THE ART OF WUMEI 伍枚 (Part I) - Master Yap Boh Heong | Season 3 EP 6

Ойын-сауық

In this episode, I visit Master Yap Boh Heong and Sifu Ben Shue in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to discuss the rare and unknown Kung-fu style of the legendary Kung-fu empress Wumei (Ng Mui in Cantonese.)
According to oral history, legend has it that Wumei took refuge in the Southern Shaolin temple, where she later founded several styles of Kung-fu. It was there that she met 'Yim Wing Chun,' a young lady who was threatened by a local bandit attempting to force her into marriage. She was saved by Wumei, who distilled her profound knowledge of Shaolin Kung-fu into a system that Yim Wing Chun could learn quickly and use to fight off the bandit. The martial art Yim Wing Chun learned was given the name Wing Chun.

it is dying not because of technology but because they don't train you how to fight for real after downgraded to McDojo level. You could put a rascal with brawling & street fighting experience to attack the 2 masters in this video. Things aren't peaceful in the country this vid taken. People that really concern about their safety opted for self defense joined muay thai, kickboxing or mma instead.

@ as long as Kungfu practitioners follow the corrupted teaching by corrupted McDojo Masters, kungfu is left dead anyway. Taichi got beaten left and right every month in China losing to kickboxing, muay thai, mma yet these losers didn't bother to check what went wrong, train physical, strength, accuracy & full contact sparring with open hand gloves. Not boxing gloves used in Sanda that is killing kungfu hand techniques amd sanda stupid rules eliminating floor fighting is also killing kungfu low level & floor fighting.

Thank you. I can understand your comment regarding the harder styles and the expression of the arts in Fujian. I'm quite certain that there would have been "softer styles practiced there at one point before the cultural revolution. I'm looking forward to seeing your videos from your latest visit to Fujian. As Master Yap mentioned during the interview, the art of Wumei seems to be completely lost now in China. As there are currently less than 10 people in the world actively practicing this particular lineage of Wumei, it's fair to say that the knowledge and skills you see demonstrated in this video are extremely rare.

Imagine a woman in the Ming dynasty developing a crazy art like that. It takes years for us to learn it when someone who knows it all teaches us. She had to develop it for extraneous sources. Actually, in a way she had a cool goal because she was probably using it because she had to fight for her life. Those times were amazing. Tough people came from it.

She probably learnt and adapted it. That'd not be "woman"........ but "princess" going by these accounts. Which makes probability of having learnt it from young, higher. Only with elite background, will you more likely learn internal methods, due to both wealth, and higher learning threshold. She apparently dumbed syllabus down for "wingchun", so activists could gain some ability(viable threat) within shorter learning cycle.

Brian Nastalim unfortunately I have never visited Indonesia so I couldn’t say. I do plan to visit and conduct some research there sometime next year so I will hopefully be able to advise further once I gain some knowledge of what arts and masters are there.

Even if there aren't any battle ready kung fu masters in the world today... The wisdom of the chinese is what inspired and influenced martial arts around the world .. It all started in China. There is something to learn from these people even if you aren't into traditional martial arts.. These teachings are both antiquated and futuristic.. Almost as if it was meant to be utilized either in the past or the future, but not now

I can see the similarities between the Killing Palm Form of Wumei and the Chum Kiu Form of Wing Chun. I can also see similarities to my own martial art aswell. It would be interesting to see how Wumei would be applied to multiple strikes at the same time. :)

Likewise. Wu Mei seems to focus more on "distance", while Wing Chun invades the base, yet the roots are similar. Good eye.

@@davidwilliams4837 All that was shown was a tiny part of 2 of the 5 forms. I would love to see all 5 empty hand forms so we can make comparisons between it and other styles that it seems to have had an influence on. It is definitely possible that Wing Chun is a condensed version that was meant to transfer the high skills of Wumei with less curriculum (for revolutionaries she trained) and that White Crane is greatly elaborated system based upon those base ideas.

Character Rank - what you believe is not my business. I was doing chinese martial arts long before i studied grappling arts. Im willing to have a reasonable dialogue with anyone but ive been around martial artists long enough that whilst some are easily led, others are arrogant. Im sure ive been both at varying times but ive also come full circle to realize that, for example, some arts have a value beyond what is initially understood at first glance. I posted in good faith in the first instance and neither invited nor wrote anything controversial enough to warrant someone threatening to “retire my (predeceased) sifu.” I wish you well on your path.

Magnificent! I am surprised how much that these Masters say is pure internal wing chun as taught by Master Chu Shong Tin. The Yi concept particularily but it's obvious that this is the same Master wu Mei (Ng Mei) our founder. I am amazed to hear this story that she was of the royal Ming family! You called her Empress at first, was that a mistake or did she carry that title when young? Cheers, great work

It would be interesting to see how this open hand contact being presented to an Aikijiujitsu Master would work out. It's all very interesting but from an Aikijiujitsu perspective who incorporates Ying/Yang as well ,I see opportunity for wrist locks, pressure point/contact being presented, arm locks, front kicks, take downs etc. Thanks for sharing.

There's a sort-of answer at 19:33 . "It's very hard to defend against this because you don't feel where the power is coming from". So while it's possible to apply grappling and locking on a user of this skill, keep in mind that the latter is just as likely to have also seized you through that open hand contact, except you don't sense it. This skill is called Najin in TaiJi. Check out The Martial Man's interviews with Adam Mizner to see extensive demonstrations of it. :)

I don't know much about this style, but it is related to Wing Chun. And the third form in Wing Chun is specifically to deal with the type of situations you suggest. I assume this style also has similar concepts.
