Музыка

Following the results of the Sound Matters "Most Overrated Band" survey, I share my thoughts on the result and why The Beatles at number 1 upset a lot of people. Plus: why to be overrated, you first have to be HIGHLY rated.
Also in today's video is a neat tip for organizing your vinyl records. Plus I share a more unusual holiday season record I think you should check out.

Hi Mark, just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work providing entertainment this year. I watch all your videos and I’ve enjoyed this one too. On the Beatles, being from woollyback land, Wirral, I’m a bit Beatled out, however, I’m not denying their contribution to the music world. Loved seeing Dymo tape for the first time in 30 years 😂. And as for records, can’t be too trad at Christmas in my book. Listened to Bing on snowflake vinyl only this evening. Have a great Christmas and New Year with your family.

I need to start sorting out my collection too. My albums are sorted alphabetically but need to split out the Latin and Jazz into their own sections. My 12s are sorted by genre and my 7” collection is well, who knows lol. Thanks for all the videos this year and look forward to more in 24. All the very best!

Always interesting and a pleasure to watch mate. I have a relatively small collection (approaching 2000 records), compared with you guys!, but my priority this Christmas will be trying to get the remainder catalogued onto Discogs (have done about 700 so far). You’ve got to be in the right frame of mind to do it, and I find an hour or two is the limit before one’s brain fries!! Generally good fun though and very educational.

Nice! Getting 2000 into Discogs is no small task! Little and often, I suppose. Thanks for watching. Happy Discogs uploading and spinning over the Christmas period 🎶🎧🎄

Great to see my comment featured like that! Having a down time with vinyl right now. My integrated amp broke down and is in for repair and there's something wrong with the phono preamp in my backup. The volume in my left and right channels differs noticeably. I am tempted to buy a new amp as this repair is taking forever.

@@soundmatters Yamaha s801. Some distortion started up less than 10 months after buying new. In a Yamaha certified repair shop for over two months and has yet to be seen. The repairman was sick. Using a 1981 Yamaha integrated I have held onto. Works great except for the problem with the phono preamp. So in limbo.

@@lsaideOK How frustrating! If you're not just going to give up on the newer amp, you could just buy a cheap phono pre-amp (

@@PDXNTV the solution is even easier than that as I already have a phono preamp. I just need to get some RCAs. But I'm just so focused on looking at amplifiers to even do something so simple.

I grew up with The Beatles being played by older siblings-I remember one sister received Sgt. Pepper from a "cool aunt" for her birthday and my other sister being insanely jealous. I liked them then and have no problem with them now, but I really never need to listen to them again-there's so much else out there, plus they're just not my style. Thanks for the reminder about labeling divider cards. I bought a set of 1/4" stick-on letters to do just that and basically forgot about them. I've just started 11 days off from work, so that's a project I may finally tackle! I have tons of Christmas music. My favorite genres are lush, mid-tempo "department store" style (as streamed on SomaFM's Department Store Christmas channel) and loungey remixes of mid-century classics (as well as the originals). No Bing Crosby schmaltz or alt-rock/pop punk/whatever for me. Favorite albums are A Charlie Brown Christmas (which I think just finally started catching on in the UK) and the 1961 wintery (not specifically Christmas) album This Time of Year by June Christy (though it does feature one of my top Christmas songs, The Merriest). Love her voice!

Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your time off and the collection organizing. I keep meaning to listen to the Charlie Brown Christmas album, as your right, it hasn’t really been on my radar being in the U.K. I’ll check out those other suggestions too. 🎶🎧

I know it’s an opinion and everyone has one but The Beatles are far from overrated. I may get slated for this but if I was to choose a band/group that I think was overrated it would be Pink Floyd (my opinion). Love the videos and the community! I have learnt so much from you and everyone since I have started collecting. 👍

It's very true, it would be boring if everybody liked the same thing. Otherwise chances are you wouldn't be hearing something that's new to you that actually might help you develop more of an interest in at some point. Honestly, that's actually how a lot of these artists including the Beatles developed an interest in a lot of things you wouldn't normally hear in mainstream, whether it's folk like Dylan or Indian like Ravi Shankar, or even the healthy competition between the Beatles, the Stones, even the Beach Boys, as well as the Dave Clark Five believe it or not, ect. I'm currently playing the first Emerson Lake & Palmer album which introduced classical I'm sure to a lot of pop audiences. So regardless of whether you're a fan of various things or not, part of the interest in music is acknowledging who's influenced who and learning about musical roots that influence not only music has become but also who we are as individuals and certain freedoms we have now compared to the past. And there's no denying it, the Beatles are I'd say 95% responsible for all that, regardless of whether or not listeners are fans. Although with that said, I do agree the whole Beatlemania thing really was completely overblown and put them WAY up on a pedestal where no one honestly should have been. That wasn't a life to be had by those 4 guys and the pressure they went through proved it, especially John. Even that represented how big and disastrous fame and stardom can be which has been compared to others to this day. There's no escaping it. But all that is history and that will never be matched. So therefore, you can't truly overrate the Beatles!

I agree that The Beatles had an enormous impact on the culture of music and the industry in general. However, they are treated like they are the first band ever to write a melody. I find their music extremely boring aside from a few songs. Much more interesting music was already being recorded by people like the Everly Brothers and contemporaneously by The Beach Boys. I grew up around professional musicians in the early 70’s and though the musicians I knew felt that there was something to learn from the Beatles, they were underwhelmed by their overall talent. For those reasons, placing The Beatles on such a high pedestal clearly rates them as the most overrated band of all time.

This whole overrated band list is a massive failure. In every genre of music there are corny, uninspired, talentless people who are inexplicably popular. Every band on this list is an old, very popular and successful rock n roll act. This seems to indicate the ignorance of the vast majority of voters and the thoughtlessness of their submissions. Opinions on the internet blah blah

I'm 69 years old, I was obviously around with the Beatles came out, and I thought they were highly overrated back then and still today! All they were a teeny-bopper band!! Most guys I knew were like me, they didn't like them either, the girls loved them, but you're talking middle school and high school age, Evis was the same way. I was into Steppenwolf, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and the like, not that blah blah stuff that the Beatles put out. At the most there are 6 songs that the Beatles ever did I could stand listening to, the rest was just teeny-bopper stuff. Needless to say, I never bought a Beatles album or a 45. Obviously, just my opinion.
