The Battle of Lepanto - October 7, 1571

Documentary video: the Battle of Lepanto; October 7, 1571 - a coalition Christian fleet faces the naval forces of the Ottoman Empire in one of the most important battles in history. Lepanto, where the crescent faced the cross, where the Ottoman Turks clashed with Latin Christendom. The famous author Cervantes, who was present at the battle, called it “the best day’s work in centuries.” Today, the Battle of Lepanto remains one of history’s most remembered, discussed, and studied events.

In the Philippines we celebrate dual feast of victories related to the Battle of Lepanto. The defeat of the Ottomans (Oct 7) and the defeat of the Protestant Dutch (Oct 4) in the Battle of Manila. We attributed it to the intercession of the Our Lady of Victories. Every October, the image of the Nuestra Señora de la Naval is carried and paraded throughout Quezon City, a neighboring city of Manila.

It is important to note that Philip II of Spain was a major player in this battle. He is almost never mentioned or properly acknowledged. The Battle of Lepanto was financed principally by Philip II. Philip was also king of Naples, Sicily and Sardinia. He supplied the majority of the vessels of the battle from the fleets of his kingdoms.

The Spanish Empire provided 41 galleys out of 209. But covered half of the total cost and provided roughly more than half of the soldiers, 8000 Spanish, 3000 Germans,4000 Italians. Venice provided 106 galleys and 6 galleasses and covered 25% of the expenses. Provided 6000 soldiers as well. The remaining italian powers , Genua , Tuscany, Savoy the Papal States plus Malta , provided around 60 galleys and less than 7000 soldiers. The Venetians suffered almost 4500 casualties, ,( including many free rowers ) the Spanish more than 2000, the other Italians plus Maltese sbove 800.

Agreed. Our countries deplore their own side in the Crusades, whilst those on the other side, in modern day Syria, Egypt, Turkey et cetera lionise and celebrate Saladin, Baybars, and their victories, and mourn their losses. Part of it is contempt for our religion Christianity, especially the Roman Catholic/Orthodox Catholic variety, part of it is contempt for everything mediaeval, and recently you can add fear of provoking Islamophobia.

The keys of success were the famous Spanish “Tercios” embarked and cleverly distributed among the different Christian formations and the on time sending by Don Álvaro de Bazán commanding the rearguard of ten Spanish galleys and a group of frigates and brigantines to the center of the deployment to support the success that the capture of the Ottoman flagship might entail. As a result of this reinforcement, the Ottoman center was totally undone.

When Cervantes was in the Battle of Lepanto he said: "Put me in the most dangerous position". So they put him in a small longboat that accompanied the galley of Don Juan. It was there where his hand was shattered. His fellow crew members gave him great praise for his bravery and treatment of his companions, which afterward so impressed Don Juan that he wrote for him a letter which was to be a pardon (for dueling within the Royal grounds) and which would allow him to return home after many years from self imposed exile. Unfortunately for Cervantes, he was captured by slave pirates on his way back to Spain. Most of the passengers on the ship he was on had to pay a small ransom to be let go, but Cervantes, because he had the letter from Don Juan on his person was thought to be worth much more. He could not pay it and spent many years in the prisons at Algiers. He escaped on his 4th attempt. Cervantes was an amazing figure.

"And the Pope has cast his arms abroad for agony and loss, And called the kings of Christendom for swords about the Cross..." Ever since I read G. K. Chesterton's poem in my Roman Catholic secondary school here in Southern Ireland, I have been intrigued by this epic battle, one which was, apparently, totally forgotten, in the British Isles at least, until Chesterton's poem revived its memory. Protestant Europe, and, subsequently, the Renaissance and then the Enlightenment wished to distance itself from the Crusades, from anything which smacked of the mediaeval-Roman/Orthodox Catholic mind. So much so in fact that Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire was promoted by the likes of Lord Byron not as lifting the yoke of Saladin from Greek Orthodox Catholics, but restoring the Greece of antiquity.

Thoughts on this subject,go back to QUB modern history department and some of the finest lectures delivered by the the then Dr Lynn Green. His lectures were part of the “Europe in transition”,course. Even though I remember drifting through some of his talks,he was an excellent historian with a passion for history, aswell as taking a great interest in education! He was very on top of this subject matter, and was well able to impress on us the great significance of this battle!

The Battle of Lepanto might be my favorite naval battle of all time. Such great things were accomplished, even the kings engaged in personal combat, including the enemy general. A desperate fight and a great victory for Christianity. The heroic conduct of the leaders always impresses me with pre-modern battles. You read about various Roman commanders that did similar things too; they would charge into combat at the very front of the line. Julius Caesar does it many times in his campaigns in Gaul and Spain and really all over Europe. You see it here in the Battle of Lepanto too. The most recent example I can think of is Napeleon doing it a couple times, and American civil war commanders also doing this sort of thing sometimes - and high level officers like Colonel's, like Custard, though that's a losing example. It's much easier to follow a commander that shares the same danger as you than someone sitting in an office 2,000 miles away or more and enjoying the luxuries of a lifestyle you can't even imagine. That's why the Generals of the past had extremely loyal followers. So do most actually brave Generals that fight alongside the troops. It has a positive morale effect on your own troops, and a negative one on the enemy if their commander isn't fighting too - and it's gonna make a target out of the general but that will concentrate fire(or swords) in one direction which can more easily be countered.

I would agree that troops tend to value their general serving under the same conditions as they are enduring, one thinks of General Rommel in North Africa in WW2. Whether that is advisable in general terms though, is extremely doubtful. The equivalent of the Kings and Princes of mediaeval days is not 'Generals', or other army officers. You would had to have had President Roosevelt seeing action in WW2 to duplicate King Henry V at Agincourt. Or have seen Queen Elizabeth 2 and PM Churchill fighting at the battle of the Normandy beaches. But even if you restrict it to high ranking officers, it is a bad idea to expose your greatest military minds to enemy fire. The UK was very fortunate that Admiral Nelson died during the Battle of Trafalgar and not beforehand from enemy fire. If the Allies could have taken out the top German generals in WW2 they would have certainly been delighted to have that opportunity. Leading from the front is a recipe for being leaderless.
