@@ReZel80657 Heck! I gained most of my programming skills from youtube rather than college. Learned English from cartoon network, Russian from shows like "Soldati" and Japanese from watching anime(can't read or write in Japanese though) rather than school. My 3rd grade English teacher was worse than me. Aside from Math(Albebra, Geometry), Chemistry and Physics, every single subject taught in school are just fillers which glances over things rather than discuss and reflect from them. IDK how stuff works in the west. But Asian schools are pretty much useless in the information era.

Jean de Vallete personally led his soldiers into combat wielding a sword and pistol along the walls. He was already an old man yet managed to reap his share of kills. Another commander who led his men into personal combat against the Turks was the last Roman Emperor at the siege of Constantinople.

@Demiclea Yeah, there is no need to be itchy for a defeat, they won a fucking lot of battles. We spanish aint itchy at all for loosing at rocroi. Well, a bit proud of killing nelson at trafalgar besides loosing that battle maybe.

The defenders of St. Elmo are undoubtedly some of the most epic badasses in history. They knew that they were going to die, but instead of letting that notion crush their hope, they let it give them the resolve and strength to fight to the last man. I can only hope that Sabaton makes a song about them someday because it would be fucking epic.

On 8 june, the knights of St. Elmo asked La Valette permission to make a sortie, to die with their swords in their hands. La Valette replied that, if they had to die it was better for them to die at their place, as he ordered them to. They mantained those places until 23 june.

Finally, thank you, Kings and Generals, I have been rooting for this for ages. As a Maltese this has been one of the pinnacles of our history, the Maltese have never been defeated neither by the Ottomans nor by the Axis forces in WW2. Coincidently both sieges ended on the same day the 8th September that is also the feast of our lady of victories, one of the dearest to the knights. Just some clarifications and fun facts, the Ottoman fleet did not berth in the Grand harbor as it would have been an easy target, it berthed in Marsaxlokk in the southern part of the island. St.Elmo resisted for a month, even though it was a hurridly ill built fort the defenders died defending the fort bought precious time not only for the relief force to arrive but also for the fortifications in Birgu and Senglea to be finished and bolstered. The relief force would have arrived earlier if it wasn't for the constant anxiety by the king of Spain to preserve his new fleet. Pialy Pasha was anxiously patrolling the sea all the time. Most of the Ottoman Corsair commanders were Renegade Christians. Many Ottoman soldiers perished due to dysentery from the marshy water in the ottoman camps and poisoned wells. Sources say that the decision to invade Malta was taken after Knight Romegas Captain of the Knights navy captured the Sultans Eunuch ship, it was present in the harbour during the siege as if to pull the Ottomans legs. La Vallette served as Captain before Romegas, and was the mastermind of many raids, he was also taken prisoner and rowed as a galley slave for 2 years until he was ransomed. When Birgu was about to fall La Vallette sallied to the front and joint the defence nearly risking his life. Following the siege donations poured in the knights coffers from all over Christendom, this made the knights very rich, with the money received preparations began to build a new fortified larger city on mount Sciberras, the city dreamt by La Vallette would be built, and would become known as Valletta, the present capital city of Malta, UNESCO world heritage site.

In order to create a proxy war far away from the Papal States! The reason : The sultan landed in the papal states a few months before! The knights of St. John were pirates. From Rhodes and Malta they attacked and looted more than just Muslim ships. That was why the ottomans removed them from Rhodes and tried to get them out of Malta.

@@cpmenninga well it was corsairing the actual word. And even the Ottomans had pirates... the Barbary states of North Africa. Two notable corsairs/pirates Barbarossa and Targut Reis also known as Dragut. They raided many christian lands like Gozo in 1551.

Fort St Elmo is now a war museum and they have a fascinating section about this battle. The fort also played a big part in the defence of Malta during the 2nd World War. Definitely worth a visit if you're ever in Malta

Dave Sisson “Nothing is so well known as this siege [the Great Siege of Malta] where Suleiman’s fortunes ran aground.” - Voltaire In WWII, the only people that could match or better the Maltese in 1565, were the Maltese, on whom were dropped more bombs per square foot than anywhere else in the war. I have never (unfortunately) been to visit that extraordinary island, but in my imagination the Maltese people are the toughest people in the world, lol.

The action of the Spanish troops, both companies of old soldiers, was vital to lengthen the siege in San Telmo, fighting to the last man as they had already done in Castelnuovo, and which made Turkish victories a priori cost a very high price. It is a victory for the Order of Saint John and La Valette was a commander worthy of mention, a great character, ready and well prepared for the position, but without Spanish support they would not have sustained themselves. Curious the less that Religion is led by a French, and the French King, a Catholic, has been a vital ally of the Turks, it is undoubtedly noticeable, as happened in Germany that in many cases religion was the excuse to knead power, as did the Protestants.

@Aleksa Petrovic As someone who played AoE1, aoe2, aom and aoe3, you need to know that AoE3 plays like an empty echo of aoe2. It has a similar structure but not its soul and was a disappointment for the series' fans. I liked aoe3 but I loved aoe2. I still play it today, 20 years after it came out. I don't think you should compare your aoe3 to a game you have never played before.

The difference is that I find both humorous, while you seem ironically quite "butthurt," to use your term. Who would win? 7000 professional German soldiers, or 100 angry half-dead Russian bois? Who would win? 4000 of the mightiest warriors in southern Africa, or 139 red bois? Who would win? A 40,000 ton battleship and the pride of the German navy, or some obsolete biplane bois? @DiscordChaos it is because they grow up isolated from world with ultra nationalist or religious emotions, i used to be one of them haha.

It should be noted that although the knights are represented as mounted troops in the animation, the only cavalry the knights had was based in Medina as cavalry would not be very effective in a siege. The rest of the knights would fight on foot. As far as interesting pieces of information go, in order to bloster the morale of the troops at St. Elmo and convince them to fight on, La Valette offered to have himself and the oldest knights swap places with the garrison. This had the desired effect of shaming the troops there into fighting on. Another detail which wasn't mentioned but was shown was that the line of ships behind the chain also served as a bridge between Birgu and Senglea, allowing the knights to run across it to reinforce either side if these were attacked. Though the knights would eventually accept Malta and Tripoli they weren't very keen on it as the island was arid and poor and the knights themselves were not in a very good state due to still having to recover from losing rhodes and being landless for a long period of time, making holding the two distant locations very difficult for them. While Gozo was mentioned as a seperate entity the island should be considered part of Malta being a very short distance away from the main island (roughly 7 km total distance) and having been administered alongside it. Malta being given to the knights was actually a breach of an old agreement the island had made with the Aragonese king Alfonso the 5th wherein after they had rebelled due to the harsh taxes imposed by one of the feudal lords in charge of the island (Gonzalvo Monroy) they had payed a sum of 30000 gold florins and were allowed self rule.

Also this is important, the animation showing the Ottomans landing at the Grand Harbour is completely wrong. The Ottomans landed at Marsaxlokk (the beach to the southeast of Malta) and disembarked there. The reason the admiral wanted to take St Elmo was so the fleet could be docked at Marsamxett because he was afraid (probably incorrectly) that a storm might wreck the fleet.

Malta, Lepanto and Vienna. Without those victories there would probably be a big mosque instead of the Saint Peter's Cathedral in Rome

Mike Ciopraga I know, unfortunately true. I hope there is a lot more available from archaeology but I know much less about that field, nor how hard it is for historians to turn it into narrative history.

*In Turkish, the name Dragut Reis is translated to Turgut Reis There's actually a city in Turkey that is named Turgutreis and ive visited their many times to see family when I was younger. Apparently, Turgut Reis himself was born there in 1485 when the place was still called Karatoprak (Dark Soil). There was (and still is) a huge monument commemorating Turgut Reis and his fellow soldiers during the Siege of Malta in the towns main park, and I remember climbing up on his statue with my cousins during the night when I was a kid. I like to think that me climbing on his statue rubbed off some curiosity for history on me which has stuck with me ever since :D Also, just wanted to say thank you for these great videos and for helping me with my channel. I still get tons of people saying they found my channel due to a comment that I posted and that got pinned by you guys from January of this year. Can't deny this battle was historically epic. Full of courage on both sides. People forget about the perspective of the individual soldier and civilians caught in up in it...

One of the most heroic last stand for the Hospitallers, from what I read this battle was brutal and savage. With bodies of enemy dead being taunted from both sides. Keep up the good work!

Ah, great stuff. I remember buying a monograph of this siege and reading it, only to discover that I was to be a guest in Malta shortly after! I went there and enjoy every second of it, looking at the actual places I had read just a few days before. Phenomenal siege, Valette was the personification of determination, a scary commander.

I absolutely LOVE these amazing siege videos. At first I wasn't as interested in Ottoman battles, instead I preferred Roman history. But thanks to your videos, I have found these videos to be so interesting. Keep it up!

What to say... İ am turkish, and i was wathing this like an movie i was waiting for almost 400 years... Almost falling of my couch from the tension 😅 Congrats to the people of malta. A battle is not a matter of numbers. But on bravery 💪

I read the book about this siege over 10 years ago in high school. I had to turn in the book and has since been out of print. Thank you for bringing me back to one of my favorites points of literature.

Hi, I’m Maltese so we learn a lot of this in school. Pretty good except for some minor inaccuracies. The ottomans first landed in a bay in the far south of the island away from the grand harbour because the harbour was well defended by Birgu, Senglea and fort st. Elmo. Once they captured fort st Elmo at the tip of what is now the Valletta peninsula, they moved their fleet to the Marsamxett harbour on the other side of Valletta from the grand harbour.

1923 is the year that Ottoman Empire was officialy disbanded and replaced by the Republic of Turkey - it was just the land of modern Turkey after WW1.

I'm impressed by how well the writers/narrator manages to mostly avoid showing bias. These issues are still emotionally fraught, to this day, but there are only a few moments where it seems like the chanel has picked a side. Very well done.

Spsnish once again fighting to the last man, like in Castelnuovo or prevesa, meanwhile French selling cannons to the turks and English pirates debilitating the alliance

The commander at the fort actually dressed the women and children in knight armour and garments and made them patrol the walls, thus looking like a fully garrisoned fort, which the ottomans could not afford to waste time taking.

Reminds of me the scene where KongMing/Zhuge Liang tricked Sima Yi in a bluff that there is an ambush, byt there was none lol.

watched this for the second time. I can highly recommend seeing the musea there if you ever happen to go to Malta. Very worthwhile!

Very different numbers of the defenders from what I've heard : Histocast, the best military history podcast in Spanish. They say around 8000 defenders. 700 knights, 3500 Italian & Spanish from the Tercios, and the rest Maltese militia

Everyone is weak until a Tercio shows up

What an unbelievable stand from the christians. This epic battle reminds me quite a lot from another that would take place later in the new world, at Cartagena de Indias, where the spanish Blas de Lezo commanded the defence and hold the city, defeating a much larger English force. Epic moments in history that would have significantly changed the world.

In the last ottomane assault, the situation was so dire that no man could be spare at the walls. Even the old but valliant french grand Master took up his double handed sword and slayed dozen of ottomans. After the siege, the pope rewarded him by proposing him to become a cardinal. But he refused, wanting to prepare malta for a 2nd siège that never came. For his devotion to the island and his heroic action. La Valette became the new name for the capital of malta

@@liubalthsar9820 two more things : La Valette was one of the few survivors of the siege of Rhode. And two, the maltese people had also heroic moments. The Knights made a sea barrier between the two penisula blocking the ottoman ships from entering the citadels by see. The ottoman sent swiming soldiers cut the ropes and chains with knifes and axes. Malteses people meet them in the see, ferocious combats took place among the waves...

Thanks for covering the siege in detail. I am a Maltese person who lives in the fortified city of Senglea and didn't know many of the details presented in this video! A few years ago I read in a book that when St Elmo's wall were turned into rubble, all available men were called to defend the breaches. Those who could walk and fight were given swords and those who could not walk due to injuries or sickness were placed in chairs and given long spears. In one attack, the local commander was killed and a brave unknown(I think) knight took command and helped repel the attack, however his command only lasted a few minutes, as he was hit with a cannonball. Thought I'd share

Roger Crowley's "Empires of Sea" - great book on the conflict...In "Patton" (1970), the character also commented on this great battle... Hernan Cortes- from the Conquest of Mexico? -he was there too. Crowley's other books are great too. Best defense of an untenable situation in world history

Thanks for this video. Unfortunately there are a number of mistakes. The fleet did not land in the grandharbour, it is not even 7 miles deep. They passed the mouth of the harbour and landed further south in Marsaxlokk, a less protective harbour. This is crucial in understanding why St Elmo was attacked before the rest of the emplacements, since its place at the mouth of the two harbours would not allow the Ottoman fleet to anchor in the Marsamuxetto harbour. Furthermore the request of the knights at St Elmo was not to leave St Elmo for St Angelo, but to sally out and attack the Ottomans on Sciberras, but De Vallette knew that holding out would result in a prolonged engagement on Sciberras rather than an open battle that would last a few hours at best. When the cavalry in Mdina attacked, the Ottomans had breached Senglea (St Michael) not Birgu. When Birgu was about to fall, the Grand Master himself fought into the breech and rallied his men around him. As for the 'Piccolo Soccorso', no mention of the small help that landed on the north of the island and managed to get through the Ottoman lines to Birgu. The attack on Mdina was simply a response to a much bigger landing force that landed in early September and camped there, where an open battle took place with the Ottomans retreating as far as the sea and swimming to their galleys. The massacre took place some 23km from the Grand Harbour.

Also the civilains that are evacuated for Mdina are shown to just move to some place very near Birgu when in fact Mdina is quite inland and far from the forts. And I noticed Santa Margarita is shown as in place of Corradino Hill in reality. Margarita is in fact the hill thats close to the entrance of the great harbour in Kalkara.

Yeah the inaccuracies in this one are pretty brutal…kind of lazy tbh. Not like there’s any lack of good sources.

Hernan Cortes was present during the Algier's siege, but his lower extraction prevented him from having any major responsibilities.

You're skipping the siege of Rhodes in 1480 when around 3,000 Hospitallers were sieged by more than 70,000 Ottomans yet managed to pull out a victory.

Suleimans army got its ass kicked in his last battle he died before the defenders lol.

One thing that is not mentioned here is that Spain was the only country that sent soldiers to help the Knights of the Order of Malta, in addition to the 600 Spanish tercios that already existed. This relief was what discouraged the Ottomans from continuing. besieging the city.

There was one English knight, Sir Oliver Starkey, Valette’s secretary.

Watching this from St Elmo is incredible. The place where the war is fought can be seen from a very good viewpoint.
