The idea of brushing the arm was interesting. As Adam Hsu says the brushing arm not only prevents injury to the defender as the defender blocks the attacking arm but by brushing or sliding against the attacking limb with multiple points of contact the attacking arm is simultaneously redirected from its attacking trajectory. I saw a practical application of this brushing defensive concept as I was watching a Western style boxing match. I remember watching the late Mexican great boxer, Salvador Sanchez, defending against his opponents right hand punch during the fight. As the opponent executed his rear hand right cross punch Sanchez extended his lead left hand jab toward the chin of his opponent while simultaneously sliding his jabbing arm along the inside of his opponents attacking arm thus effectively redirecting his opponents punching arm and striking his opponent upon the chin with the same motion.

there are many martial arts styles that look weird and silly (and this is coming from someone that loves all traditional martial arts) but this one seems to be different. when he was talking about the brushing i had the idee of weapons in my mind. that is the same thing you would do with swords to prevent the blade from breakin. it does sound very effective.

Here we can clearly see a showing of the chinese roots of karate. These principles are roughly the same as the japanese martial art. Concepts like the spiraling motion of the tsuki and its impact on the target with the energy piercing through it, the importance of the hikite and the flowing energy that results by connecting all body parts in a single harmonious unit, the 50/50 nature of all karate "blocks" (simultaneously attacks and blocks). Good stuff. Oss!

"Brushing" is also useful to seize the opponent's balance. When you sink your elbow using your back muscles and apply a spiral force on your opponent's rigid arm, you will take his balance because he will feel pulled to the ground. It's very similar to the feeling that you get when someone pushes against a door with his strenght and then the door gets opened from someone on the other side: the one pushing loses its balance and goes straight to the ground.

It has also started to deflect an attack before the defenders optimal( maximum force) position has been reached.. effectively making it a quicker response whose precision can then be adjusted. It also keeps recruiting newer muscle fibres thus generating a graded controlled force .. effectively preventing overshooting and useless expense of energy. It also gives time to the defender to adjust his centre of gravity.. improving balance. And it provides tactile sensations and elicits conditioned reflexes when attacks are blindspotted or faster than the eye can see or brain can react to.. something hard touches could never condition a practiotioner to.

Sifu Adams knuckles are so flat. Our old Sifu Anthony Gohs hands are like that . Like small anvils . He taught a class on bone conditioning where he demonstrated on a tree out front . Very impressive, years of conditioning his hands forearms instep and shins made them solid like steel. He was always as calm and friendly as Sifu Adam but you’d always catch a glint in his eye when it was time for sparring or a proper match.A lesson from Sifu was never excessive but just enough force to help you understand how the technique actually worked and how important strength conditioning and practical practice was. It never got old seeing our older Sifu walk through the class join locking everyone. It wasn’t till I had it demonstrated on myself that I understood how much work needed to go into learning these techniques. These men are a wealth of knowledge.

On the other hand, Chang Chuan (Long Fist) has a long tradition, considered an external style. As soon as i saw "Long Fist" i got excited. One of the best styles of Kung Fu i think going back centuries really enjoyed this video. It would be great to have an episode with Taipei's "Monkey Fist Door" Kung Fu Master as he is located in Taipei also i believe.

PhilOfSilat I'm happy you enjoyed the video. Master Hsu is well trained in many arts, and in his opinion, Long First is the most complete style. It's an interesting martial art for sure. I'm intrigued to know more about the ”Monkey fist door.” I will certainly investigate further when I return to Taipei later this year 🙏

Brushing works well for redirecting. In Southern styles the forearms are conditioned to hit and take hits. It depends on how you want to fight.

Brushing not only protect oneself not getting hurt, but also be more sticky. It means hand stick to enemy’s hand to keep controlling and attempting to open up enemy’s defense. If block or knock, one attack was prevented but enemy’s hand become free and ready for second attack. If sticky, one can keep controlling.

Wow he’s very knowledgeable and likeable sifu. He has no ego and has nothing to prove. I took wushu for 2 years and was clueless on the practical aspect of long fist, they just told me to follow the moves without a breakdown and meaning behind each move. His Kung fu seems similar to wing chun as we don’t fight opponents arms which is called chasing hands. This video was very interesting。

It's always nice to start with Long Fist alright. Totally agree with that as a Long Fist practicer myself. But if the teacher would let his students pay more attention to their foundation rather than just practice with those movements, it could be much better both for their health and their exercising results.

good video, the brushing technique is identical to some redirecting actions done with sword and just like he explains it's done so you don't hurt your arm same is true with the blade not wanting to damage your edge. along with with also maintaining momentum to circle back for a counter cut
