Is the heat from the high pressure side of the system typically used to heat the store as well? I work in the meat cutting department at a supermarket and it’s very cold in our store. When I found out the condensers were outside the store (near receiving in our case), it made sense why the store was so cold. The way these systems are designed basically turns the entire store into a refrigerator.

@@ayeeniko If you mean other than the meat cutting area then the owners are probably being cheap about it if its like that during the winter time. But if you work in the meat department its always going to be cold in there.

Have worked on supermarket refrigeration most of my life. Retired now, don't miss the 2 am phone call because a store has a 9 watt motor out in a 12 foot dairy case! Or water dripping on the produce cooler floor at 1am when no one is even working in the department!

A helper in a NYC union starts about $18 per hour. This is if you are totally green. For the next 5 years, you get raises until you become a Journey Man. At that rate, you would make about $42.00 per hour in the union

I did hvac for 20 years and yes you are correct, it's 24 hour work. I shut down my company in 2020 due to Covid and I now tender to my real estate investments. Supermarkets are a pain in the ass and yes they will call you at any time of the day or night and when they do, they want you there immediately, like in 1 hour or less!! I learned quickly and really honed my skills working on those compressor racks but after a few years I stopped working for supermarkets, got tired of the unrealistic demands they put on you and the pay isn't great, most large supermarket owner (or company) are very cheap, they want million dollar service for pennies on the dollar and they are absolutely always on the hunt for someone to replace you who will work for cheaper than you.
