade my biotope tank to a larger size, so most likely the 40 breeder will be those inhabitants' new home. It's fun to plan for the future. Than you for your awesome videos! Stay safe and heathy!

It really comes down to perspective in landscaping. A 33L can better capture the feeling of a river or section of an underwater landscape. When you want to show the territorial behavior of your group and have a 'slice of life', the 33L is the pick. 'Course the fish can't be too large or tall, or they will appear confined in the space. White Clouds up through small cichlids, yes. Anything larger, no. The 40 will give you a 'close' or 'portrait' perspective of a 'section' of an underwater environment. Something like a section of mbuna rock work or small cove with a couple of featured inhabitants. For a comparatively inactive swimmer like Discus needing height for security would be ideal in a 40. A simple plant or branch arrangement yielding front-to-back depth where the fish can recede from the front glass is the ideal use for that extra 6". Or something like a community a Platies where a dark forested area could hide babies.. But each choice can become limiting when it comes time to change stock in the tank. Think of how great a tank that is harder to find would be: 72" X 18" X 12" - a 65 gallon that you could really artistically stretch out with. In Jason's priorities, two 6' tanks on the wall instead of 3 shallow 4 footers. Many, many more choices available in something approaching life size perspective.

Petco 40 breeder is $55 after tax. We run 24 in our little fish room (only 1 fish room currently its just little) and we love the 40 breeders, we also have 30 long`s divided in to 3 sections (Walmart Mars systems) and they are great also. Some are not divided yet (but will be). Both great tanks for a simple fish room and easy to 3 stack a 40 and 4 stack a 30 long if you are running sponge filters. Looking back if we had the room I would have either got off the floor higher and done 3 stacked on each or 2 for 40`s and 3 for 30 longs. Great video it really explains it well to the average person and had this been out I may have better planned out our first fish room. lol

Good points. I am a big fan of not putting tanks really close to the floor - I tend not to look at them and they are harder to clean. I'm also a big proponent of having lots of working room in the tanks. My original stands all ensured 12" of room, but some of my later builds have less and I regret that.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics Yea everyone reading this should take it honesty and advice from 2 fish keepers. I agree 100% I can admit myself we have 2 Breeding Prs of Angels on a bottom row. 1 we feel bad about they are social and the other hate everyone so they tend to be happier same with a couple Blood Parrots. We have Red Jewels and a peacock tank at bottom level also. They got moved to the top and blossomed in to social fish (over time), We have a Koi and some Gold fish in a bottom tank also right now. The Koi was a rescue and the gold fish started as feeders and turned in to pets. Bottom row (near the floor) tanks tend to get forgotten. I discovered Snails in a tank last night. Karisa (this is Neal) was given some snails by another breeder and she did not know where to put them, she saw an open tank and dropped them in. These poor guys have been in there a few days not being fed. because Karisa is just under 5Ft tall I tried to keep the top row a little lower. We got used to the smaller working area between tanks but that bottom row gets neglected a lot. It also runs cooler (much cooler). Anyone reading this please take the time to make a single rack to test when starting a fish room. test run that layout for a week or 2. Go in daily, spend time finding your personal issues with the top and bottom tanks. Do you need to be higher on the bottom? Do you need a step ladder for the top tank for daily stuff like feeding? The time and expense wasted on a temporary stand will be worth its weight in TP (Gold again in the future).

My groups of Rainbow Cichlids have done very well in a group. If you keep planted tanks, they will eat every green thing in the tank - and quick! :-) The only issue you will have is if they start to breed - they may be hard on the other fish at that point.
