Mona Tavakoli - Cajon As A Drumset

Mona Tavakoli has played with Jason Mraz and Raining Jane. In this lesson she breaks down some basic drum set patterns on the cajon and takes the cajon further than what is expected.

I began playing Cajón in Perú in 1974. I believe the "Cricket", as it is called in this video, was one of the first things I learned to do as a 7 year old. The Cajón is not a replacement for a drum set, although there is certainly some overlap. To approach this instrument in this manner is much like approaching the guitar as a bass guitar. I can certainly see some applications for this specially when performing solos during a show, but not to constantly replace the drum set. It would simply overlook the importance of the Cajón as a unique instrument and its idiophonic qualities. One would also miss out on the Cajón's fundamental purpose, to be used as a syncopation rhythm compliment to other instruments in the band.

With my respect, humility is always a good thing. What you call "cricket" is a very old trick that we use in Spain and quite sure in Peru too, long before you played a cajon for the first time. As I believe, you are living in L.A. so you probably know Diego Alvarez "El Negro". He know very well the tradition and all about old school and modern cajon. A little more respect for the Maestros. Best Regards

@@THX-vp9fz you're right that to give her a benefit of the doubt, perhaps she didn't know that it is a very old technique.... in which case, she is naive AND presumptioius that anyone as young and seemingly inexperienced as that could actually "invent" something.....a better wording that could have used would have been that she "discovered" or "realized that there is this cool technique."......HOWEVER, That aside, I don't understand your reason for assuming that Juan Carlos Melian is giving her a "Macho attitude". AND even if he were, perhaps to suggest that he change that notion is more effective.....Additionally, if anything her assumption that "she" invented that technique is what White people have done repeatedly in the West.... take something that BIPOC have done for a long, LONG time and then say "I discovered this" and "I claim ownership over this idea"...

William Angliss - I agree with you this is a cool video AND that she definitely DID NOT invent that....and in fact it is quite a statement of some sort of privilege for her to put out that SHE could have invented it.....it's what White musicians and artists have been doing for centuries....saying "I created that!" when they are copying or mimicking what is already here.....and she seems to be a fairly advanced cajon player and you would think that she has heard a great number of good cajon performers who hadn't seen her perform and are doing that technique..... so it doesn't make sense that she is claiming. It is a very odd position. Hopefully, she'll listen to the comments here and below indicating surprise at her assertion and realize her mistake. And I can only hope that it was a misstatement.
