Wumei Quan and Iron Body & Sticky Hands - With Shane Francis p2

Wumei Quan (Ng Mui Kuen in Cantonese) is a style that attributes it's creation to the Shaolin nun who in southern Chinese folklore was one of the five survivors of the burning of the Shaolin Temple. In this three part series, I meet with Shane Francis, a disciple of the late Antony Wee from Singapore, to learn about this interesting and unique art. Today there are several diverse branches of this art, which can be found in Fujian province, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and New York.

I'm a very skeptical guy, but I'm very impressed with the iron body skills. You don't see that much often around the Wing chun crowd or even in the Kung fu circles

Excellent, really well explained. Sounds very similar to kime in karate, dynamic tension when you strike. How long do you hold onto that tension?

According to some, Wumei was credited as the founder of various martial arts including WuMei, Wing Chun, Dragon style, White Crane, and Five-Pattern Hung Kuen. The “anecdotes and stories”of WuMei, as passed down in the respective arts she founded, were all told orally. These orally histories are nice to have and practitioners should keep these orally transferred stories to honour the ancestors and honour the system in which they practice. I am also in “favour” of keeping these oral records. As nice as these “anecdotes and stories” are, one must remember these oral histories are just oral stories transfer from masters to succession of students across generations. Despite, trying to keep these stories to the original, “oral transfer of facts” are subject to divergence and misinterpretation from its original roots. Furthermore, the lack written records does not help cement the facts. Some of the seasons for the absence of written histories on WuMei were listed under the heading “Disclaimer” in the article, title “The History Of WuMei Passed Down From Grandmaster Chee Kim Thong”, written by Yap Boh Heong (edited by Kieren Krygier) and posted on Martial Man Website (themartialman.com/the-history-of-wumei-passed-down-from-grandmaster-chee-kim-thong/ ). The lack of written records can be contributed to the period where illiteracies are common. Furthermore, WuMei was supposedly to exist during the time of Qing dynasty uprising and White Lotus Rebellion. During this period, it is also common for one to create heroic stories or skewed the facts to gain advantages over the Qing. The Martial Man video: 5 Ancestors Fist (Part 1) | Yap Boh Heong | Season 2 Episode 01 (kzread.info/dash/bejne/anWjyZitmJDOmrQ.html) , at 15:17 mins, Master Yap described their 5 ancestors lineage has 6 ancestor called WuMei. The story described how supposedly WuMei beat the 5 masters with her skill and the 5 masters put the softness in the 5 ancestors fist. At 16.35 mins, Master Yap’s stories also suggested mystery lady walked away and five masters never got her name. At 16:53 mins Master Yap mentioned “ .. We suspect, we don’t know… “ and noted WuMei is the possible contributor to softness in their 5 ancestors fist. Master Yap also involve in subsequent videos describing his orally WuMei history and his interpretation of his WuMei lineage. In Monkey Steals Peach vids, Sifu Shane Frances described his understanding of his lineage. Again, Sifu Frances based his best understanding for oral history passed down from his master and demonstrated his best understanding of the WuMei art that his has learned. The New York WuMei group also done vids doing their best to describe their lineage history and demonstrate their best on their understanding in their Wumei system, no different to Master Yap and Sifu Frances. Peter Jeck, you may be correct to say Sifu Frances system is not WuMei Quan. However, to say WuMei is “from 5 ancestors” implies that WuMei did not create the quan, rather the 5 masters were the creators. Is it possibly the 5 ancestors name the fist after WuMei after the 5 ancestors created it??? I think we need to have an open mind, respect each other lineages and their practices. We also need to remember one may learn their art from a master, but one’s interpretation, exposure to other arts or circumstances and exchange with other masters will have influences on the original style they have learnt. Classic example is taichi quan. If we take the history of Chen family as the original founder, we can see Zhaobao taichi and thunder taichi have similar flavour and movement to Chen. Although Yang obtained his art from Chen he has modified his art and Yang taichi was invented. Wu is derived from Yang but their form has a lean. Sun and Hao also have links to Chen, yet they look different. If we want to discuss a “youngish” martial art divergence, Wing Chun is a good example. There are various Wing Chun branches including Yip Man, Yiu Choi, Jiu Wan, Gulao, Pan Nam, Yuen Kay Shan etc... to name a few. Some of the Vietnam Lineages looks vastly different and softer to Yip Man’s lineage, so are they better than the Yip Man people? Even within Yip Man lineage there are vast amount of divergences from way one’s stand to one’s hand movements. For more information Wing Chun branches, I suggest reading books and viewing videos from Sifu Sergio Pascal. Sorry for the long-winded words. I am not here to put people down or discredit lineages oral historical records. There are enough problems as it is from assumptions based oral historical information. We don’t need more Trump-like-Covid-19 cures, with partial facts of bleach kills germs, but no way we can inject that chemical into our body to kill the Covid-19 virus. WuMei quan is a rare art with a handful of lineages. It is more constructive to preserve what is now for future generations rather than destroy the little of what still in existences.
