Hi Mandy, chose this seemingly straight forward dish as my first go at Wok / Chinese cooking. Thanks to your clear explanation and advice I now have a problem! My partner decrees I cook the Chinese now as well as the Indian and Italian. So thanks for that (English irony)! One question I may. When I slid the beet into the very hot oil as instructed the oil (1 tbsp) spat and splattered everywhere. I think maybe I had either the Wok to hot or Should I have drained the excess marinade off. Otherwise 👍

So I tried it with a few swap outs, yellow peppers too, no chili’s but red pepper flakes, ground cumin instead of whole, pork in place of beef…but I have to say the marinade was the best ingredient, the meat tastes soooo good. After it was all done, I added chinese rice noodles, and the great taste was gone. I’d make more marinade to add at the end. Also, if you don’t like heat, don’t add any hot peppers at all. My mouth is screaming a 3 alarm fire right now!!!! And yes, it was easy to make, but mas en plas please.

  • @SoupedUpRecipes

Baking soda tenderize the meat in a different way than cornstarch does. It is not velveted but the meat does become soft and tender.
