If you’re looking to get into reggae drumming, look no further than Gil Sharone, the author of the award winning DVD and book on Jamaican Ska, Rocksteady & Reggae drumming entitled Wicked Beats. He has played and/or collaborated with reggae legends Eek-A-Mouse and Lee Scratch Perry, Grammy Award-winning Morgan Heritage, Fishbone, Slightly Stoopid, HR from Bad Brains, Dave Wakeling of the English Beat, and Western Standard Time Ska Orchestra.
In this video, Gil gives you 13 essential hi-hat patterns to get comfortable with. He plays them all over a simple one drop groove but you should also try these variations over a steppers and a rockers beat.
You’ll see how changing just the hi-hat pattern can completely shift how the beat feels.
Don’t forget to play these variations over one drop, steppers, and rockers beats.
This video is one of eight parts of Gil Sharone’s course “Exploring Reggae Grooves”. If you enjoyed this clip, check out the full course on Drumeo Edge!

Well ....what can I say about bears and beats..... Lol
I've looked at lots of Reggae drumming lessons and this is by far the clearest and most comprehensive one I've found - well done Gil and thanks so much man - one love!

The absolute best reggae drum lesson I have ever had. I practice to this all the time. GIL IS THE MAN!
Always enjoy some Gil drumming. I appreciate how humble his playing can be considering the amount of shred he has.
This is extraordinarily useful to me, -a lifetime "by ear" listener and George Stone struggler. Aping drum licks goes only so far. As I push 70 I keep learning more and more due the the internet and great videos like this. THANK you for helping me keep my 25 year old rocker self intact. ~Tom Upton
This tutorial smashes all others out of the water. I'm not a drummer, but in my efforts to produce my own song it is highly informative and it helped me move along in my song development. Thanks brotha your tutorial made a difference!
Number thirteen rolls along like a train and never gets old
Excellent teacher! 🔥 I'm just learning Reggae drumming and this will help tremendously....Thanks 😊
Very very good lesson... being a reggae lover this helps me a lot as a beginner
Great tutorial for the younger generation to understand and appreciate.
This video really help me to play reggae beat.. thanks dude.. from malaysia
7:04. Thank you so much for explaining the One Drop, Steppers and Rockers. This sounds silly but I have always had a problem with the one drop but this has been extremely helpful! 👍 🤘

Not silly at all. I can't discern the kick sometimes when you have a top bass player working circles around the beat.
Great Video! I was informed AND entertained. Nicely done.

Great reggae hi hat sounds, Thank you bro
Good starting point into reggae drumming...basics first. Never found a such good vid about this.
Thanx man , that was the best lesson on reggae drumming specially the way you explained how the hi hat’s variation works with z one drop , rockers and steppers 🤙🏾
all that you need about reggae with Gil Sarone! Thanks!
Really enjoy these beats! Unity rocker!
The notation on the screen is really helpful for guys like me trying to put these into a drum machine. Thanks dude!
Thank you so much! Drumeo I needed to know the right hand technique for Hi hats and know I'm ready to use👍
Great Video! I'm not a drummer, but I like to make reggae music. This helps me understand hi hat patterns A LOT better. Thank you for this.
Steel Pulse was in my head the entire time
Very clear and efficient explanations, I knew already all these patterns but without knowing how to write and practice them separately which is at some points essential. Repetition of all these patterns is the key !! So thank you very much !! ooh by the way great sound of the drum on the record ! If I can add an advice to anyone who wants to learn more about the feeling of playing reggae on the drums more than the technic, just listen to jamaican reggae music and especially to the drummers, and their pattern on the hi-hat. They know how to groove it. Love Reggae Music
Brilliant lesson. Great teacher. Thanks.
This is an awesome video! Thank you very much, this is everything I need to become better at drumming reggae.
Great lesson. Well structured. Perfect demonstrated. Nice play along.
I loved it Thanks. Could feel the vibe
Reggae is just so chill and cool... i like the quick transition to the next groove w/o much explanation for one groove heheh😊😊 Keep 'em variety of drumming styles coming, Drumeo!👏👏👏
great drumming. i admit i always overplay this genre. thanks for the simplicity
This channel is amaizing 🥰
Reggae is a blessing to be poured out on all flesh
My daughter and I had a session on my kit the other night, she plays piano and guitar but has hardly ever played drums....I was astounded by how good she was just by playing other instruments. Not exactly reggae but I put on Green Onions, I said to her "It's quite slow, has no real fills but play it and keep in the pocket". Good vid mate.
I just discovered this! Thank you! Excellent instruction and easily understood!
Fantastic vid! Thank you for posting!
Beautiful that last one I've been wanting to learn forever
What a cool feeling in me to see, you guys, get Gil for reggae drumclasses!!

@@spankthadrumz I never said otherwise. They've just had a million different members, which I hate. It's hard to call it a band when theres a different lineup every album.
This is cool because I'm learning how to read drum music too.
Fantastic, man
Awesome info!
Nice drum set love ❤️
13 was the best, jah! Also good to slightly open the hat on the first triplet.
