So two things about this video, well three. One, looking out for customers’ bottom line is one of the whys you build up loyal customers. Two, I live in central Florida and I hate the dual pressure switches. My logic is that the low pressure switch opens and closes way more because it’s part of the normal control circuit, whereas the high aside pressure switch is typically used as a safety and gets used way less so less prone to failure. This way, if you use two separate switches and one fails, especially the low side, you can easily pump down and swap out the switch. And third, great video, along with the spaceship one too lol

I also strive to see the 'big picture' and notice potential problems I can head off before they complicate both my customers' lives and my own. I don't work in the HVAC field, but IT. I also have an underutilized Associates degree in Industrial electronics. HVAC has always been interesting to me though and I really enjoy your channel and have learned a lot. In a previous life when I was responsible for a bunch of restaurant units I wish our HVAC company was as thorough and conscientious. There are a lot of 'hacks' out there in every technical field.

Honestly, I don't think you're nuts at all. I'm the same way. I would rather look over the entire customer "ecosystem" when I get called for a specific problem. I don't even view it as a sales opportunity, I view it as informing the customer so they are aware and can make a decision. Sometime it turns into a teachable moment for the customer. But it's all about giving your customers the opportunity to make an informed decision. We need more people like you in the world!

So my experience of fixing problems before they get bad is that the customer does not really appreciate it in the moment. It's more of they appreciate it when they realize that down time is more expensive than scheduled maintenance. You can know when maintenance is going to be, but you don't know if when it will give up completely if you never have it maintained

I know when you're in residential the customers can definitely tell once they get someone that cares vs someone that just wants to hurry up and leave or just sell them a unit. They just have to experience a good one to tell the difference. In Illinois as an appliance technician I had customers that never had anyone that cared and when I was there they let me now that. Always made sure to have me come out from then on too.

Since your customers are in the desert I recommend putting dabs of dialectic grease to maintain a dirt/moisture barrier on the internals. In fact I recommend doing this to anything you feel needs it. Plus the grease can be used in ice machines and a host of others applications. Home Depot carries a nice one in a pressured can. I used to live near the beach and I used it religiously on my old air cooled VWs. Never had electrical problems afterwards. Also I always change pressure controls when I do a comp change, it's too risky to leave it to chance. The customer is already paying a big chunk of change for a comp etc so the PC is just added insurance. You'll sleep better at night. But yeah if a tech isn't worrying about their past calls, then they're not very good ones or just don't care.

I love your videos! In fact I love them so much that I would like more videos in the future, and therefore please please don't hold a metal object (a wrench in this case) when flipping breaker where the breakers don't have a full panel cover around them :) P.S. could you some time elaborate a bit about why pumpdown systems only use the low pressure control to cycle the compressor, and not also a control signal? Sure, the low pressure control should do the job but if there had been a control signal (say a dry contact relay output on each indoor unit) then the compressor would at least had shut down when no indoor unit was calling. Could of course still cause negative pressure, but would at least save the compressor for running at negative pressure for long periods.

I think it’s important to try to save a customer money and not try to bank a vacation fund after every call or job. You were there for an ac unit first and then found the walk in issue, made more money then expected, saved a future Saturday or Sunday call for a good quick fix, you should be proud. I’ve worked under people who ignore the other stuff, and I couldn’t say anything when i was younger, but I definitely do now that I run my own calls. The company morals you’ve been standing on should be adopted everywhere.

@11:47 You can never be sure whose prices with whom you compete. I remember plenty of work where our lowest possible price was still too high for someone, and they went with underqualified fools. And I think: the customer suffers when their work isn't right. I MIGHT ADD that having to drag a recovery machine and tank (and ice tub) to the roof and back is energy you could spend doing better things. Save your energy for when it's truly needed.

I hate it when the pressure lines are installed like that. I’ve found when the LP and HP lines are run in that flexible hose you can just get vice grips on them and crimp them close to the pressure control to swap them out quickly and not have to mess around with recovering the charge or putting service tees on. Less than ideal but works in a pinch 😊

No Chris, you’re not crazy. You have a healthy level of work ethic, skepticism, and humility that is very rate now. OTOH you have to deal with a lot of techs who are infected with “I don’t give a schittitis.” The worst though is the bean counter mentality, especially if they are actual bean counters. They pinch pennies but throw dollars out the window. Perfect example is my ex brother-in-law, a real life bean counter. He doesn’t see the point of car maintenance, yet complains that vehicles are made poorly because they seem to go to schitt after 3-5 years. Yet he won’t change the oil more than once every year or two. One time he ignored a ruptured CV boot and the eventual clank-clank-clank while turning sharp. He had his grandkids in that minivan when the driver side cv joint let go and tore things up so badly he lost control and ended up in the ditch

I deal with the same battle while on the roof and in kitchens. I protect myself having to spend time driving to return for something small I've noticed by just fixing it. Sometimes at a detriment to my time. I try to inform the customer and get an OK if it's something that will take an indefinite amount of time. Receiving payment for time worked is important but so is my sanity after driving all day 🙃

I’d love to put in an accumulator but there are more factors to consider, first the cost and mostly the lack of routine maintenance would likely cause the accumulator to have a plugged up pickup screen causing catastrophic compressor oil loss… of course we could try and prevent that by installing a suction line filter before the accumulator but that is just more money that the customer would have to approve….

@@HVACRVIDEOS A liquid line filter and a screen on the entry of the TXV is all you will ever need, unless it's a burnout, most probably caused by the driers left in the line after 24 hours. What I did was put in a tee and a shutoff so I could bypass the liquid line drier after a day or two. All driers restrict. Took me a couple more minutes and a couple extra fittings instead of having to burn it off and replace it. If you have metal flying around in the refrigerant stream, you have serious compressor problems! Notice the TXV screen. All you need to worry about is not plugging that up totally with scale or copper shavings.

7:06 Because you get them to have you fix it now, while you're still there (maybe you even have some time left available on the original work order so they won't be billed for additional labor, just a replacement part) than have it become an emergency later. Especially if that emergency winds up being a compressor burnout remediation and replacement-- while you're on overtime. Hopefully you can save overtime calls for when you have to fix the damage left by lightning strikes and tweakers-- so the customer has someone else to be angry with.

If it was me I'd rather you tell me you found this issue and you can fix it quickly and relatively inexpensively while you're there saving me a potential expensive OT call and maybe killing another compressor. That's how you earn and maintain loyal companies. As I've said before at least do basic PMs! I realize retail is different from a restaurant but once you've had to have a 20yd dumpster delivered after losing refrigeration for your entire sales floor you become religious about doing PMs. Sadly that wasn't the first time we'd had to call for a dumpster but it was the last. The "best" one was a contractor did something stupid (turned off the wrong breaker iirc) that took out a good chunk of our coolers/freezers including the backroom ones. Yeah that company got an expensive bill. Ironically I think it was someone from the power company that screwed up.
