I am completely here for the 4 hour "what is a photo" episode! Can you bring Dieter back for this?

Just bring Dieter back in general, I miss him so much
As a music producer who has been producing, mixing and mastering in Logic X and FL Studio on the M1 Max MacBook Pro, I laughed so hard at this part and I literally cannot agree more with what you guys said: 10:44 - 11:04 "What is the use case for the iPad? And now, again, the hardware suggests that it is an expansive list of use cases and to some extent it is, right? Like, some people I am sure produce music in Logic exclusively on an iPad. Those people are causing themselves an enormous amount of pain but they're choosing to do it and that is their right as Americans."
I'd buy an iPad Pro today if the new iPadOS has a "Mac mode" like what DeX is on Samsung tablets. Just press a button on the Magic Keyboard and enter a MacOS-like environment with windowed apps.
The lack of a laminated display on the base iPad is a dealbreaker.
iPad mini remains a product in our lineup
The big difference between iPad and iPad Air is that you can edit videos on the iPad Air. The iPad Air has the power and RAM to do the grunt work that a laptop can do.
If Apple unveil macOS for the iPad then we are cooking.
Omg was this first b-roll?? I’m so thankful for the team sharing the emails on the screen while they were being spoken about. Thank you thank you! (No sarcasm). Wonderful episode!
I would argue the biggest day for the iPad since the first iPad was the first iPad pro in 2015. not because of the iPad but because of the pencil. the pencil feels like the only really strong successful direction for the iPad for creatives and the ipad 2 or first air might be bigger but the introduction of the pencil is definitely a bigger deal than anything we saw today. (So was the first iPad mini. it's kind of a low bar)
I used to live in Racine for several months! Fond memories of the town even though I couldn’t imagine wanting to live there again lol
I mean I kind of expected no iPad OS improvements when WWDC is coming in a month.
Me before listening: I wonder why this episode is nearly 90 minutes long? Me after 3 minutes and learning of Racine WI pranks: oh, that's why!
I thought for a moment that "Property Brothers" was a new nickname of Warner Bros., but apparently it isn't, but it absolutely should be from now on

I came back here a week later to listen to the song inside the lightning round, but I also got one of the new iPads with a Pencil Pro this past week. I can say that I sincerely hope the squeeze gesture doesn’t go the same way as 3D Touch. Not only do the haptics feel great and very convincing, the squeeze gesture is already proving extremely useful.
I would say the thrust for thinness is something apple hasn't really prioritised in the last few years. iPhones and MacBooks have become thicker for example. I think they just couldn't innovate in any other ways with the new iPad Pros. It's just a very mature product.
On the Magic Keyboard - please let me know, why can't we get the F-key shortcut for fullscreen in the KZread app?

Isn’t the base iPad screen not laminated? Haven’t seen one in a while but it’s hard to go back to a non laminated screen, they just look worse
I LOVE the Touch Bar. I really wish I had one on my M3 MBP. I used the Touch Bar every day on my 2017 MBP.

The m4 in new iPad Pro is not that much of increased performance, but what is actually easier from logistics and manufacturing point of view, One CPU architecture then multiple.
its strange that so many folks didn't get the ad. nothing was being destroyed. its just a metaphor for everything that the iPad is capable of. not that its taking anything away or destroying anything just show casing its amazing capabilities.
Even though it wasn't acknowledged when it happened, really appreciate that Alex did the Star Fox reference. It was the first thing I thought of when I saw this new feature
I get really really irritated when all these critics say “Who really needs an Air? Just buy a Pro!” The Air is EXACTLY for me. I’m an artist & the Air is the more affordable Pro. The Pro crosses the line into overkill [for my needs] so I’m very pleased with the Air. It’s my Goldilocks tablet.
iPad Pro is like that private jet we all own. Incredibly powerful, but it never actually leaves the runway.
Man everyone is just huffing the hopium about iPadOS getting a big update next month. Ever since iPadOS was split off from iOS they’ve used it to avoid having to bring features to the iPad the same year as the iPhone. iPad had to wait a whole year for widgets and the freakin journal app! If the rumors are true that iOS 18 is going to be one of the biggest updates ever with AI integration then there’s a 0% chance that Apple will also devote the resources for a massive rethinking of iPadOS the same year

Rumour is that this event was to set the stage for the game changer changes the new iPad OS will unveil on WWDC. Hopefully the major revamp will make the iPad hardware useful I am excited for WWDC and what it could bring to iPad .
FINALLY! SO EXCITED TO HEAR THE DISCOURSE
Re: the dongle... Your kids don't need to be on electronics while you travel.
Yeah, I thought the same about the Apple ad. Just last week, two AI services called Udio and Suno was released, that can create music out of just AI prompts. Like Alex said, the art and music industry is in anxiety over technology taking over their jobs, Apple is just not reading the room right here, even when we all know how this AI story is going to end eventually.
Why would you need a new processor to drive 2 displays when both displays are displaying the exact same thing at all times? That’s not processing power, it’s a memory copy

My problem is that my 2018 Pro 11” was like £800ish new. If I want to upgrade then the 2024 11” Pro is £1128(considering I’ll have to buy a whole new pencil). That’s a big price difference. If I want to spend about the same I can get a 12.9” Air. Cool, with the M2 this is perfect for my use case. What I don’t understand is why I have to give up four-speaker audio, Pro Motion display, FaceID and the ability to use a perfectly functional Apple Pencil 2nd gen?? Throughout my whole time being an Apple user, there’s always been sensible upgrades where the path ahead is clear and there’s a couple of options for which device to buy. This time I’m left clueless.
no headphone jack on a device they want people to use logic on is honestly pathetic.

The iPad Pro is the gateway to the Vision Pro and iPadOS is the foundation for Vision OS. There is a possibility that the Pencil Pro will also work with Vision OS. The tablet formfactor is still a challenge to every platform; Windows OS, Android OS, Chrome OS and IPadOS, none have truly delivered. Microsoft will hopefully get it right with Windows on ARM thanks to Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus. This competition will force Apple to accelerate their iPadOS and Vision OS software strategy. Google could just merge Android for tablets with Chrome OS such that Chrome OS is implemented as the desktop mode like Samsung Dex. Does Pro mean Professional or Productivity or both?
I think the new iPad Airs are a big step forward, because they offer more screen space and more storage than before at a more accessible price point than the iPad Pros did before. Also, I would always suggest to buy an iPad Air over the standard iPad if possible, because the M2 processor in the Air supports Stage Manager, which really improves the usability of the iPad, especially with the bigger screen. Also, the M2 is more future-proof than the A processor. Finally, the Air now also supports the new Pro Pencil with the new functions.
What’s this blue thing they’re talking about ?
I'm glad we live in the timeline where I can blame Nilay for all of the 32 hours of the Snyder's Cut
That song is the end is absolutely amazing “you didnt leave us alone “
I am here for the deep Racine lore
I get the sentiment, but I’m definitely someone who churns off of Netflix. I haven’t had Netflix in a year, and I might buy a month soon to watch one thing. I oddly haven’t churned off of AppleTV+ or the Disney/Hulu bundle. But Netflix raising prices every six months has made it really easy to drop for a while, especially since they also love cancelling your favorite show after a season or two.
18:32 so I’m not an iPad Pro apologist, and won’t be until they fix the big glaring issue with the iPad (hint: it’s not hardware). However, Apple understands that portable computers (yes, the iPad is a portable computer) needs to be thin and light. Especially the iPad since you hold it a lot.

You’re being way too complementary to Microsoft to suggest that could engineer anything like the iPad Pro… Sure the vague concept bears a likeness but the reality of Microsoft’s hardware is very different.
unironically i’m a college student who is now failing to cruise on my parent’s subscription bc of password sharing and i’m gonna subscribe to netflix for john mulaney special reasons. stream everybody’s in l.a.
Love the new iPads. Gonna buy the new iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard and pencil pro. Luv it
A 13” device does not have the same functionality as a 10” device, even if they had the same cpu/ram etc which ipad and air don’t
bro.... of course the macos will work on the iPad! apple made you think that way, but If they do it.. everyone would just accept. I've been using touchscreens on windows for years... it's a god sent
Your gold play button is crooked. There, now you know.
Na dude Netflix was the first one I cut, most expensive and ad-supported doesn’t let you use your phone or a chromecast 😂 I’m not turning on my XSX, PS5 of finding my Roku remote every time to watch ads
Ipad 10th vs Air, go for Air. I have de Ipad Mini and the A chips are worst than the M1 or M2.
Every single one of you just disregards that netflix is also pushing to take over crunchyroll and that crunchyroll is the largest in the anime space

There is no need for apple announcements anymore unless there are revelatory new updates.
Every new Apple product release makes local news, it's basically just advertising, it's not news.
Paul
I use a painting app with a fragile proprietary file format. Specced up m1 12.9 can’t handle it. No way am I spending that money because for what? The Apple Experience is dead.
The Verge need to do more polls - what would you buy, IPad Pro, keyboard and pencil OR MacBook Pro w/ mouse?? If most people only want a sheet of glass in Your hand, why would they want macOS? Maybe people want the best? If it does have macOS - it should be only utilised when usb-c’d to a display. Otherwise they will end up having half baked version that people will still moan about…
I laugh more listening to this podcast than the comedy ones in my sub. Keep up the great work!
I’m an Art Director & Illustrator. I love this new iPad Pro and the ad for it. The ad doesn’t bother me what so ever. It’s a creative concept. To say that Apple is killing creativity is wild. Those props are most likely used not working and/or made specifically for the ad. I understand the discourse tho but we’re really speaking on ourselves if that’s what people saw in the ad. It would never be the actual intention of Apple to ruin the arts. I also get Nilay and friends frustration for the iPad in general. Apples creative creator culture kind of took a backseat to the IPhone years. Also you have to realize Nilay has been reviewing the same iPad and same OS functionality for almost a decade at this point so I get the frustration 😂 I’m very happy with the new Pro. I also hope they do push the chip with new software changes.

The constant condescending comments from Nilay are so frustrating. He moves to shoot down any positive comments from his colleagues as well. "I can't see why the air is meaningfully better than the normal iPad" If you need a keyboard, get an Air or higher. You answered your question. Apple make the normal iPad as cheap as possible for every day users. It's that simple. Since when is choice a bad thing? Capabilities are the same from a computer 3 years ago, to today. Why does the iPad have bigger scrutiny?

When you guys as tech reviewers say that no one really needs the extra power and upgraded hardware of each new iPad, you’re kind of missing the whole point about consumerism and capitalism. Honestly, nobody needs the latest version of anything. Take the iPhone, for example; it at least gets a camera upgrade every year, so Apple has an excuse to sell new models. But for most other products, there's no real reason to upgrade. Apple, like many other companies, makes a lot of money from these unnecessary upgrades.
I disagree with the “0” take about netflix i have never ever paid for Netflix until this month and that was because you can share accounts and even after they took that away i didnt buy a Netflix account because theres nothing on netflix that isnt on somewhere else or that i cant get illegally 😂😂😂
The whole iPad ad whatever is so overblown, but how did you measure the negativity and not include in the article?
30 minutes in and they are just going in circles-
The “8GB is enough in a pro” guy is very much an Apple D rider
Your analysis of streaming becomes very shallow when you realize you didn’t bother to check out how these services work in the rest of the world, like the eu. Things are completely different. We have different bundling and pricing (I assume). I pay 5$ monthly for Max, 5 for prime, 8 for Disney+. Netflix is out of the question for me at like 14$ (and it’s a complete wasteland content wise). Almost 3 times the price of other services.
Streaming sites can keep asking for more money. I’ll cancel it all and invest in more hard drives. Pirate and stream internally. Give me value for money or I’ll go back to your real competition. Piracy. Thanks.
I think you guys are too concerned with dunking on whatever new product you are reviewing. For instance - The new iPad Air is basically the old iPad Pro without the UltraWide lens, Lidar and the ProMotion display, things that arguably don't matter at all (books, movies and games don't need ProMotion: 60Hz is fine) but WITH the new landscape camera, the new pen and a price tag of 599 and a new 13 for 799!!. (Oh, and with Touch ID on the power button instead of FaceID, something I prefer.) I also think you are not seeing how the new Pro model won't be the PREFERRED laptop for a lot of people, and I am talking about for professionals, too. The M4 chip is a real powerhouse and that is a really light and bright device. Yes, they didn't pre-release iPad OS, but you didn't really expect them to with WWDC around the corner, did you? The promise of these devices far exceeds your snark. (On the other hand, Alex's take on streaming is right on the money 😆)

they’re discussing the product as it is today, and as of now the M4 vs M3 vs M2 vs M1 all have essentially equivalent experienced performance on iPads because the software limits the range of what you can do to use all of that power. they fully acknowledge and appreciate the engineering but are basically saying it could be so much better with all of that power! which feels more positive/constructive to me than a mindless dunk
40:30 Rare L from David Pierce. It was just such an oddly violent and very wasteful ad. It didn't show a flattening, but an outright destruction of very beautiful objects. Maybe if it was CG-ed or something else, the concept might have worked.
