Yea, a problem with dreads is - strangers think you want their opinions!

this didn't start with "greeting, salutations, hallo " I think the Internet is broken.

It's very stressful and often worrying to have young dreadlocks, but time solves the vast majority of their problems :)

I have 40 skinny dreads I don't have thick hair so it's what I'm working with but my roots and tips have come loose leaving not much dread Lock in the middle . I'm one week in will waiting fix this?

When you shower the water will pull loose hairs out. As long as you don't use a conditioner the showering won't undo your dreads, just pull those loose hairs down, which is what you want because when they get pulled down - although they'll look messy, it will allow the loose hairs to group up and over time they'll start locking. Young dreads are supposed to be frizzy and messy, it's just an inevitable part of the process and not something to worry/be afraid of :)

I'm so glad to stumble across a video like this. When my dreads were young, I stressed so much. I watched so many technique videos and I wasted stupid amounts of money and time on products and tools, working for hours to get no results. Then I finally woke up and realized all I needed is- patience! Thanks for being real :)

Man idc if uv cut ur dreads or not. ur still my number one source for my dread info. And yeah I can't keep my hands off my hair when it's young

I started my dreads a year after you had them like for four months after and cut them off. Couldn't deal with all the shit I was getting in High School for looking like in a bird nest haha. But now I live in the middle of nowhere so I'm considering doing them again, after watching your videos I feel like I'm more confident this time more around with the knowledge you put into your videos. I didn't know nearly half of this information, using wax and etc. Going all natural this time around.

people say something every time they see them saying i need to redo them -_- it gets a little irritating but i just nicely say its normal haha

Wonderful video Chris. I have noticed if I have questions, if I wait just a few, u post the video lol. I have nothing but time as everything is started. I get questions and by following u, I'm able to answer...:). About a month now and my dreads are doing awesome! Digging the way it seems urs keep changing lol. A new look in every video :).

Thanks! :) Natural dreads can start to section off and shape up much faster than people expect, it really depends on the hair type as some people can get away with not brushing their hair for long periods of time... other can't ^^ I'm glad yours are coming along speedily!

I have young dreads, like newborns...I have had to rebackcomb my hair 3 different effing times bc my hair was so smooth/healhty when I started that my backcombing kept falling out, and I had to turn to wax in minuscule amounts to hold them in place, but finally they are sorta there. I have SO many loose hairs and weird spots and loose roots and I was starting to question my method and how well I had done my hair ( I did it by myself) but watching this really boosted my confidence back up!!! Can't say Thank you enough!

Tara Davis lazydreads is great. I just put my locks in a week or two ago, he's been my major resource for information. I have really "silky" hair as well and my tips are so lame lol!

Yeah, good point. The best thing to do is just to leave them be and even forget they exist. Then progress comes so quickly, it's amazing ;) I love your dreads by the way, they're very inspiring!

Hey man, just wanted to tell you how awesome you are. I'm two months into my second set, and I'm not getting rid of these ones, maybe ever. Lol. We'll see. I used twist and rip, and they're completely natural and I couldn't be happier and not really looking for advice or anything, but if I had watched your videos from the beginning instead of some of the crap I did watch, things would have turned out better I'm sure.

Really need to watch this every few months to remind myself to leave my dreads alone. Just over a year now and while most of dreads are tight, still waiting for loose hair near roots to combine.

Good advice sir! Back when I started my locks I had all these concerns about how they were forming and how they looked but learned to get used to letting them do what they do, I would never have unlocked hair now, could never go back. Shrinkage was dramatic for me though, went from mid shoulderblade length to about my chin, in about 2 weeks. Locked up tight though! Just was a surprise.

Mine are somewhere around 67 months in this video. Loose hair is definitely still normal at 10 months, it's normal to always have a little loose hair no matter how old they are, but there's nothing to worry about at 10 months. I normally say that it takes a good 12-18 months for dreads to mature and so at 10 months they can still be messy and that would still be normal =] Loose hairs left from cutting are going to need to be left alone until they grow long enough to stick into a dread again.

I went from chest length hair to less than chin length! But some people get very little shrinkage. There are a few factors involved :)

Don't keep redoing them. T&R doesn't create dreads, it just lumps the hair into sections. Over time these sections mature and lock into dreads. If you keep tweaking, fixing and redoing them you sort of reset the clock on those hairs, they need time to lock themselves up and if you force them into an awkward/unnatural position they'll just keep falling loose again.

In the neglect/freeform/natural method of forming dreads the dreadlocks form out of completely normal hair. In the other methods; backcombing, twist & rip etc, the dreadlocks form in the exact same way, the only difference being that the hair is sectioned into lumps via the starting method. Over time these lumps become the dreadlocks. So it really doesn't matter that they're loose, it'll still all knot up given enough time.

Personally I'm using the shampoo from rockinglocks at the moment. You can try and rub the tips, this can sometimes help to speed them along and you can spray them with salt water to try and encourage them to shrink. Most likely they just need more time to mature and lock up though.

I'm waiting to see how these few dreads turn out in the next months before I do anything else. I think that redoing the loose patches of hair would be best, because when my dreads were first T&R'd they weren't done very well, and the sections seemed too large in many places, so they came completely loose very easily. The patches of loose hair have sectioned themselves better and I think T&R them again would help them lock faster than just neglecting them, esp. the hair that isn't dreaded at all.

It's normal for them to try and stick together and they'll do it more when the dreads are younger and softer. You just need to keep pulling them apart to avoid them becoming congos. It's easiest to do it while the dreads are wet from a wash. If you have a particularly troublesome bond you can always get someone to carefully split them with scissors.

Cheap rubber bands have been known to break down and turn into a strange goo that gets stuck inside the dreads. Loose hairs will also lock over the top of elastic bands and seal them in. Elastic bands also rub a lot and can break hairs, both under where it's sat and when they rub against neighbour dreads. You can obviously use whatever you like on your hair, but I don't personally ever recommend anything that could possibly cause damage.

By the way, on the subject of tips... I like loose tips in general, but mine are RIDICULOUSLY long. Like half of the dread with some. That bothers me quite a bit sometimes (when I DO NOT forget about them), and I wonder if they will ever lock up at least like yours... but yeah, they're 10 months old, so there's still plenty of time for them to mature and stuff. Anyway, great channel! :)

I don't regret starting non-neglect. I regret taking advice from a salon (if you've seen my timeline you'll know why), but I was 14 when I started, I don't think 14 year old me would have been prepared for neglect dreads. I wouldn't recommend neglect dreads for someone already trying to deal with high school. Now that I'm 20 and much more sure of myself, if I started over I'd go neglect. Though I recommend Twist and Rip to most.

Congrats on the two months! =] They'll be messy for a little while yet, but that's normal. Before you know it they'll be locking up all by themselves!

I tend to call dreads that haven't matured yet young dreads and each persons set will take a different length of time to mature, but it's usually somewhere between 10-18 months and then after that they're all fully locked up and will continue to lock all the new growth by themselves.

Over the first year it shrinks and then doesn't grow much at all (it shrinks as fast as it's growing) and then it grows at a constant rate from then on. Dreadlocks grow slight slower than normal hair because the hair doesn't grow straight down, it zigzags inside the compressed dreadlocks.

The tips will dread themselves to a certain extent, they get rounded off a little from day to day activity and so it is possible for some to blunt themselves, but this takes a really long time. Usually tips are a little loose or blunted via crochet. I cut my dreads once a year so they don't have time to blunt, but they don't look too loose because the loose tips are cut off when I trim the dreads.

Mine never really had a shrinking period because they were started very poorly and were way over backcombed. But it's different for different people anyway and has a lot to do with your hair type, hair length, how often you wash them and what you wash them with. Lots o' variables.

I've never heard anyone being told to wax for that reason.... but yes, I would recommend to stop using it.

For my Locs I take a crochet the loose hair in smaller locs

If you redo any of the others they will get started over, so it's up to you. You might find that after you re-T&R them they get back to this stage again after another 5 months... whereas if you had left them they'd be 10 months old and likely a lot more mature.

my dreadlocks are about 20 cm long and almost 2 years old but the loose hairs in the front/ forhead is most annoying.. going to try stick it into my roots hehe

@lazydreads hey man. Today is my 3 month mark. And just to let you know you were a big help with your videos and i greatly appreciate them. My question is about roots. I started my dreads by croteching them i didnt really section them i just grabed thehair i felt comfortable with and started. I wanted a more naturl look but with out going with thr negelect method. They are pretty well locked so far but some of the roots are doing great andstarting to lock up but others are straight hair what can i do about that. I dont really want to crotecht any more but how long should it take for the roots to start locking? Or what could i do to help? thanks dude probably the best advice on the whole of the net everyone keeps asking me are your locs fallin out it really gets on my nerves and people keep on saying get them redone arrrgh lol don't want them to look uniform just a bit neater being rasta should of gone neglet method but my hair is so fine and silky so I used backcomb and then they were crocheted and have jus left them to do there own thing at what month did yours start to shrink up sorry to ask you so many questions peace....

That shampoo is fine as long as you don't use too much of it at a time, but the same can be said for all dreadlock shampoos. I'm not a fan of DHHQ but their shampoo is perfectly fine. It will, like all dreadlock shampoos - residue free or not, result in some build up over time and a deep clean will take care of that. I wouldn't recommend going to just water because it won't break down oils and dirt. Use a shampoo and then deep clean every month or so.

hello brotha man, I've had my dreads for about a year, year and a half . I've watched a few of your videos now and you give great tips . however, I'm wondering if you root flip for so long but want to stop, what is the best way to go about doing that so that the root stats right?

It's hard to say what will happen to them, if they're very tightly crocheted then they might never relax back so it's up to you whether you want to trim or to give them more time, there's no right or wrong way.

It's normal. Dreadlocks take months and months to form, they're a mess before that.

How old are they? Maturing can take anywhere between 12-18 months usually, sometimes a little longer. I'd wait and see how they are then before forcing them to do anything. Chances are that they'll work themselves out. Also if you try and cut the tips off of young dreads, the new ends will fray out and become loose anyway.

You really don't need to put anything into them or onto them other than soap and water. It's not so easy to wash products out of them and most things like waxes and gels will just get stuck inside of the dreadlock and then dirt will get all stuck in it. So it's definitely highly recommended to just use residue-free soap/shampoo and water.

What is the difference in growth rate of your hair? Like does it grow faster/slower when its dreaded or natural?

How old are your dreads? I normally wash mine 3 times a week, I try to wash them every 2-3 days.

I wouldn't worry about them. If you leave normal hair long enough, it'll dread and so loose hairs on a dread will eventually lock up the same way. Meanwhile the dreadlock itself is growing and gaining length and so if they're still problematic you can cut them off if you wanted to once the dreadlocks are long enough.

My 'dreads' are a few days old, and I noticed some are knotted closer to the roots/scalp than others. If there is 1 or 2 inches of non dreaded hair before the knots start will it still mature properly? or is that too much space for it to work? (sorry if this posted twice, I got an error the first time)
