The abs have four main muscles: the rectus abdominis, the obliques (internal and external), and the transverse abdominis. Many people make the mistake of only training one or two of these while building ab muscles. A great ab workout works all four. Building lower ab muscles are just as important as building upper ab muscles. Building a strong core for beginners can be easy if you start incorporating these 5 ab exercises into your workout.
Train your abs like you would any other muscle group. Hit it hard with a full muscle workout one day, then give your abs time to rest and recover. Many people try to do one exercise like crunches every day, but this is not the most effective way to train your abs.
Ab workout for men over 40:
(3:58) Ab wheel rollout (2 x 8-12 Reps)
(5:38) Hanging leg raise (2 x 8-12 Reps)
(6:57) Pallof press (3 x 5 Reps)
(9:10) RKC plank (2 sets with 45-60 seconds of rest)
(11:03) BONUS: Chin-ups (to failure)
This is a great ab workout for dads and men over 40, whether you are a beginner or advanced.
* Pro Tip: Add this ab workout onto your normal workout routine 2 times per week.*

    Great video. It was wonderful you started with a clear, simple anatomy so you can understand you workout. That makes a huge difference. I am curious if the oblique workout would/should be avoided for people with spondylolisthesis. Usually any "grinding" motion is to be avoided but if you do a light weight and the action is really pushing forward not twisting, it should be good. It's similar to what was recommended from the PT staff.

    I do L-sits, leg raises on the dip bar and used to do side planks, one leg/arm planks etc... but nothing hits my obliques like the exercise you showed in the video. I just tried it out and this is *by far* the best oblique exercise I've done so far! I will also get myself an ab wheel soon. I like about the ab wheel that you can see your progress when you build your way up so there is more to aim for than just an increase of reps. I think it will be lots of fun 👍💪

  • @NickIrvine
    @NickIrvine2 жыл бұрын

    Question: In one of the first videos I saw of yours, you say that men over 40 (I am 43 and enjoying your videos) should ditch the "splits" and go for the full body workout. In a few of the subsequent videos I have watched, you talk about splits. Example - Talking about taking this on to the end of whatever split you are doing. I am wondering if I should stick to the full body, which I am enjoying more than when I was doing splits, or should I think about splits again? Thanks so much for everything you have shared! Edit: I now see that this video is a couple years old, so maybe things have changed?

    Hey Nick, thanks for writing in and apologies with the confusion! We do still recommend for guys to start with a full-body routine for sure. Only after enough experience has been accumulated we recommend exploring the possibility of doing split-body routines. In our Old School Muscle program, we have members starting with full-body, advancing to upper/lower splits in OSM2, and eventually push/pull/legs in OSM3. Hi. I am 35 years old from the Philippines. I have a history of multiple slipped discs and although I don’t experience lower back pain anymore I am still worried that if I do exercises to build muscles, I may feel the pain again. What muscle building exercise can I do without aggravating pain in my lower back?

    Hi Adriane! Welcome to the Fit Father Project Brotherhood! Every person's body is different. Consult with your Doctor before starting any exercises and if something causes you pain - do not continue doing the exercise. If it does not cause you pain we would recommend deadlifts to grow your lower back muscle/strength: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qIZ_ptitZpyboMo.html -The FFP Training Staff

    Hi Nilesh, you need to hold your core strong to protect your back, start with just a couple of reps, as you get stronger you can increment one rep at the time 👍

    Hey Wally, thanks for writing in brother and kudos to you for finding a way to get/stay healthy, despite your physical ailments. If you check out the video below, it is a fantastic workout that can be modified to adapt around your shoulders. Consider swapping out the shoulder press for deadlifts, and push-ups to curls. If you need a tutorial on those movements, check out our KZread channel as Dr. A has them for both. kzread.info/dash/bejne/n22klMmNcZfUcrw.html -The FFP Team
