He had attached with the idea of not being attached. He could have enjoyed poetry and calligraphy without attachment. I think his attachment to the idea of non-attachment closed the door to blessing and further enjoyment in life. It seems like he was always with his attachment, even though he called it “non-attachment.

can attachment and non-attachment be the same? Does it really just depend on the perspective, or are those fundamentally opposed notions? like every opposites they determine each other... the one is only recognizable due to the observation of the other. is all non-attachment attachment? is also the reverse true? This is more a Daoist thinking on this Zen idea, isnt it?

Rather than share my thoughts, I will share of my experience with you. While listening to this story, you chose to share with us, a seagull with only one leg, landed in the middle of the beach a few meters in front of me. The sun was setting and every few seconds, the seagull's leg would dip, but never did the bird fall or seem worried. In a joyful state of calm, I felt tears well in my eyes and looking to the sky thought, 'what strength this bird has.' Thank you for being a part of this moment. Bless you.

Thank you for this beautiful story. Through the years I have come to understand detachment as the greatest way to love. You can fully embrace someone, some thing, a moment or an era of your life, caring deeply about them all, and at the same time learn that everything changes, and that letting go of the past is the only way to honor the present, to love those who are here and now. So the great act would be to smoke the pipe, learn I-Ching and write poetry to it’s fullest, and at the same time be completely open to the flow of life and them changing with it.

  • @christyme6395

    @christyme6395

I agree. I think the idea is to enjoy the moment while realizing it will change. Nothing is truly ours, not even the things we "own." One day the car you have right now will be wrecked, traded in or simply stop running. The home you live in may be flooded or burned down or you may simply have to move out of it for one reason or another. Your phone will become outdated, your TV will burn out etc. The people you love will eventually die or move on. The trick is to be happy with these things and these people anyway, knowing that everything changes and one day they will be gone.

@@purnimasrivastava2823 another trick is to understand that problem only ends in a man's life when he's dead. The only attachment is to understand that the only way to true happiness is doing the right thing. It brings inner and greater victory both physically even when problem would still come one day but realizing that we are just image and mere flesh, when problem comes you quickly want to solve it no matter what it may be but you feel deep down to give it a try even when physically it seems there is no solution but even the slightest effort of trying shows the bravery and greatest strength of who you truly are in any situation at a giving time. This image in fleshy form will be gone one day, we just have to live the best of our lives and that is knowing and doing the right thing irrespective of any situation you find yourself. It's the greatest strength of all.

Non-Attachment doesn't mean to give up everything that you're experiencing To give up everything that life has to offer This is the path that the Buddha took before where he failed to achieve Enlightenment, he gave up everything that came to life even things that He needed like food and water. Giving up on everything in life is called Aversion. The Buddhism teaches to be away from Aversion and also from Desire. To be able to enjoy, but accept when everything passes. To be in the middle of the pain and not rejecting the pain. Namaste.

When you are attached to something, you carry it with you on your life journey. It can be heavy and weigh you down, like an anchor. If you let go of your attachment, you are able to move more freely through life. Live life to the fullest in the place that you are. Then let go and move on, because it's hard to travel, if you are dragging the hotel with you.

If I might offer my reaction and reflection on this lovely piece. Initially, I started to chastise myself,, looking at all my attachments...upon brief reflection, I knew that I would be forever grateful that I am not and would never be an abbot. I am old, poor, and addicted country carpentry, the hour or two a day I spend sharpening my tools...my meditation (and I sit); and each day I better under my tools, see and feel a respect for the life of the tree, and feel a quiet joy - oft expressed with laughter and dance if there is music (there is always music) in my little open shop. people stop by, smile, children ask about old tools and wood, every dog in the neighborhood has been by to have their ears scratched (more than twice). I wake each day and as my feet touch the ground I know that it is a good day to die, each day all my work will be thew best I am able, I strive to learn from every mistake to become a true master carpenter...no matter how many times I make them. I will never in this world understand all there is to know about wood, I will never become a master carpenter. even now, at age 74 there is so much I have to learn, so far to go...and I go and on a good day I have a handful of splinters, fingers blackened from steel dust gained in sharpening, aching shoulders and back, and there is the laughter, and fairy tales, and poems. Upon deeper reflection - I endeavor to live and show love and for me to learn to be more loving. Its good to be a peasant.

No one's right nor is anyone wrong.. It is society that has taught us to be judgemental. Had we been in our primitive state... would we know the difference between right and wrong? We would live freely doing whatever took our fancy... Love the life you've lived and live... Much love and respects from Sri Lanka..😇🙏

Yet also to use discernment & be unattached to stuff & able to let go of what & who holds you back for your highest good. My grandson taught me a way to let go. Whenever something broke or disappeared he would happily burst out saying "Gone Now" it made me smile & feel it as yes it's gone now🤗 nothing more nothing less. The art of letting go with detachment.🙏😇 Thankyou for your lessons wise one.

Buddha's teaching to Bahiya: ""Then, Bāhiya, you should train yourself thus: In reference to the seen, there will be only the seen. In reference to the heard, only the heard. In reference to the sensed, only the sensed. In reference to the cognized, only the cognized. That is how you should train yourself. When for you there will be only the seen in reference to the seen, only the heard in reference to the heard, only the sensed in reference to the sensed, only the cognized in reference to the cognized, then, Bāhiya, there is no you in connection with that. When there is no you in connection with that, there is no you there. When there is no you there, you are neither here nor yonder nor between the two. This, just this, is the end of stress."(translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu © 1994)

Thank you so much for this. Just happened to be in need of this advice. At the end of life one will see that the life has been spent on some sort of attachments. So it won't really matter which attachments. Just don't go breaking hearts. 🙏🏼

It seems to me that the best way to experience Life is to go all in on a Adventure but always be ready to have closure when time comes. For me this kind of mentality makes me pay attention to the moment having to know that this too will come to pass 🙂🙏

So was his actual goal of practicing non attachment all done for his ultimate attachment? I don't think we can get away from attachment but I think certain attachments can distract us from our primary "purpose/attachment/goal". We, of course, can judge his life and find it lacking or full but that is based on our life perspectives. . Either way he is a good example of clarity and maintaining integrity, of his chosen life purpose.

Extremely powerfull! This definitely hit home for me. I think to attach our selves fully and let go gracefully is a good way to live. It's hard to do, but I think simply striving for it is enough. Thanks for your amazing videos and powerfully good energy you radiate into the universe.

Ironically one can be attached to the concept of not being attached to anything. As you said, middle way works just fine, just letting life flow but not giving up on it.

He is one directed, this is the path to enlightenment. "Either you can choose one over everything or everything over one" but you can't choose both. Attachment and Non-attachment aren't separate words. "You have to choose one way at a time."

Many people live life blindly believing that financial wealth is the most important thing, now I myself am guilty of this way of thinking too a lot of the time... But learning different people's way of life and the joy that they find from different things helps me see more and more that money isn't everything.

I hate to admit it but I was once heavily addicted to opiates. I wasted 4 years of my life on them. It drained me of my money and both my physical and mental health. At one point I was so depressed and addicted I gave up fighting it all together, I thought I'd soon od and die. I managed to pull through and finally beating it was the happiest moment of my life. It was unpleasant at the time but now I'm almost grateful for the experience, It revitalized my love for life like never before. I considered it a sort of ego death and it opened my eyes to how other things manipulate me similarly from food to women and everything else. For me the middle road is the way, to be able to feel and experience the joys in life without any particular attachment to any of it. Love your channel and stories they're very uplifting and thought provoking, thank you brother. Stay blessed

Detachment from the outcome is Zen. Longing for warm clothes and nutritional food will barely lead to enlightenment. Enjoyment of the moment with full attachment and attention is life.

I agree find the middle way, I do enjoy my creative projects what I like is hand sewing, crochet well anything that has repetitive motion because feels like meditation and in state of flow. You can still enjoy things better if they are handmade as will appreciate more. Media constantly bombard the mind with stuff we don't need, do you really need latest Iphone or console. Mindfulness is still key important attribute, life is there to be enjoyed. There's a saying collect experiences not things.
