I spent a lot of time thinking about an example set by a family member. He had commented his interest in my hair and noted that he himself had had long hair in the past, but as he got older he'd looked to simplify - to distill things down to the essentials. He had a weeks worth of the same, durable white t-shirts and black pants, and he buzzed his hair. To him these elements were not essential to achieving what he looked to get done in the day, and so he simplified it down. Whenever I found myself wrestling with complexities in my life, or whenever I felt there to be too much on my plate, I tried to relate to this view. I began to feel that time spent waiting for my hair to dry, or opportunities avoided because complexity introduced by my hair were taking away from me achieving the best me. At the time I didn't connect with it, but I have found myself understanding it more and more in the years that followed. I try to say yes to all opportunities that present themselves and I look to remove all potential obstacles between me and the things that may further shape me. I'm not quite at the point where I'm going to buzz my own hair - but I do have a repeating wardrobe.

Today’s day 5 since I T&R’ed my head (except undercut.) When defining my why and considering them, THIS is a part of my journey. I’m hopeful I honor them and myself with patience and love as they develop and change. And when it’s “time” I’m hopeful I can “let them go” the same way as a minimalist I let go of other “things” in my life. Your videos are a favorite resource for me and as I’ve developed my ideas and plans for creating and maintaining your last self and I line up. Thank you for all you’ve done. And thank you for this video too.

When I decided to get dreads 4½ years ago, I did a lot of research about the pros and cons of having them. Your videos helped me a lot 🤗 My biggest reason for getting dreads (besides loving the look of it) was the maintenance. I was so tired of maintaining my long loose hair, brushing it, putting it up, dealing with hair ties and hairpins. So for me it has been very liberating to get dreads 😀 I find it much easier to have long hair and maintain it now 😁 And I love the look of it and how easy it is to twirl it up in a bun, or tie a ponytail with my dreads 😛

@@LazyDreads What are you up to these days and have you re dreaded? I came to your channel just under 3 years ago when I first ripped and twist. I do get impatient with mine. I use cotton to sew loose hairs and then sew the sewn hairs into the dreads. After a month or so other hair has grown around the cotton making it unseen. I first had dread about 31 years ago. They were rip and twist but I just left them alone and split them every so often. At 56 years old I might soon be dead lol so that's why I am impatient. I have been interlocking but keep meaning to freeform. It's difficult though as I am diagnosed ocd. Hope you are well and enjoying life. Merry Chrimbo.

I removed my 5 year dreads last year in February. Yeah the first 2hours were amazing, but then. I instantly regretted it. And i have been regretting it ever since. I have pretty thin hair and i need to put so much effort and care into making it look acceptable (for work)... so much money for products, getting up 30min early in the morning to wash and condition and treat and blow dry my hair, not being able to leave the house without "doing" my hair (anxiety, body dysmorphia). I wanted to see who i was as and adult without dreads and turns out: a stressed adult constantly anxious about how i look. So I'm getting new dreads started right now and I'm extending them with my old dreads. I've got hair down to my butt again and I'm loving it!

It took me so long to brush them out, i couldnt remember why i started to, BUT... you put it so eloquently, over such a long time it does change.. however the experience still stays with you, that mentality of the freedoms. Its like full circle too, peoples reactions when you put them in and then the reactions when you remove them, and you feel like you owe this explanation.. its amazing how the experience of dreds gives new insight. Also, glad to see you back, would be great to see more of your travels or photography 👌... general shenanigans🤔

your very young and I dont think you need no explanation to anyone. I am one year into my dread journey,I'm 46 yrs old. I feel so free now with my hair locked. I had really curly, dry frizzy hair .it was way.more fuss to control my hair everyday vs what little I have to do to them now to maintain them. I have 2grown kids,3 grandchildren,I'm a tattoo artist. I have way more time now with dreadlocks than my usual everyday hair routine. we all get them or decide not to for different reasons.I have greatly enjoyed your videos and they are very helpful. your videos will always be there to help anyone starting out and so forth. I appreciate all that you have contributed to dread community. I also enjoy following you on IG, you live a very interesting life, very talented. Continue to be great, and your hair does not define you. If our hair begins to define who we are,or I habits us from enjoying life ,then it's time for a change. I bet that big chop felt amazing, and you have beautiful hair. whenever i have had some very trying times, you videos inspired me to not freak out and to relax and let them do their thing etc. alottt if great advise and i thank you!. ..ps.profile pic is an old photo of faux locks, not a posser, just haven't updated it nor care too.lol. you look just as handsome with or without them for sure.

I have to tell you...I am SOOOO thankful you made this video. Here's the deal: I am a wife/mom/nurse in my *ahem* 30's. And I have wanted dreadlocks for YEARS, but was always afraid of the feedback from others. I have been watching your channel (and others) for quite a long time. Over the past few months, all of those channels (about dreadlocks) are covering removing their dreads. It really forces me to sit down and consider WHY I want them, if I am REALLY prepared for life with them, and all that goes with them... Anyway, long story-short, I'm grateful for your channel and I'm grateful for your insight - regardless if I dread my hair or not. You're a gem. You do you, broseph. 😊👍🏼👍🏼

I've been wanting dreads for about 5 years now, but was never ready to commit until 4 months ago today! I've decided to go with semi-freeform with the towel rubbing method. I've always hated my hair and would always shave it all off. Always feeling that it wasn't the right decision while doing so, feeling like a failure that I could never grow my hair out long. So it's definitely understandable why you no longer had a good relationship with your hair. Your videos helped me understand what I could come to expect and how I should care for them though. Truly an inspiration for me to grow out my hair and start dreadlocks at the same time without waiting for my hair to be long. I've now gone 1 whole year a week ago without cutting my hair along with 4 months of starter semi-freeforms today. I feel so much more liberated and confident than what I did before and I hope it stays that way for many years. Maybe there will become a day where my hair and I no longer get along again, but for now I'm enjoying it.

Although ive enjoyed your videos and dread head videos in general , i cant help but feel that making a channel dedicated to ones hair in particular dreads has the unfortunate effect that you define your whole persona as that of a person who is who they are because of their hair and that can take over your perception of yourself in that " i must have them otherwise im not the person people see me as" . Ive had dreads for 8 years more of less ive never kept track of the time coz who cares, i agree they can get in the way but ive never felt anything more than its my hair and this is how i feel to be. Im glad youre happy with the change youve made and i wish you all the best with your future endeavours. Peace

Thank you for finally getting to this topic. I got from this, what I think anyway and what I've always said to people about my dreads. It is a journey, granted a visual one. And it is maybe symbolic about our own personal journey in life. And YOUR journey with the visual dreads, was over and it was time to move on without them. My first set I had for just over 5 years. And as you said, it just was a love hate relationship. I cut them off and after about 8 months went back with a new set. I'm on a new journey now. Not sure how long. For now it feels right.

So glad to see you again, Christian! Oddly enough you had a HUGE influence on how I were MY locs ... freeform. You helped me to embrace the freedom of the freeform method. That being said, when you combed out your dreadlocks I have to admit my 1st thought was "The young folks always do." At the time you were in in a regular trend of folks getting rid of their dreadlocks in one way or another. Younger folks have more to worry about than older folks do. I will be 51 this weekend .. I'm literally twice your age. I am not angry that you removed your locs, its your hair, hun. Anyway, at my age I am not as much worried about my looks or possibly losing out on employment and the like because of my hair. I am basically retired and doing what I wanna do. Anyhow ... I am not angry with you for taking care of yourself. I would have been angry with you is you HAD kept your dreads for ANYONE but Christian. Know what I mean? I certainly hope so. Take care Christian. I still follow you .. for you .. not for your lazy dreads.

During the video I thought that even without the dreadlocks, you're a person, whose spirit belongs to the group of ppl who have dreadlocks (i dont know if it even makes sense) and then you just said the same (that you remained the same person). I always thought that this something is kinda like a community, and there are ppl who have dreads and dont belong, and ppl who dont have dreads and still belong to this 'world'. I'm happy for you and hope that your youtube channel stays alive :)

I personally experienced that sort of “awakening” when I combed/cut them off in the past, because I too was younger and was in search of “who I was “ at the time; and it’s left me with this sentiment… We go through phases. Some come and go, while others last our entire lives. When you stop enjoying something, you should listen to yourself. And just you. If you’re constantly having to convince yourself that you have to first serve something ornamental, however deep the meaning, sometimes it’s good to let it/them go. Hair grows back. Sometimes it doesn’t! So enjoy the journey while you can.

you are actually the person i looked to when i was starting my dreads and the following months on how to take care of them. I am now battling the decition to cut my dreads after 3-4 years. They are becoming a bit annoying and headache-inducing, but I love them so much and I dont want to cut them but I want to change my hair so bad. So I get where you're coming from and it is indeed just hair, for most people it will grow back. When my love-hate relationship to my dreads will become mostly hate I will cut them, but now there is still to much love.

I completely get it. My locks are only 3.5 years old and I am still learning from them, but I don't have a time line set in keeping them. When they are more work than joy or more of a hindrance to my life than what they add, I will remove them. Be that 2 years or 15 years from now. You put a lot of thought into it and have gained a lot from them and it sounds like you did what is best for you. You can always grow them again if you ever feel the need to walk that path again. Thanks for all the information and incite you have given and the resources that are still there for people taking the dreadlocks journey.

I was told I'd wouldn't see my 40th Birthday due to health reasons. When I turned 40, I promised I would finally get dreads, after wanting them most my life. It was a spiritual gift to myself. I've had them 13 years now. Trimmed them a year ago, they were past my knees. The pain they cause my neck, head were just too much. They are now in middle of my back. A lot lighter. There are so many points you made which I've been contemplating myself, the itchy scalp, super dry scalp. Shampooing and drying them for hours and hours....upto 12 or more! I so miss having water hit my scalp in the shower and just massaging my head! I sometimes think that's it! I'm cutting them! But when I trimmed them it was sooo hard I don't think I could completely remove them. Maybe one day. But just not ready yet! BTW, I'm a photographer and when I would go shoot gigs sometime the look on clients faces when a dreadhead shows up is hysterical. lol

I've had my dreads for 25 years and I'm 49 now, I think that like most things, fashion, hair style, music, relationships change as you get older. Your dreads did their job I guess you could say. I was older when I decided on dreads and haven't regretted it ever (except the drying after washing, we will all agree on that). But I agree , once you start living life according to whats best for your hair, it is time for a change. Interesting & honest video, thanks!

I've had my dreads for 7 days now, previously before I grew my hair for 2 years to get the dreads I shaved my head with a complete 0 buzz cut for 15 years. Your reason for removing your dreads and me for growing my hair are actually pretty similar, so I can understand your reasoning. Do what you do for you man it really doesn't matter what others think or say as long as you're happy.

good vid. personally (as a guy), i think you look just as good with your long hair how it is now vs. your locs. i thought the locs were cool too, but tbh i kinda prefer the long hair. you're voicing the exact same concerns everyone does...friends with locs i've known said all the same things, especially about exercise and swimming. the freedom became a cage. they started out wanting to have a wild, carefree hairstyle...and it ended up being more work and worry than any other hairstyle they'd ever had. good vids dude. keep up the great work.

You do you Christian! You have done more than your hair share of knowledge sharing for the dreadlock community online. Your videos REALLY helped me when I was starting out. I understand what you mean about having them for convenience and then having them become inconvenient. Luckily, for me that is not the case. If I had my hair this length and it wasn't locked up I would spend way more time washing and conditioning all the time, brushing everyday etc... Compared too a little oil on my scalp twice a week and washing my hair every 2 ½ weeks or so. I also understand your take on how society has changed. It's different for everyone, I'm sure. For me, I grew up in a very multicultural area and this whole idea of cultural appropriation a lot of people here feel is overblown. Everyone's hair will lock up, that has been said. Everyone is also aware (or should be, anyways) that 'dreadlocks', along with any natural style worn by POC have been looked at as dirty and gross traditionally and then when worn by say, a white Marc Jacobs model is all of a sudden 'edgy, hip, trendy'. And it's true that if you're lacking strong levels of melanin you can get rid of that style and go back to being "normal", whereas if you're black, that's not really an option. Get rid of the hair sure, but your skin is the same. I myself have a weird relationship with race/ethnicity because I grew up knowing my dad was Puerto Rican and darker skinned and yet I was raised as white because of the shade of skin I came out with. It's only been within the last 5 years or so I've been doing my best to reclaim and reassert my Boricua identity of sorts. I say of sorts because I've been connecting with a lot with what I've been learning about the Taíno, not just modern PR culture. I also adhere to some Buddhist principles, but I love having hair... One of the reasons for me getting dreadlocks was I could have long hair, but not have to spend as much time looking after it or worrying about it, less ego/vanity. I know I'm going on and on here and it's a damn KZread comment! Like I said, your videos really helped me when I first started. They will always be there to help people in the future. I don't want to sound blunt or mean but, it's not really your problem if people are upset that they are just now starting their journey and yours has ended. You started a whole online community, we can be there to help them! I'm in the Facebook group. Same name as on here, just with my middle name Allan. Like I said, you do you! Your journey is your own. ✌️

I combed mine out slowly, it took a couple months. I also did it because I felt that whatever life stage I was in while they were growing, I learned the lesson and it was time to move on. It wasn’t emotional, and it wasn’t because I didn’t want them or didn’t like them. I just wasn’t the same person spiritually, and I do believe they were holding the energy of the past I had graduated from. I’d hear people say that locs hold energy and memories, and I would kinda roll my eyes because I’m a logical person and that stuff was too abstract to hold any weight. Until I felt it. So I totally get it. I have nothing but warm memories of them, and I don’t feel any type of way about having them or not. I’m just at peace with myself in whatever package I happen to be in at any moment. ❤️

Much respect and let me start with I've loved and greatly appreciated the info and insight you have given to myself and the rest of your viewer's about your knowledge of locks through your own experience. Having said that, I've had my dreadlocks for 8 or 9 years now, and my death hawk (and later dread hawk) cut for about 13 years and I've loved my locks everyday with no regrets or desire for anything else except maybe occasional hair dying lol. For me this is my hair style pinnacle and anything that is too change with it will have to occur by natural means (such as hair loss). But life's everyone's own personal experience. You took on the full experience possible with your locks, after 10 years there's nothing much left you could potentially have enjoyable to try with them lol. And if they were a nuisance at any point and you're happier now that your lock free, then that's what matters in my opinion. As a fan and thankful viewer, my full on support to you being happy in your choices. And hopefully people will one day stop needing to over examine the reason why others choose their personal aesthetic. Much love.

I just recently cut my dreadlocks of 6 years. While I'm about 12 years older than you, I really do innerstand how you broke it down. For me I started mine in my early thirties... it is absolutely a love/ hate relationship. I loved certain parts of the freedoms it gave me and also despised other parts of the freedoms it lacked. So one day I woke up, decided to do it took the scissors & cut. I had wanted to for some time but would put it off and 6 months would go by and the same would happen. I'm still getting used to how chilly it is without my locks but at the end is hair & if I ever do it again I'll know what mistakes to watch for... Thanks for your videos, they helped me a lot. It has been 6 days without my locks. PS- did you save your locks?

My hair has always been thick and super tangled. I remember when I was little the first person I saw with dreads and wanted to do them ever since. Like a lot of people, I lost my job because of Covid, so I thought what a perfect time to start my journey. Time to be free!! I’m doing neglect dreads and I wish more people would be more open about it. I’ve heard it’s a love hate relationship, but I didn’t expect to feel totally powerful one day and absolutely ugly the next. I didn’t expect to be triggered by old men in grocery stores and be made to feel like I’m back in jr high being made fun of. I didn’t expect to have such joy over one and such hatred over another. I DID NOT EXPECT THE SHRINKAGE OMG THE SHRINKAGE. I started them because I’ve always wanted them and I’ve always had anxieties over cutting my hair (thanks again, jr high), so I wanted to let go and see what happened. It’s been a great experience (the part where you said you knew not to look in the mirror…LOL relatable!). I appreciate your honesty because I didn’t expect the negativity and felt like I was doing something “wrong”. Still, excited to see where the journey goes.
