The Back of the Mind Issue - Inside Out 2 Theory | The Fangirl

Фильм және анимация

Disney Pixar's Inside Out 2 is really well done overall, but the memory sphere's collecting in the back of Riley's mind wasn't addressed to my satisfaction! Uploaded June 26 at 2:40PM

I think this quote from Turning Red sums up this movie perfectly: people have all kinds of sides to them and some sides are messy but the point isn’t to push the bad stuff away it’s to make room for it and live with it

I mean yeah, Joy is seeing herself as THE best emotion. That was the lession she had to learn in the first movie with Sadness and she had to learn here that she can't frame Riley's sense of self all alone. (Just like Anxiety did) But I think that trial and error of Joy does so much of the storytelling with all the metaphors and the journey the viewers go on with her

I feel like we just needed a line that the reason anxiety is so much more powerful for Riley than her parents is because of joys actions. So anxiety is essentially working double time to make up for joys repression

Exactly! Just a line or two in the movie and maybe an ounce of accountability for Joy would have solved everything.

It's a mirror to the first film. In the moment it DOES seem like a good idea. These are unpleasant memories that don't seem to help so why not just put them away for now. But Joy herself realizes this is doing the exact same thing Anxiety is doing : choosing what Riley gets to be. It's why after going on that adventure and plugging in the old sense of self, Joy rips it out to let Riley form her own.

I think inside out has a constant issue of toxic possitivity by framing "negative emotions" like fear joy anger and anxiety as antagonists with joy being the only one who is "a protagonist"

Joy is the protagonist, but they didn’t paint the negative emotions as antagonists necessarily. In fact, in the first movie Joy is both the protagonist and antagonist. She’s the main character, but in the first movie she is also causing all the problems. Not intentionally of course. The end of the 1st movie and the whole second movie does a really good job showing all emotions have a job that serves a purpose

@tmm4195 fear disgust sadness and anger are not negative emotions the only negative emotion is hate. It depends on how you use them. Fear helps deter us from danger Sadness helps us cope with situations Disgust helps us away from poisons And anger helps us express displeasure in situations But painting only joy in a positive light only gives off a problem in the series to be toxic positivity

The first film didn't exactly frame the other emotions as negative. Joy described each of them, except for Sadness, as having a practical application to Riley's well-being, but ultimately in service in keeping Riley happy because she's still a child. Sadness is the only one where Joy couldn't see as useful, mainly because she was Joy's natural opposite. Though, I think the second probably could have focused more on Joy taking more of a backseat in favor of the other emotions, and trying to figure out what would be the right moment for Riley to experience happiness.

Because Joy is a selfish emotion. You can put a smile on other people’ faces, but you do it firstly because you want to feel good about yourself. Although “selfishness” is not necessarily a bad thing. It depends on the context. Do you know who else thought they were “a good person”? Emperor Belos, to the point of deluding himself that he’s the hero of his own fantasy, just because said narrative doesn’t match with his heinous actions such as fraticide, genocide attempts, and crimes against his own kind

Joy was always toxic, objectively in the wrong during the first movie via suppressing sadness, she just evolved into a new type of toxicity after she realized she needed sadness to occur. Can't wait for inside out 3 where Joy tries to become a dictator and specifically control every action of the other emotions, while Pride comes in after winning an important hockey game; who wants Joy's role as dictator for itself and there's a civil war in Riley's mind and all the worker blobs start forming troops to try to subdue the emotions and we meet the employer of all these blobs: Subconscious.

I don't think you can really call Joy a "villian". The emotions are a visualization of what's going on inside Riley's head, so things pointed to that make Joy a villian are really just Riley's character flaws and society as the villian. I think when her mom says "you've stayed our happy girl" that represents the true villian of Inside Out: society pushing false positivity and surpressing emotions (in some cases, joy included. If you're an adult and what brings you true joy isn't money, a large stadium event, or shall we say R rated adult time you get shunned by society-totally not letting my queer and neurodiverse van lifer roller coaster nerd that likes ghosts and abandoned places say that). Society is the villian of Inside Out, much like how it could be defined as a real world villian. Not any of the emotions.

tbh my biggest problem with "back of the mind" was it made the world building so clunky when paired with the first film. what's the difference between "back of the mind", "The Vault" and "long-term memory" (which we spent so much time in in the first movie)? Do the writers even know?

  • @TheFangirlWatches

    @TheFangirlWatches

    13 күн бұрын

Maybe it's just my own neurotic brain, but that all made sense to me. Long term memory would be where you store things that you basically remember forever (or at least a really long time) and the point of the back of the mind is that Riley CAN'T recall those memories and will eventually forget about them, thusly forgetting whatever she did wrong or felt shame over. So the back of the mind are memories that will never be processed or become part of Riley's sense of self.

I feel like the second film could have focused more on Joy trying to take more of a backseat. As Riley gets older, she becomes more frustrated with the changes in her life, prompting a greater need for the other emotions. So, when her puberty starts to affect the console, it ends up enhancing the other emotions but barely works for Joy.

I was watching a video about the cat, and I came up with this theory, enjoy. What if the cat is a puppet? Before Coraline goes through the door the first time, it acts weird, but maybe its just a weird cat. But it doesn't "help" her until she goes through the door. The Beldam obviously know how to make real eyes. The Beldam would have used real eye on it to make Coraline think she had someone to trust and answer her questions. Coraline would never know the difference, because she couldn't talk to the cat before, therefore she could easily be deceived by the cat. If the beldam used Wybie, it wouldn't have worked, as Coraline would know something is off with him.

The completely honest answer is that I don't know if I'm completely done with Coraline. I have talked about this movie for dozens of videos and I keep getting "more Coraline" comments, while simultaneously seeing a hit in views when I don't post Coraline stuff for awhile. All I can say is that I would LIKE to be finished with Coraline after so many videos, and that I have no idea what else I could possibly do with the film at this stage.
