The rather squat tower with its lancet windows suggests it dates from the early 13th century and houses a ring of six bells. The ring are mainly the work of J, C & W Pennington and dated 1770. The Treble cast by William & Charles Pannell dated 1835 and the 4th re-cast by John Taylor in 1956. Taylor's rehung the bells with all new fittings in 1939, the frame, which is cast iron, is dated 1940. The Tenor weighs 9-3-12 in the key of F, which is rather low for a bell of that weight.
The bells themselves are rung from the ground floor, and the ropes fall through a carved vaulted ceiling. Although the bells handle well, they are odd struck and are not the easiest to get good striking on.
Here, we hear the bells being rung from outside in the church yard and are being called through part of the peal known in Devon as the 60 on 3rd's. This was part of the winning test piece at The South Devon Ringers Association Inter-Deanery, which was held on Saturday, 20th April 2024.
