Uh, Bert is literally the one who gets Mr. Banks to understand at the end? By acting like he was on mr. Bank's side and using reverse psychology to make him see how ridiculous he was. "Tricked you into taking your kids on an outing? Shameful!" Bert is important, not shoehorned! Mary cant be too whimsical because if she acknowledged her magic she woukd be burned as a witch but Bert is needed to draw positive attention to her magic. Without bert, mary would seem cold and offputting much of the time. Bert is the example for the audience of how they ought to view her.

That's what I thought, but without the metanarrative angle. My theory was that they are a team of child/family protecting spirits. Mary is a travelling, specifically-child protecting spirit. Bert is a localized, family protecting one. With a smidge of whatever those spirits that test generosity/hospitality are, hence the odd jobs for change. Who senses her arrival? Bert. Who's uncle has a, not at all normal, disease that makes people levitate when they laugh? Bert. When does Mary do her strongest magic, the chalk drawing world? When she is with Bert, it is his drawing she does it too, and they are together the entire time she does it. Narratively speaking, Mary does the least. Mr. Banks was going to hire an abusive nanny to watch his children. Mary steps in to prevent the children from being harmed and the family being broken, so Mr. Banks can focus on his issues. She maintains the status quo. And as you mention, it's Bert that makes him realize he had to be tricked into interacting with his own children. In the firing scene, Mr. Banks realizes that his bosses are not his friends, that his being exploited translates to neglecting his children, that he is stealing from his son for them, and making his son feel like the bad guy for it. And they discard him for their mistake. At the end, his bosses welcome him back, but he has learned his lesson. He will no longer set himself on fire and neglect his children to keep his bosses warm. Would the abusive nanny he planned to hire have prompted this change of heart? Probably not, because what does he need her for if he can take care of them himself? And if he loses his job, being a frivolous goof, her income would be affected. In the book, Mr. Banks had been abused and trained to believe that was the way to raise children. The conflict there being that Mr. Banks needs to see the error of what was done to him and that it would be wrong to continue it. In a way, she saves him too, perhaps as apology for not doing so as a child.

I always thought she was a witch from Hogwarts. The bag acts like Hermione's bag in Deathly Hallows. She has powers and abilities that act more magical than anything. The way she cleaned up the kids room "with their help" is similar to the way that Dumbledore uses magic to clean the house that Slugghorn was staying at. With her normal dark blue coat, I wouldn't put it past her to be in Ravenclaw as well.

Another point could be why she did look slightly different in Mary Poppins Returns is she regenerated but made herself look as close as possible (In the classic series The Masters various regenerations all looked very similar) Yes that means she “died” at some point but it may be 20 ish years for The Banks siblings but from her POV 1000 years could have passed and she regenerated as she was “Wearing A Bit Thin”

I love this idea, I'm kind of surprised I never thought that, but when Bert talks about how what's about to happen to the Banks family has all happened before it's very wistful, which is probably cause of the theory that you said! I do sort of have a more positive view of Bert's life, I feel like Mary teaches the people that charity and living your best life with those you care about is more important than living a life of lavish houses and fancy clothes. I think Bert is probably well off enough to have necessities and living conditions but unlike Mr. & Mrs. Banks at the beginning of the film he doesn't prioritize living up to high society pressures and keeping up with the neighbors in terms of having the nicest luxury items.

(Edit) I know the actors name but for some reason when I put it my comment gets deleted I wonder if its because it has 2 possible censored words in it?)

I always thought the chimney sweeps had some magic just like Mary Poppins does. And if you know about the original books of Mary Poppins this makes sense because in the books, the children know about magic and adults tend to forget about it. Back then, shocker, chimney sweeps were children. They were the only ones small enough to fit inside the chimneys. But yeah Mary Poppins does a number on this family, she gets the dad to quit his job in order to become a full-time stay-at-home dad. Yikes.

I've always thought that Burt was the nephew of Mr. Dawes Sr. He even says that cages come in all sizes including bank sized. Which would explain why Mr. Dawes Sr is also played by Dick Van Dyke. Just to spitball here, but Mary is a modern (well, Edwardian) fairy. The prim and proper air, incidental vanity, but encouraging enjoyment of life seems quite Fae to me, and between the whole Uncle Albert scene (the tea party on the ceiling), and being able to take a trip into a chalk drawing that all seem like the sort of whimsical magic a Fae would happily throw about. The idea that she comes into people's lives and inadvertently influences them into destroying their lives seems rather Fae as well. A fairy, in the old pre-Victorian British tradition would be self-important, vain, interested only in whimsy and fun, coming and going at will with no care of the long-term consequences of their actions. With this in mind, Mary seems like she does want to do genuine good for people - she is trying to improve the lives of the Banks family - but her natural lack of care for what happens once she is gone will cause impacts that will last their whole lives.

I enjoyed your theory as a huge fan of Mary Poppins! No, I had not heard anyone theorize that Mary was Bert’s nanny, but that is extremely plausible, well done. I am going to keep my book knowledge to a minimum since that drives you nuts on this channel. I have read the entire series. Allow me just to say that movie Mary is watered down extremely much to the author’s disgust. Mary is originally more stern, mysterious, mythological and intimidating than you see on screen. Though I grew up loving the movie the book version is epic. Side note: I started nannying at 18, I am now 41. Mary’s attitude may seem off putting to you but is not uncommon. I treat every child lovingly, with kindness and respect. But I know my place, these are not my children, not my family. It is an occupation and one needs to be able to have an internal level of detachment because this line of work is brief. I have personally seen caregivers who do not have that ability and it is a bad deal for their mental and emotional health and well-being and can be creepy to the family. Love your work Fangirl!

I'm so glad to get a nanny's perspective! I've known a handful over the years, but they never did it long term, so you're like the cool insider who knows this secret world! And it's neat to hear that the iconic Mary Poppins doesn't match her book counterpart, although, that's not super surprising since Disney loved to buy titles and then do whatever he thought was fun or whimsical with the movie adaptation. I still remember reading The Jungle Book in middle school and thinking "what the heck is this? None of this is in the movie!" Mary Poppins would be an interesting franchise to revamp for a Disney+ series!

You mentioned Bert being shoehorned, but he initiates the happy holiday, he leads the magic chimney sweepers, he leads them to the laughing uncle, Bert moves the story along at every main sequence (minus tuppins/room cleaning), and he is the one who explains to Mr Banks that he needs to change. If anything Bert has far more agency, screen time, and memorable moments than the titular character. But it's dick van dyke, he's a national treasure, no one in film history could have done this role where it's still relevant 70 years later. Of course Andrews is a competent & charmimg Mary, but is still hemmed in by gender roles of film at the time. Bert is her right hand man-child, having no constraints, but he can also make her do what HE wants with his smile. Anyway I think the movie is about Bert, he does have the most screen time. The rest of what you said was fine but I would emphatically argue he was anything but shoehorned. Source: been rewatching it with my daughter.

Also I feel that to some degree Mary's words that she does not love the children she looks after are her ideal due to her immortality rather than what she actually feels as during the movie she shows attachment in actions rather than words many times towards both the children and Bert and she is often shown during the movie to be lying either to the children or to other characters about what she feels or does. While I do feel that she left too early but that was likely more a narrative choice on the part of the film makers

I do like the question you bring up of why is Mary Poppins there? What is her actual in the game? I heard a theory once about her being related to the character in IT. Especially when you picked up a house you might be more sinister then she lets on. But her and the character in IT both hibernate for a while. But the other theorizer mentioned it could be a lot like the movie Monsters Inc. Where the character in IT gets its food and energy off of the kids fear, in Mary Poppins she gets hers from their joys. With that concept she's not there for the kids, but for her. And although for the most part I think that theory is on to something, the only thing that throws me off is the fact in IT "he" actually eats people, where Mary Poppins she does not. But it would account that if they are both different entities, that they would not necessarily have feelings. Anyways, something for you to ponder or look more into, I'd be interested to see what you think. If it's similar to this theory or something completely different.

I think I've seen that video floating around but I haven't watched it. It would definitely be interesting, albeit more terrifying, if Mary were an alien spider eating children every 20-something years. I know I did one that the Beldam and Pennywise could be the same race before, but I never really soaking in that idea for Mary. Oh my... what if those fun, magical adventures are just Mary's lure to get the kids close enough to consume. 😱

Fun fact: This Movie is based on a book series from the 1930s (look up Mary Poppins book series on Wikipedia) Btw Could you do a marvel character rights discussion I figured out that the rights for the marvel characters are owned by four different companies Disney:owns 90% (back in 2019 it used to be 70% and Disney bought News Corp. which owned 20% and it’s now 90%) Sony: owns 8% Hasbro:owns 1% (A.k.a. Rom and micronauts) Comcast(The company that owns universal):owns 1% (hulk and namor ya know all of the hulk and namor characters)

Those books are actually linked in the description. The Saving Mr. Banks movie is a really good watch too! And those figures are interesting, I'm surprised Disney doesn't own more, honestly, but I'm not sure what I could do with that as a video. I did a prediction video a few years ago about X-Men being worked into Phase 4 of Marvel movies, but no one really watched it. Maybe a few years ago I could have used it to explain why Spider-Man will never be in the Avengers, but the studios worked that one out already, lol.

The Fangirl Well the rights for the marvel characters are owned by four different Companies but I Think the rights for the marvel characters will be under one company again I think Hasbro should just sell the rights for the marvel characters they own back to marvel (aka rom and micronauts) and Disney should buy Sony and then Comcast should buy Disney and BAM! All of the rights for the Marvel characters will be under one Company again and I imagine a possible timeline 2022: hasbro sells the rights for the marvel characters they own back to marvel (aka rom and micronauts) 2026: Disney buys Sony 2029: Comcast buys Disney Td;lr within 9 years all of the rights for the Marvel characters would be under one company again

Jane is a train wreck too for that era. As an adult she's very free spirited and not concerned with her future, which, is a pretty big issue with a well-to-do lady in her late-30s to early 40s like she is in the sequel movie. Even as a modern adult who doesn't need a man (which, according to the film, yes she does after all), she's still flighty and not at all financially secure.

I always liked the mother's fake performative feminism. While that CAN be a harmful trope, it fits well with the whole family and point of the film. She is the kind of person that the real Suffragettes would have tollerated because she gives them the money they need to fund their efforts that actually make a difference even though she personally is annoying, ineffective, and doesn't actually care all that much.

It's such a weird double edged sword too. It's like, sometimes I end up covering the same topic, but I arrive to a different conclusion, and that ticks people off more than if I just came up with an identical theory as someone else. That happened with Kovu's dad in Lion King 2, and so many people jumped up with "Wotso video covered this already!!!" Umm, okay, and now I'm covering it with my own thoughts, so what? But then, when the Incredibles 2 released, I did 2 theories in the same week - the one that I thought was leaps and bounds better, and that was completely original, got very little attention, meanwhile the one on Jack Jack's powers exploded. And I was just staring at my stats like, "but a million people are rehashing this same basic video to cover his powers, WATCH THE GOOD ONE!!!!" Video making is a wild gig, I tell ya!

It depends a lot on the bank. Some still let you earn interest, some have a minimum balance requirement to earn interest, or they have a cap on how much you're able to earn in a year. I heavily avoid any bank that charges me for the privilege for walking in the door (also doctors that charge new patient fees), but they do exist. Unfortunately, a lot more of the economy is being structured to make rich companies/men richer and not leave much for anything else. It's not impossible to get ahead, but it sure is a lot harder in 2020 than it was in 1920.
