The BEST Dreads Advice!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you’re having hair problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 problems but the dreads ain’t one.
I’ve been doing this a while now… a little while, and sometimes I get asked to break it down, to answer simply, ‘what’s the greatest piece of dreadlock advice you can give?’. Now despite having a page filled with tips and advice, my number one is an easy pick, and that is: stop worrying about them.
Now that may at first seem like a cop-out, but stick with me here. When my dreads were young, they were just like everyone else’s young dreads - loose, frizzy, MESSY, and just like most people with young dreadlocks, I worried about them. Every day I’d be checking them out, stressing over each loose root, every patch of loose hair. All this worrying made me pretty uninspired, and made the progress seem impossibly slow, if not nonexistent… then one day, I just stopped worrying.
I’m fully aware that telling someone to stop stressing usually has the opposite effect, and to truly become comfortable with something takes both a combination of time as well as persistence, but only once I stopped worrying over the small stuff was I able to appreciate the big stuff.
What you’ve got to remember is that dreadlocks don’t NEED you, they’ll go about their business fine on their own as long as they have their time and space. I always advise to just to make sure you’re washing and drying the dreadlocks properly, separate as required, and anything else is just an extra. Treat it like any other hairstyle… and by that I mean generally ignore it while you’re getting on with your life, and things just go a lot smoother. When I stopped antagonising over each and every detail and actually let time do it’s thing I was able to actually notice the positive changes when I did take the time to check things out… and when the changes became noticeable they became a lot more encouraging, and so you replace the negative stressful cycle with a positive encouraging cycle. So there’s no doubt in my mind that the greatest thing I ever did for the progression of my dreadlocks was to stop over analysing, to let my hair be hair, and just to get on with my life, trusting that they’d do their thing.

Thanks for the reassurance! I'm on day #2 on my dread journey, and it's been quite the ride already. Being told it's okay to ignore what my hair is doing and just let my dreads do what they want to do is something I needed to hear. Especially tonight when my scalp started itching, and now it's go time for making the peppermint cooling spray. Really digging your channel and how there's both education and inspiration in every video.

I've had my locs for about a year now. Naturally, my hair is very curly, so particularly at the roots, my dreads are wild. However, being biracial, the natural texture of my hair has allowed my locs to knot up very tightly in a relatively short amount of time. Though they still have some maturing o do, and though they have not yet reached the asthetic ideals I have for them, they are quite ropey and fairly strong, and I love them. Your videos are what finally convinced me to go ahead and begin my journey, and I really appreciate the time you take out of your day to maintain our channel. Thanks!!

So true! This is my second dreadlock journey and I just came across your account because I was worrying about the parts I'm not a fan of will always be wacky. I took the more neglectful route this time and I knew the process would be a bit slower and a bit different. Next month is my 1 year and I was stressing about all the loopidy doops, but you are so right. They will always be evolving and maturing. On my last set I did them myself but did more frequent maintenance, there were also ones I didn't like but later on some of those became my favorite. If you are one who believes about locking energies into them... there's no need to lock that worry in with them.

My dreadlocks are 3 weeks old! Wooot woot! :) I agree with your best advice - it's pretty much what I do! Love them and let them be, as they grow and change and evolve. The only "maintenance" I do is to: wash them, dry them, separate them and palm roll (I've been separating and palm rolling only after washing, which for now is once a week, but may go up to twice a week soon). Much love, and keep on dreadheadin' :) ♥

I watched several different people giving advice online, even hearing things from friends.....I must say that you give the best advice I can find on the internet! Now at 15 months they are dreading at the root and I have a good 3 inches of knots. My problem at the moment is flat dreads. I watched your video over the subject so I will now try not to worry so much about that, haha.

My dreads are going on 5 months and I generally stopped caring after 2 months. Once I realised that maintenance was futile, I just left them alone and stopped micromanaging them and focusing on them so heavily! I still ring my fingers through them a lot (it's becoming very much a habit) and mentally sort of criticise them by feel as I go, but try to remind myself to stop worrying and cast it back out of my mind. I have faith they'll do what they have to do!

Amazing advice man. I am at my 18th month mark, and I remember stressing about EVERYTHING for almost the entire first year. There is something to be said about letting them grow without worry and just be. Love your videos. Much love

Thank you for this video! It's good to be reminded sometimes about not to worrying. Excellent advice, I say! I've only had dreads for eight months and they are a little bit crazy at the moment. Fortunately, I see a lot of people around the town I live in with mature dreads and this also reminds me to be patient :)

My dreads are 8.5 months old :) And leaving them alone is definitely the best advice! I had a hard time in the beginning because they were so loose and messy!!

Love watching your videos. I've had on and off locks for two years (professional reasons to brush them out) but I've finally started my last set that will stay for years to come! Anyways, thank you for being you and sharing your knowledge! Watching videos (mainly yours) helps keep my hype about them as they begin the messy stage. 😝☺️

I love watching ur videos. Even tho I know u don't have dreads anymore. I still love watching. U give out the best advice and ur funny. I was thinking about dreads for a little while. So what I decided to do is put in fake dreads just to see what they look like on me and I always love the ideal to not do anything to my hair and still look cute with them in. So 2 days ago I started my dreads. I did the twist and rip method and by the roots I did inter lock. Just because my hair is so straight. I totally agree not to stress about it being messy. I am the type that I like things neat. But I am trying just let it be. I hope I still love them for the next several months

when I first started my dreads I was excited but a little scared, and I did worry about them alot. now, 3 years later, I'm like... eh, as long as my hair is still there, I'm cool with it
