Time, time, time
See what's become of me
While I looked around for my possibilities
I was so hard to please
Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

@@WithaJoeFro That's because you do not know the backstory to what was going on in the band and what eventually led to them breaking up. Susanna Hoffs was being "groomed" by producers as the lead, the face of the band (which, I might rightly point out, was a good decision, she is by far the most charismatic, as most will agree) - but the other band members could not accept that and that led to fracturing, posturing, and the whole "only me" syndrome that eventually broke the band up.

For people who don't know it because they're too young, RD Jr. was an addict and practically killed himself because of that. Look at where he is now. I just wanted to mention it because if you're an addict, don't give up. He was in such bad shape and he fought his way back. If you're despondent, just remember you can fight addiction. Susanna was so respectful and humble about doing the cover and meeting Paul Simon after it did so well on the charts. On the Bangles website, she talks about meeting Paul Simon after watching Simon & Garfunkel in concert: "We had loved Simon & Garfunkel, and naturally we also loved Paul as a solo artist, and we were really happy to see them perform and then go backstage for a meet-and-greet. This was after our version of 'Hazy Shade of Winter' had come out, and although I don't think we talked about it very much, I remember he was very sweet, and I'm sure he was happy the song had done so well. I think it's always good to have your song covered, but it was a little uncomfortable talking to him about it, because when Simon & Garfunkel did the song, it had gone to #17 (sic), and the Bangles version went to #2. You're proud, of course, but you never want to come off as full of yourself or arrogant you know?"

This is a fine cover of Simon & Garfunkel's version! I've always liked Vicki Peterson's guitar part here...it really rocks! And nicest of all, it's clearly a band effort. In those days, the media was seemingly determined to put Susannah Hoffs out in front of the band, and it led to some tension in the group, although Susannah herself wasn't any more comfortable with the way the media presented them than the rest of the Bangles were. So hearing them playing this as a band is a real treat! It shows that all four of them together were more than the sum of their parts!

And Vicki really does have a soulful voice. Suzanna's is soft but very good, but Vicki can belt it out. She's good. And your assessment to my memory is spot on!

  • @Ambaryerno

I mean, I can't entirely fault the media. Of the four, I think Hoffs had the best voice (@MightyWomanOfGod talks about Vicki, but Hoffs can seriously belt it out, too. See Eternal Flame) and probably the most marketable look. I see why that fed into the tensions that caused the band to split, but it's also understandable why the media and label focused on Hoffs in the first place.
