The parish church of St Eustachius has early-C14 origins and has been rebuilt, enlarged and enriched on the proceeds of the Tavistock cloth trade since then.
A church dedicated to St Eustachius was established on this site by 1265, and possibly as early as 1193. It was replaced with a new church in 1318 by Abbot Robert Champeaux of the Benedictine Abbey of Our Lady and St Rumon, which stood immediately to the south. The Abbey was founded by Ordulf, Earl of Devon, by charter of King Edgar in 981. It was subsequently sacked by Danish invaders and rebuilt.
The last major restoration of the church was by the notable architect John Hayward in 1844-5. The church is certainly worth a look around.
The bells are notable too, in 1925 John Taylor and Co cast the back 8 of the present 10, they are a wonderful octave, which in my opinion are still the better ring. In 1998 Andrew Nicholson had 2 trebles cast by John Taylor bellfounders to augment the ring to 10, he provided the frame and fittings. The 10 bells are no doubt a good ring but are a little indistinct in the ringing room.
