Vinnie Colaiuta di play (more or less) a couple reggaes with Sting but I think you meant Stewart Copeland with The Police when reggae rhythms were played often.
@musamusashi
2 жыл бұрын
Nor Vinnie nor Stewart play Reggae riddims, but most play Reggae inspired grooves. Vinnie does it often, not only with Sting but in many other tracks from Steely Dan to Djiavan to Jeff Beck... in fact, he has some of the best Reggae feels outside of Jamaica, although he plays more complex parts than you would do on authentic Reggae.
Foreign territory for me. Thanks so much for explaining so well!

@@Luiz.Campos No one is born with rhythm, it's a learned skill. Familiarity through cultural exposure can make this easier, but it's not innate.
When ever I play raggae: I always loosen the snare some and take off any ring damping on the snare head. And of course practice your rim shots. So important to the sound. Also the ruff is a great rudiment in this style, ending with a rim shot. Great flavor. In the Caribbean ( I lived and played there for about 10 yrs), another part of this style of music is improvised instruments like a car tire rim hit with a metal object. And other such improvised things. Great stuff, wonderful musicians and music.

I've got a playlist on KZread called "Collie Reggae". It has a lot of modern reggae mixed with old school, dub, roots, all types and some funk mixed in for fun. Maybe some things in there you've not heard yet. Shrug. The most crucial element you missed and I'm sort of joking but sort of serious is you weren't letting a fat spliff burn in your mouth as you played 🤪. Ganja is as much a part of reggae as anything...all players, especially roots guys, smoking a spliff while playing isn't just some stoner musicians getting lit, it's religious music and ganja is the sacrament, not a cultural identity or a life style. A sacrament. I would say it's vital to playing good reggae drums. Great playing as always...love the concert Tom kit...I'm glad to see those kits are having a bit of a come back...I think they sound incredible!! Mad skills man...much love and thanks for making this video. Learned A LOT!!!
Manh this is what I've been looking for, how on earth could i not subricrbe to this😊😍thanks man, now waiting for the reggae rolls
snare sounds awesome great video thank you for doing this
Hi Chris I'm a Reggae Drummer/Teacher in Jamaica. One of my students sent this to me laughing because I had been beating all of them over the head about learning to play it properly. In Jamaica there is the idea that once you were born and grew up here it automatically makes you a Reggae drummer; this is NOT TRUE, and it can be easily proven; it took me 20 years to learn it. Funny I just dreamed about being in Germany two nights ago, I have played there a few times. Please think about these things. Do you know why it is called "One Drop"? Do you know what 'Rockers' is? Let me help you because even authentic Reggae drummers do not know. It is not because the 'drop' falls on beat 3, because it DOES NOT. I love Vinnie Colaiuta and met him when he came here (Jamaica) many years ago, but he is not a recommendation for learning Reggae. He blew my mind when I first heard him in1985 (I think) on that Joe's Garage album. That's all I listened to for my whole tour. I watched a small portion of your part 2. Your part 2 is a rhythmic contradiction to part one. Do you know why? Hint: the drum set does not establish/determine the time signature of a piece of music. Every song has it's time signature drums or no drums. A drummer should be able to play both One Drop and (Straight 4-Steppers) within one piece without changing the count, because it is not about One Drop or Straight 4 but about the time signature of the song, the movement of the chords and melody. Why is none of you paying attention to that? By the way not all Reggae is in common time. For your theory to work you would have to count two different ways to put One Drop and Steppers in one song, totally unnecessary and incorrect. Please do not teach that any more; there are many young talented Jamaican drummers watching you guys teach who will not take a drum lesson because they think that they know it already. You are making my work hard to do. Lastly, the name Rockers was used in Jamaica long before Straight 8 (Straight 4) was recorded. The name Rockers is just another name for Reggae, it is NOT a drum pattern. Blessings.

This is great! I've been playing these grooves for years and didn't know what they were called. Any one of them, if you increase playback to 1.25 times normal speed, sounds like stuff I stole from Stewart Copeland (which, of course, he stole from the music he heard growing up). Thanks for helping to fill in the holes of my drum education.
