The Beatles - You Can't Do That (Live in Melbourne, Australia, 1964) [COLORIZED]

Here is a new version of my old colorization.
I matched the colors exactly to the new home footage that was found. I apologize for the extreme interlace but that was the highest quality footage I found.

Absolutely. I was a working musician for 25 years and I can’t imagine having no monitors, never mind the entire audience screaming at the top of their lungs. To pitch the vocals that well is truly incredible. John in this clip wouldn’t have been able to hear anything other than his own guitar and a bit of Ringo.

@@Tony-yp7ok So you're saying they couldn't hear the massive amps and speakers behind them?
@Tony-yp7ok

@@johnarnold893 They would hear their own amp behind them, but that just has guitar in it… that’s about all they’d hear. A cranked up AC30/AC100 is pretty deafening and John wouldn’t have been able to hear the other guys’ guitars very well as his own amp would be drowning them out. The vocal mics would be in the PA system. The PA speakers would have been positioned in front of them (to avoid feedback), pointing towards the audience. Trust me, in that situation you can’t hear yourself sing at all, which makes it very difficult to pitch well. The sound for performers on stage (even today) is completely different to what the audience hears.

Watch the solo. George’s picking isn’t in sync with the soundtrack, a sign that this may have post performance dubbing. I love this video. I thought the same thing about the screaming. All other videos showing live performance don’t measure up to this one. The comments from some about there not being a pa for vocals/ mix have never played live. 2 nd guessing 60 yrs after the fact.

@@GrumpyOldGit60 as I understand it they DID have some foldback for this show because it was being videotaped by Channel 9 (Melbourne). For my money this is the greatest ever live footage of the Beatles in their entire career. Epstein watched the playback in the GTV-9 OB van, loved it, and allowed them to use 18 minutes of the show instead of the previously agreed 12. Unfortunately the bit in the middle, which wouldn't be aired, was physically cut from the reel and destroyed. A lower quality audio recording existed however, and has been used in restoration projects.

@@johnappleby8195 You corrected the bloke who says it was Melbourne that provided the biggest crowd. A third of the population is crazy! Rather amazing that the band can play and sing pretty much in tune, on time, without floor monitors to be able to hear themselves, especially with a screaming crowd that is eons louder than presented on the video. I have, and one can barely hear themselves, and I could not hear from the front of house speakers facing the audience, I was behind them.
