I don't know if any of you viewers noticed that the 3rd jar she filled with cucumbers, she forgot to add the tsp. of alum to that jar 😮. It is the jar that she stuffed in the smaller curly shaped cucumbers to the top. It's probably not too late to get that one and the alum to it then just put it in the fridgerator. I'm not sure, though. Hopefully, she catches the comment 🤔🤔❤️🫢

Tipper, I enjoy watching you prepare foods. My wife and I both helped our mother's get pickles ready for the "fruit cellar". What wonderful memories. My mother passed back in 1970. Sadly, the two mothers never met. My mother-in-law lived to 106, and passed in 2012. What a great Lady she was. She lived with us for 25 years - such a blessing for our children. Thank you for this video. It took us both back to our childhood.

Thank you for this recipe, Tipper (and Justin)! Because if folks ever saw how mass-produced, store bought pickles are produced, they’d *never* buy them again. They’re left in HUGE outdoor vats, *uncovered* … no lie… dust, bird droppings, bugs and all can easily get into the vats. For anyone curious, just search “commercial production pickle vats” to check it out for yourselves. Sorry y’all… I seem to be the bearer of regrettable news too often, it seems. 😕

A great tip is your recipe should use half the amount of dried herbs to the full amount of fresh herbs. So if he used 1 tablespoon of dry dill you should use 2 tablespoons of fresh dill. That works perfectly for all types of recipes.

Great video Mrs. Tipper! I would Love to learn how to can and make pickles one day. My Great Grandma canned, but she was the last one in the family who did. My Mom knew how, but didn't, because we didn't have a garden.
Very interesting...when I made dill pickles I'd fold the dill and the stems and put it in the bottom of the jar followed by the garlic and alum....I always used only the small ones. I am anxious to see/hear how the bigger ones turn out and the cut ones! Great video!!
I made these a month or two ago after listening to you all rave about them. They are the best pickles I’ve ever made. The garlic turned blue which was pretty funny, but not harmful. Thank you so much for sharing this!!
Thks for sharing the recipe. I have been looking for a dill pickle recipe because the ones I looked at were so involved. I have made bread and butter pickles using the Rebel Cannon way. UNKNOWINGLY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In other words I read an easy recipe and tried it. Worked for me. Never thought anything could happen. If my garden produces enough cukes I will try this for sure. I love crispy dills too. And yours did look so pretty too.
I made them a few months back. You’re right about having them for a special treat. They are delicious! I have a hard time putting them back in the fridge because they are so tasty!
Happy to see the pickle recipe today. I've got old cookbooks that call for alum. Fell out of favor I guess. One of the interesting things about open canning is lots of other countries do it. I have cooking friends in England, Greece and Australia that only do open canning or Hot Water Bath for non pickled veggies. Some can't even buy Pressure Canners. So lots of folks in my canning group feel the USDA requirements for canning are the "very safest" but canning the old-fashioned way won't harm you. Can't wait to see the unveiling of your pickles in a few months. Blessings to all!
Thanks for the video. I have to try canning pickles at some point. Perfect time for this video because I'm making a batch of my refrigerator pickles as I was watching this video. 🙂

Thank you for this video, I want to try this recipe. I just last week or so planted some cucumber plants and I hope they will produce enough for me to try this. It's so late, I do not know what, if any, we will get. The plants do have some little yellow blossoms coming along and the plants are growing. I have asked many people if they grew up eating (dill) pickles with cake. Growing up in my house, whenever we had birthday cake particularly, we had a jar of pickles out on the table too. We most always had yellow cake with chocolate icing and a pickle alongside of the cake. Most people I have asked turn their nose up at this idea, but I grew up thinking that everyone enjoyed dill pickles with their cake - LOL! I don't know, perhaps it was just my mom and dad's family. Or, it could have just been my dad's taste buds which he had some odd combinations he would put together that you do not really see. He would put fruit cocktail on his tossed salad and I think on vanilla ice cream too. He had been known to put yogurt on top of his vanilla ice cream too claiming it made it healthier 😆. Of my two older brothers and me, only one out of the three of us, my oldest brother, turned out to be a picky eater. He did not like watermelon or tomatoes, but he loved his ketchup. I feel bad for people who do not eat these good things, they are missing out. And I still like a dill pickle with cake, birthday cake especially : )
The very best. Thank you so much

This is almost exactly how my grandma and our whole family have always made dill pickles. The only difference is we don't use garlic and the vinegar and water ratios are different. I was so excited to see this video. I have great memories of my childhood sitting on my grandma's porch swing with my cousins eating dill pickles! For some reason she mostly canned slices, and yes they stayed crunchy. I think the alum is the secret. We ate so many my grandma canned them in gallon jars😂 I know you all will enjoy them all winter. We also make the 14 day pickles, I shared last year about how we put the green food coloring in the 14 days. We love using them in macaroni salad. Thanks for sharing!

My cukes finally started coming on so I made 4 quarts of these dill pickles. I did add a jalapeño to them. I still have some brine leftover so once I get my bread and butter pickles (my favorite) made and my lime pickles (my husband’s favorite) made and I if I still have cucumbers, I’ll make some plain dills. I want to pickle a few jars of green beans and make some zucchini hot dog relish, then I’ll be done with pickling. Hopefully, by then the big maters will be coming on and I can can up several dozen jars of tomatoes. Thank you for the recipe! Have a great week! TeresaSue.

Hey Ms Tipper. Have a few questions for you . Why are you using regular cucumbers to make your pickles ?? Just something you all usually do ?? Not sure if you know , but there are special kinds of cucumbers, called pickling cucumbers . Ones that are for making pickles . They are a lot smaller than regular cucumbers , but like anything , have to pick to correct time to get desired size you want . Why don't you cut into spears before putting in jars ?? You would most surely get more into each jar by doing that . Now my mother made pickles , but she jarred them after the fact if you will . My mother had several stone crocks she used to make pickles in . She made dill, sweat , bread/butter, garlic and probably a few more . Now I don't remember the whole process, but the cucumbers would soak in the solution for however long they needed to. Then they would be jarred . Mot sure if they were officially canned after that or had to be or not . Just that they soaked in those crocks for a while . I remember when I was about 8 or 9 back in the '70's , my mother gave me a dime and told me to ride down the road to so n so's house and get here a bunch of dill . We lived out in the country and the lady down the dirt road had a huge garden she sold stuff out of . I rode down there, presented my dime, told the lady what I wanted and rode back home with my bunch of dill in hand . My mother made pickles ever year it seemed . So often , I got real tired of eating bread and butter pickles . Think she put them in the crock whole , but cut them up before putting them in the jars . Not sure about the sliced ones though . My job was to boil the jars before filling . I had a wooden platform I stood on in front of the stove , my gloves and tongs . Would put the jars in the boiling water, set the timer, wait , timer ding , ts kg e them out onto a towel and start over. Same with lids and rings . Then they would fill the jars up and seal them Think why my mother made pickles all the time , is at one time she worked for a pickle packing factory Tuscola , Michigan was home to Dykehouse ( SP) pickles . out front by the road they had a bunch of huge wooden vats, if you will . That they soaked the pickles in . Going to my aunt's house in Tuscola, we always went by there, and you could always smell the brine when they were making pickles. My mother was a pickle packer , probably among other jobs there . She won factory awards for the fastest pickle packer !! HA HA HA They have been out of business for quite a long time. Funny though , most of their pickles when out of state and to Canada . Not even sure if you could buy them around our town. It would be interesting to find out if the crunch of the pickle matters if it remains whole, or will it still crunch if it had been cut up first . Let us know what the verdict is . Your cucumbers are different that unusually see , not the usual all dark green skin , like you find in grocery stores . Also, those pickling cucumbers usually all have all those little bumps all over them , that's what I'm used to . When you plant cucumbers, do you pick your seed brand / type by what they will taste like. Look like or how big they will get ?? I myself only eat cucumbers in pickle form , after they have turned from a cucumber into a pickle . Which is my next question . After you jar them , how long do you have to wait , till they transform into a true pickle if you will ?? Till they don't taste like a cucumber but a dill sweet pickle ?? My mother's crock pickles usually sat for a while before jarring , and always a towel or something over the top . More to keep stuff out than in I believe. We would always go lift the towel to see what we could see , and get caught and yelled at to leave those pickles be . Lots of memories there . Hope to hear a few responses from you . Take care !! BigMike

I would wait at least a month before eating to allow them to fully pickle. Hope you have a great day!

So think I`ll buy some locally & make a few jar. Love the Andy episode too! But here`s a really good laugh for ya`ll and if hubby knew I was telling this..he`d kill me! We hadn`t been married long.. both of us being from Ohio..but my heart was always in Ky, which is where we met. That`s where my grandma taught me the basics of canning. Now HE was a city boy thru & thru! Well, he got transferred to a different state & we moved out to the country for awhile & had just enough space for a small garden. I couldn`t wait to play in the dirt again! I planted potatoes, tomatoes, onions & green beans. When I`d planted my cucumbers he asked me (bless his heart)..if I wasn`t gonna plant any dill pickles? I laffed so hard the tears were rollin! TRUE STORY!!

Thank you, I will have to try this! I had the same experience as you when we first started gardening & canning over 30 years ago. Oh I made a BIG batch of canned pickles & I was so excited to have that many jars to store & eat. I worked so hard on them, & in a not air conditioned kitchen! They went to waste because they turned out all soft & mushy. :( tried a few recipes here & there & still got soft pickles. A couple years ago I tried "refrigerator pickles" & those made us happy! The funny thing is that it is about the same recipe you have here. They remind up of the brand Vlasic & they crunch when you bite them. Yay! But, alas, a person only has so much fridge space. So! I must try to make these! Thank you! Thank you!

Thank you 😊
Those look so good I love pickles especially dill pickles. 😊
12:33 I add garlic to the dill pickles I use for potatoes salad and onions for eating dill pickles. I also eat the garlic and the onions beside using them for flavoring. Onions are a very healthy food to eat.
Thank you!
Thanks Tipper! ❤

Glad you enjoyed it!! I did make one mistake 😀 the recipe calls for 1/4 teaspoon alum and I used that but said one teaspoon. Hope you enjoy!
My Aunt Dorie’s kitchen always smelled like dill in the summertime. She constantly sought to keep her pickles crunchy. Honestly, sometimes they didn’t keep their crunch. We’re up to our ears in cucumbers currently, so I’m going to try making these. I’ll go watch the originator’s video as well. Thanks for sharing this recipe, Tipper.
My grandparents grew dill and made dill pickles but were in spears and the 14 day sweet pickles ❤️Great memories
