Legend has it those roman heavy infantry are still marching forward.
I guess the Roman heavy infantry took the whole 'one job' thing a little too literally.
They did tell us we had one job though... -Roman heavy infantry, 218 B.C.E
"I don't know how to describe this, but they kept going, and going, and going, right of the edge of the map" this cracked me up. You've gained a subscriber.
Frankly, it's just hilarious that the Romans kept marching through and away from the battle. What the hell were they thinking?

Probably that they smashed the main force under Hannibal which meant the rest would run. Maybe they thought that was all the troops he had. Who knows.

+DukeOfWellington they could have been marching to where they thought the Carthaginian camp was. Or maybe their orders was marching into the enemy then keep going forward?

+Per Mortensen It's like some Monty Python skit. Orders are orders. They were told to march forward and they did the best forward march anyone could hope for.
5:46 Hannibal, the ultimate troll, simultaneously defeats the Romans and draws a smiley face to mark his victory. [:

Yeah me too.
In Dodge's book he says he sent the calvary over during breakfast time to interrupt their morning meal so they would fight with no food in their stomachs. Meanwhile Hannibal's forces were getting warm by the fire and eating while the goose chase was going on. Then forcing the Romans to wade through the freezing river upon reaching the other side many were shivering. Love these videos btw!
Actually, Hannibal purposely put the Gallic infantry in the center to make the Roman commander commit his best troops to fighting his inferior auxiliaries which were replaceable (and the Carthaginians suspected them of treachery), and since they were inferior troops, would allow his encirclement to commence, while psychologically giving the center of the Romans the "edge" by making them think that they were winning the battle. When the Gauls routed, the center pursued (perhaps so the Gauls wouldn't return to battle or because they believed the battle was won). In either case, I don't think you win every single battle over the course of 17 years, with only one exception, by chance and luck. It was a calculated move.
if only the romans had walkie talkies
This is a great example of how communication, or the lack of it, can be the defining factor of a battle
So... from the looks of things, Romans could've won the battle if the troops that decimated the gauls turned around, and struck the carthagenians in the rear. Hannibal was pretty lucky, thar.

The Romans in the centre kept going because they were persuing the routed Gauls. I don't think it was for no reason.

michaeldog123ful Well that they were boasting of the victory clearly shows that they thought the battle had been won. All they would have been able to tell from looking back was that the battle was still raging.

huntmaster89 yeah and because of that they should of flanked because of the raging battle. That takes common sense. These guys were just idiots

+huntmaster89 Yup. The narrator ignores that this exact same tactic was used at Cannae to annihilate the Romans. Hannibal absolutely knew the Gauls would break and that the Roman center would pursue.
I like how the carthaginians were arranged as a smiley face after they won. Coincidence? I think not.
After his 1500 mile journey from Cartagena, across the Pyrennees, the Rhone and the Alps, dodging Roman armies and fighting hostile tribes, he reached Italy losing 25% of his army and 32 out of his 37 elephants! One of the greatest of military feats, Like all greats, he had an outstanding team ....Gisgo and his own bros Mago and Hanno. His Numidian horsemen were led by the brilliant Maharbal, who had an outstanding role in all his victories. There was no way Hannibal could be beaten. Until he met the innovative Scipio, leading a superior army, with many more cavalry. at Zama in 202 BC
Guess this won't help my Total War game, unless the other guy has Serious microing issues. Also, this was hilarious - the heavy infantry "just kept going...right off the end of the map" Also Also, I discovered this channel 20 minutes ago and now have a new favorite subscription.

battles are my favorite topic
5:10 What... the... fuck? WHAT THE FUCK!? I love the romans... BUT COME ON!
The Roman's in the center probally thought since they broke the hard and tough gauls the rest would run. They couldn't have been chasing the routed Gauls because then they could get up behind Hannibal's forces.
This channel is very good quality, amazing that I found it by accident.
Yes a new battle video. Love these!!!
I remember reading somewhere(sorry no idea where it was) that the force that ran away wasn't just misscomunicated and without orders, but that they were led by the Tiberius Sempronius Longus and it was a deliberate break-through and escape from getting surrounded. Could you maybe add a bit on this? Besides that great video and nice graphics to further visualise what is being said.
Roman infantry using W + M1 tactics
Amazing as always! I really enjoy the war centred videos.
The Romans in the centre kept going because they were pursuing the routed Gauls, it wasn't for no reason.
great job with the videos! keep it up!
Amazing videos! Please keep it up!
Awesome video
thank for the video
Great work. Keep it up.
You should do a video about the Tribun of the Plebs video, as you did with the consuls and preators :)
The battle of waterloo next?
I know a lot of people died, but the stupidity of the romans in this battle is actually funny. Hell, even the AI in Total War is smarter than that.
Good work! keep it up man, i really enjoy roman history- There are 2 games in which you can play as them. Rome total war and rome 2 total war. In thr second game you play the second punic war, its amazing
why are there not more videos? i want more i stumbeld on this today
Are you able to make a video about Genghis Khan's tactics at some point, that'd be awesome
at 5:46 , i could see a smiley face !! , lol
Nice!
Never heard of that roman line keeping going on in that battle. Where is this mentionned?
When you go into a battle rage, you dont care about anything and just keep going, but I dont think a whole like of roman heavy infantry can go into rage

quick question, do you think the Gauls or even Carthaginian took the armour shields and swords from the dead Roman? because any time I see them in movies they are almost naked? or just poorly equipped?
I put it together and there is 1 final reason that Rome lost these battles and Hannibal easily predicted his moves... A very good network of spies.
Do The Battle of Zama!!!
Gauls are people too..
5:47 [:
I'd suggest that your videos in this list be reorganized to place them in a more sequential order. JMHO
what a fucking farce hahaahahah great video
wait? i thought that by the time of the second punic war rome alredy controled all of italy so how can rome then have italian allies?
@Jarvald
8 жыл бұрын
+Vilgot Ottestig They had influence over the whole peninsula. They didn't have formal annexation of everything though. In fact there was one city, can't remember which, that defected to Hannibal during the war.
@cameronnedland410

+Vilgot Ottestig It was a difference between Roman citizens and other Italians.
ROFL they probably thought well we did our job i bet our men will finish of the others lets go celebrate yolo
What was wrong with these Romans?!
im not completely sure on this, but wasn't rome intentionally leaving the battlefield,so that the troops of their allies would be slaughtered? after all at this point in time rome was still dependent on the loyalty of the italian allies,so robbing them of their military power, effectively robs them of their ability to revolt/switch sides. after all they didn't knew what kind of monster hannibal was, they just thought of it as good opportunity to render their allies helpless
