THE ART OF WUMEI 伍枚 (Part I) - Master Yap Boh Heong | Season 3 EP 6
Ойын-сауық
In this episode, I visit Master Yap Boh Heong and Sifu Ben Shue in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to discuss the rare and unknown Kung-fu style of the legendary Kung-fu empress Wumei (Ng Mui in Cantonese.)
According to oral history, legend has it that Wumei took refuge in the Southern Shaolin temple, where she later founded several styles of Kung-fu. It was there that she met 'Yim Wing Chun,' a young lady who was threatened by a local bandit attempting to force her into marriage. She was saved by Wumei, who distilled her profound knowledge of Shaolin Kung-fu into a system that Yim Wing Chun could learn quickly and use to fight off the bandit. The martial art Yim Wing Chun learned was given the name Wing Chun.

it is dying not because of technology but because they don't train you how to fight for real after downgraded to McDojo level. You could put a rascal with brawling & street fighting experience to attack the 2 masters in this video. Things aren't peaceful in the country this vid taken. People that really concern about their safety opted for self defense joined muay thai, kickboxing or mma instead.

@ as long as Kungfu practitioners follow the corrupted teaching by corrupted McDojo Masters, kungfu is left dead anyway. Taichi got beaten left and right every month in China losing to kickboxing, muay thai, mma yet these losers didn't bother to check what went wrong, train physical, strength, accuracy & full contact sparring with open hand gloves. Not boxing gloves used in Sanda that is killing kungfu hand techniques amd sanda stupid rules eliminating floor fighting is also killing kungfu low level & floor fighting.
Great job Kieren! 👍 Fascinating contrast to the harder Fujian styles I’ve recently experienced. Looking forward to learning more!

Thank you. I can understand your comment regarding the harder styles and the expression of the arts in Fujian. I'm quite certain that there would have been "softer styles practiced there at one point before the cultural revolution. I'm looking forward to seeing your videos from your latest visit to Fujian. As Master Yap mentioned during the interview, the art of Wumei seems to be completely lost now in China. As there are currently less than 10 people in the world actively practicing this particular lineage of Wumei, it's fair to say that the knowledge and skills you see demonstrated in this video are extremely rare.

I heard Ng Mui was the monk who taught Um Young Chun (Wing chun in Cantonese), the starter of Wing chun kung fu itself. When you see the video, there are pretty many ideas sharing with Wing chun system. Defending and stroking with same time, angle and spiral physics, defending of center line...etc. It was amazing video for a guy learning wing chun like me. Thank you martial man!

Very interesting. So much of the traditional Chinese arts are surrounded by legend. It’s refreshing to hear from some one that was closer to the original source teachings.
Holy shit I think I finally understand what he's saying.. he's syncing his energy/movement to his opponents energy/movement at the exact precise moment of impact. He's in sync with his opponents movement yet slightly redirecting it at the same time
@Marriedasone

Pretty good. He's sending his energy to his opponents 'center' of mass. That then controls his opponents structure like a door knob and door
Imagine a woman in the Ming dynasty developing a crazy art like that. It takes years for us to learn it when someone who knows it all teaches us. She had to develop it for extraneous sources. Actually, in a way she had a cool goal because she was probably using it because she had to fight for her life. Those times were amazing. Tough people came from it.

She probably learnt and adapted it. That'd not be "woman"........ but "princess" going by these accounts. Which makes probability of having learnt it from young, higher. Only with elite background, will you more likely learn internal methods, due to both wealth, and higher learning threshold. She apparently dumbed syllabus down for "wingchun", so activists could gain some ability(viable threat) within shorter learning cycle.
Thanks Kieren, Master Yap and Sifu Ben, this is a great video in looking in to Wumei's Kong fu. It's a great way to see the connections with other related arts from her like all White Crane and Wing Chun systems. Also it takes out the misconception of all her arts are internal than just external.

Thanks a lot for making this remarkable videos in English. So how do you find this form of Ng Mui/Wumei as compared to Wing Chun, do they share similarities or differ in a lot of ways?
Very good Video. They speak good englisch and are clearly able to tell what they doing. Still when you havent felt the yi thing it looks like "magic". I am doing Liuhebafa and yi is very important in our line. So i am able to relate. Its all about what you can sense and how you use your body in relation with your Mind or yi. Always fascinating to see this from other styles so thank you Kieren
I think that was a really good one that you put up I like it that particular art picking up on your sensitivities uses it against you but he explained it better you know he's hacking your system it's pretty good not only did they explain it but you see this in a lot of other martial arts you know where they looking at movement that way through your body what do you move left to right at your shoulder visually there's your sensitivities you can pick up with the eye this actually picks it up just in the movement of your arm you can't hide it cuz the intentions of what you're going to do next comes out in that and he feels that sensitivity
Great interview. Thank you so much for the effort you are putting in this work.

I would love to see all 5 empty hand forms so we can make comparisons between it and other styles that it seems to have had an influence on. Im willing to have a reasonable dialogue with anyone but ive been around martial artists long enough that whilst some are easily led, others are arrogant. Im sure ive been both at varying times but ive also come full circle to realize that, for example, some arts have a value beyond what is initially understood at first glance. I posted in good faith in the first instance and neither invited nor wrote anything controversial enough to warrant someone threatening to “retire my (predeceased) sifu.” I wish you well on your path.

There's a sort-of answer at 19:33 . "It's very hard to defend against this because you don't feel where the power is coming from". So while it's possible to apply grappling and locking on a user of this skill, keep in mind that the latter is just as likely to have also seized you through that open hand contact, except you don't sense it. This skill is called Najin in TaiJi. Check out The Martial Man's interviews with Adam Mizner to see extensive demonstrations of it. :)
