Digitalizing is not something i would trust any software to automate. I rather keep control over my recordings and do every step manually while listening to the result along the way. This has worked for me the past 25 years and i’ve always been happy with the result. Adobe Audition has been my go to software ever since the beginning. And adding track names is a piece of cake with MP3tag.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't trust the automatically placed track markers. You absolutely have to adjust them yourself, but it takes a lot of the work out of the earlier process. Your Adobe Audition process interests me. I have a copy with my Creative Cloud package, but I never use it.

I have to agree. The automation seems silly. Here's the thing, you're doing a lot of waiting around waiting for the real-time recording on the computer to occur. I'm not suggesting that automation isn't helpful. But this video is missing the point of these kinds of software. The real benefit is the declicking which isn't even discussed in the video. Instead we're demonstrated a feature in the tracking splitting process that it turns out isn't even recommended. I've done this many time in Audacity and it's really easy. You don't split up track like you do in this program. Instead you just highlight the track and cut & paste into a new file. Why bother being all that precise. And honestly I really don't care about tagging the files. I use MP3Tag for this, and guess what it's free and it will go into Discogs and pull tracks the same way. What's nice is that you can do this outside of the recording program. This is nice because you're in a different program which can be run while you're recording another side. As I've stated, the real benefit is declicking. Don't buy any program to digitally record records for anything else. The free stuff works well enough for everything else.

I'm lucky to be a DJ with quality gear at home, so I use the Pioneer DJM-V10-LF mixer with Pioneer's USB connected DJM-Rec iPhone app which captures the audio at superb digital quality as a WAV file and allows it to be saved to any of the cloud systems for subsequent processing on a PC. What I love about the DJM-V10 as a mixer is it has built in compression on each channel, specifically built to "fatten" out the vinyl recording. Makes life so simple although I do have to use MP3Tag software to add metadata like album cover art, artist, album and track titles, year of release etc. and I also use Adobe Audition to remove clicks and crackles on older vinyl or bad new pressings.

@@soundmatters THe click removal and other options under the Effects/Noise Reduction menu do amazing work on old vinyl. Auditon can also use VST plugins so it#s great for LUFS metering (required for pushing recordings out through streaming) and other repair tools like Izotope's amazing RX software.

Hi and thanks for the video. I am looking at downloading some of my rare vinyl to digital format to add to my digital jukebox. I have a question about connecting the rega to the SSL2+. Are you using a RCA to balanced 1/4 cable or RCA to XLR? Also are you keeping each cable separate and using both XLR inputs on the SSL2+? I have never hooked these up before and I cannot find a good answer through my many internet searches. Thanks

Thanks again for a very informative video! I think I'll purchase an SSL2+, but I'm not an expert in using a laptop or computer. Does the manual of the SSL2+ explain how the device has to be connected?

Glad it helped. To a degree, yes, but it’s worth noting that if you’re connecting a phone preamp to the SSL, then you’ll need cables that are RCA to 1/4 inch jack. 👍 - hope that helps. You choose “line level” at the input by a switch.

Its very good. You can manually insert your own corrections as well. That takes some experience though looking for the exact spot. Have a really good method of cleaning the disc ahead of time helps the most though. Get rid of as much dust and grime as possible going in.

Just a heads up regarding sample rate. I've been sent quite a lot of transfers from wide-bandwidth MC, and to a lesser extent MM, setups over the last couple of years, and it appears that the practical bandwidth of the medium doesn't exceed more than 24kHz or so. In this light, using a sample rate of 48kHz is the best option, particularly as all that will be captured above this point will be ultrasonic distortion and noise, which can be quite intense in MC setups where the tracking bandwidth can exceed 40kHz... If you start reproducing ultrasonic content and distortion, it can upset electronics in the signal path. They may have missed a trick not calling it 'Vinyl Destination'.

Thanks Micheal. Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to this. It was your preamp (the MC Pro) that I used for this actually. I’m not as knowledgeable as you are in this area, but I’m assuming this relates to nyquist theorem. If the bandwidth doesn’t exceed beyond 24KHz then why capture it: I see your logic. I need to pick your brain on this….

Lossless compressed formats such as FLAC retain all the data in the same way you can zip a Word document and then unzip it and get the exact same file you compressed and not an abridged version of it.

And yet, no one - outside of Audiophiles - actually use FLAC files. I know that I don’t, for sure. I only just started using 320kbps MP3 files - only because I was to have already completed a recording for an online Radio Station, and they only use 320.

Does Vinyl Studio allow for normaizaition of the audio recording? Also is normalization this something that you reommend?

It does have basic normalization of bringing the volume up to 0db. But to make the music sound more "modern" I open the audio file in Reaper64 and use a "JS: Zero Crossing Maximizer". That brings up all the musical data in a more even way so that the volume is louder, but does not exceed the db limit or cause distortion/clipping. Some purists might not like that, but when I playback my vinyl recordings they sound similar to CD quality instead of a noticeable drop in volume like I was experiencing at first.

Whats different with the pro version than standard?

Have you tried Ocenaudio instead? It might be worth a go.

What we need is something to convert CD to vinyl, Edison cylinder would be better as no tracking error.

Really poor decision idea to use background music when explaining the editing process.... would have been far more useful to demonstrate what the effect of your editing was by actually playing back the track you were working on.

CD ripping programs do this for free. Just another money grab.
