Read our full tutorial here:
- Step 1: Raise the bar up onto your back, taking either a high or low position, depending on your height/torso length.
- Step 2: Set your feet just past shoulder-width apart and your hands in either a wider grip (if your shoulder mobility is poor) or a narrow grip (if your shoulder mobility is good) on the bar.
- Step 3: Breathing in, hinge at your pelvis, and push your butt back like you are sitting in a chair. Keep your back neutral, with just a slight lean forward.
- Step 4: At the lowest point, your feet should be flat on the ground, your knees behind your toes, your upper legs should be parallel to the floor, your back should be straight (not curved like a turtle shell), and your head should be upright.
- Step 5: Pause at the low point, then breathe out as you fire back up to the start point, making sure not to lock your knees out at the top.

    I've recently been getting into squats more and have been looking for good exercises. The barbell back squat looks great, really like the variance of the high/low squats too. Appreciate you showing the proper form as you can really injure yourself with squats if you don't do them right. Thanks as always.

    Personally, i never worked out with barbells because i do find them a bit dangerous. What if the barbell falls. I guess doing the barbells squats, and the fear of the barbell falling makes one to push themselves to the max basically. Seeing you do them in a safe matter made me think about doing the barbell back squat form in my next gym session.

    Hi Doc, finally a good explanation about how to do a squat. Tnx. I got a question though... i have a lower back problem for more than 25 years so how do I determine what weight to use. i allready bought a belt to support my back, but even now after doing squats it don't feel right... Tnx. Rob (the Netherlands)

    Hey Rob, thanks for writing in and great question. First of all, if you are experiencing any type of pain, we don't recommend performing this movement. However, if you feel it may be a correctable movement issue, rather than a structural issue, ensuring your core is activated is a great place to start. When you flex your abs, you naturally straighten your back to allow it to handle heavier loads. Determining a weight to use will take some time and experience but always err on the side of lighter until you feel you have mastered the movement. But as I said, do not continue the movement if you feel any pain and look for a viable alternative instead. You can find some great lower-body movements from our leg exercise playlist here==> kzread.info/dash/bejne/ap5-0MVvmM3anqQ.html -The FFP Team

    I am not fully squatting when lowering the bar. Does this mean I have to lower the weight and get down to the seated position to have the correct form and it will be more beneficial. Cheers

    Does the length of the weight bar matter? Their are different length weight bars any hints??

  • @Fitfatherproject

    @Fitfatherproject

    3 жыл бұрын

    Ney Nelson, thanks for writing in and great question! The exact length doesn't matter as much, though you may find more of a need to stabilize your core for balance with the larger, Olympic size bars. But as long as you are using adequate resistance with your squats, it doesn't matter at the end of the day. -The FFP Team
