Coach Brian is more karate than he knows. These drills form the basis of many Okinawan karate drills also. Especially when he shows the solo representation of the drill, that’s how kata are born. Thank you for the tips, good stuff here.

Coach Brian as always you know and show good technique. When you saw those two pummeling in a loose and lackadaisical manner-You coached them to tighten up their drill motions. Years ago I was watching a freestyle match with an American and a Russian. They were on their feet, while pummeling. The Russian wrestler knew what he was doing. The American wrestler began a lazy, loose pummel. Just seconds after they began pummeling, Russian wrestler raised his underhook elbow wide and to the side. When American wrestler began to reach high over the top to get his underhook (that never happened), the Russian wrestler ducked under his opponent’s high reaching arm and shot a head outside single leg takedown. That leg was left completely open because our American wrestler was reaching too high and wide, when Russian wrestler adjusted his elbow a bit higher and to the side. Our wrestler was in the zone. His mind had switched to pummeling drills done sloppily and when already tired. Drill when not too tired, and drill similar to match conditions. After wrestlers learn the drill, occasionally they can score some points, especially when drill partner is getting too sloppy. Maybe one time during drill each wrestler should take advantage of partner’s poor form-half speed. I know coaches don’t like to see wrestlers live wrestling during drills. During a five minute pummeling drill, maybe each wrestler should score against their partner’s sloppy form-half speed-not full power, and immediately resume the drill! I dunno, maybe it will give good results-or maybe not. Especially since most coaches don’t allow drills to get off track. Wisdom of the herd, means I could easily be wrong-thinking outside the box! Thank you Coach Brian, you are the man!

I just started BJJ and needed a little reminder of this. Going to keep in mind to stay square rather than lead foot forward.

    我们这里把这个动作叫做:插捧。手插进去,把对方捧起来。有些不太一样的发力方式,插进对方的腋下后,手要朝上方用力勾起,多次动作中消耗对手体力,找机会破坏对手的重心稳定。

Thanks Coach. This drill is awesome. Pummelling is such an important skill. How can it be adapted for Female students so the chest contact doesn't become too painful after multiple reps?
