The Arabian Nights: The Book of The 1001 Nights, Plus Other Folio Society Books

MORE BOOKS ‪@TwoMiceOnMyBookshelf‬
"What do Jane Austen, William Makepeace Thackeray, Charles Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, Robert Louis Stevenson, Joseph Conrad, H.G. Wells, James Joyce, Salman Rushdie, and Hanan Al-Shaykh have in common? [...] Other than all being great authors who write in English, they were all influenced by One Thousand and One Nights. It’s difficult to overstate the significance of One Thousand and One Nights in our literary tradition, and yet this work of literature historically bore little resemblance to what we might recognize today as the Arabian Nights. ...." ( blog.oup.com/2016/12/arabic-t... )
"Where do the Thousand and One Nights begin? Rather than existing as a definitive text, the Nights have always been an evolving corpus. As products of an oral folkloric tradition, early stories probably changed and shifted to suit their audience's tastes. The oldest extant written text that we have is a Syrian manuscript from the 14th century, the manuscript later used by Galland. [1] But we know that the Nights existed in some form earlier than that: texts from as far back as the 10th century refer to the collection by name. [2] Furthermore, scholars believe that antecedents for many of the tales included in the Nights had been circulating in both oral and written form for centuries before the creation of the Syrian manuscript, even within Europe itself.[3]
It was only after the Frenchman Antoine Galland encountered these stories and decided to translate them that the Nights began to take the more fixed, institutionalized form in which we know them today. And yet, the current corpus of tales making up the Nights is truly a mixed group: as Muhsin Mahdi puts it, "[T]he collections of stories that nowadays are presented under the umbrella of the Nights consist of every possible story of genuine or pretended Arabic origin. They are diverse in form, provenance, and date of composition. It hardly makes any sense to speak of them as a group. How and why this strange circumstance arose is a fascinating, complex, and instructive story that began early in the eighteenth century and was populated by a host of translators and editors responding to changing taste, mood, interest, and expectation." [4] Few texts have been so strongly reshaped, re-appropriated, and rewritten by the continual process of translation as the Nights." ( coursewikis.fas.harvard.edu/a... )
----- There are two more recent translations that I am currently interested in investigating further. One is by Michael Lyons, and the other by Husain Haddawy. Both of which I owned and will chat about in a different video(s).
(Note that Haddawy's Sinbad and Alibaba, which are thought to have been created by Mardrus, and not based on actual corpus, is usually published as a second volume)

Ah, I can't believe you traded in your set - I've been looking for an affordable copy of these for a while. But mainly because it's so hard to find the Kay Nielsen illustrations in vol 1 elsewhere (unless you can afford the Taschen) - I agree the choice of translation was not the best... Looking forward to seeing what followed you home in the next vid... 💕

It was a hard decision to make. These being Mathers and my lack of space with the new incoming books from FS (heh) forced me to finally made the call. The illustrations were the only reason why I was holding on to them, but even those finally were not a good enough reason to hold on to them. (How do you mean by Kay Nielsen's illustration in Vol 1 is hard to find elsewhere...?) From what I could see, the highest this six vol sold for was GBP 170 in the UK. But shipping cost from there to our part of the world would be a bit much I suppose. Books have been the most difficult for me to let go so far, and they have been the most expensive to move around with at times (Except the times I have a container load to ship along with the move, since they charge by the volume and not weight). And when I am finally able to bring myself to sell, selling internationally online for a set like this is difficult due to shipping costs, even to Australia. When I tried, there was no interest within New Zealand. I was in a 1001 Nights bender one time and have way too many of them. I have at least three other sets to share here. With one set also going away, but I don't believe that one is as collectible. You might be able to help me decide when I show them :)

Murasaki & Co Yes, I’ve had to move with books as well, and it’s ridiculously hard. Most of Kay Nielsen’s watercolours for 1001 Nights weren’t originally published, so they are hard to find, and this set is one of the few places you can see them - Taschen have recently published a very expensive edition that looks lovely but is out of my budget. I too have an indefensible number of Arabian Nights volumes in my library 😂

@@BeautifulBooks Ah yes. I saw that on Pontus Presents. That man is certainly a passionate bibliophile! A man after my own heart! I have been eyeing that for awhile and decided that I am now in a position to get it. So that was also an element to my decision to finally let go of this set. I need to go through your channel to check out your old videos :) I would love to see your 1001 Nights collection and your criteria for collecting them. Right now, Michael Lyons' Penguin Deluxe Limited Edition (or whatever it is called, it is a set of three hardback books quarter bound in cloth in a slip case, and it is white and blue in colour which came out in 2008) set is my most precious one. It is out of print, and seemed to have gone nuts in the secondary market. But for me they are special because of the translation and the nice binding :) Having said that I am very fond of my Haddawy as well as it took me a long time to find the two volume Everyman's Library. They are still in print now I think so I am not sure why it was so hard to find for me at the time.

Murasaki & Co oooh, I think the Taschen would be a much better way to appreciate Nielsen’s artwork 😀 My Arabian Nights collection has various translations, I’m usually drawn to the illustrations- it’s very inspiring to artists! (Don’t have these on KZread yet though, you haven’t missed them...)

@@BeautifulBooks Aha! You are an artist! Not sure what your artistic speciality is, but I do love your stop motion animation bits in your videos and how you edit them generally! They certainly have artistic flairs! Yes I did a quick search of your channel and saw that there was no Arabian Nights. Yet 😁 At the moment I am rather obsessed by understanding the various translations than I am wanting to read the books. Heh. So I look forward to when, or if, you post them 😄 No pressure of course! Judging from your edits your videos take more time to do compared to some others and I know that life in itself is a handful without KZread 😅

Hello Jamie :) Part of my wish list for this life is to have a wood burner or fire place in the house, and a library. The first one is fulfilled. The second... is not looking promising, but I have not given up :) For now though, I have to be ruthless, to make way for the new, the old must go! As sad as I am about it!!

I received NZD $80 in trade for the lot and I picked two FS books :) They are now selling the set for NZD $260 (about SGD $225-230). I saw the same set sold in an auction for GBP 170 in the UK, which translate to over NZD $300 (SGD $263, or about USD $190 more or less with current exchange rate in Sept 2019). I will film a better video with lots of close ups for the other books :)

Each of the six volumes of FS’ The Arabian Night has been illustrated by a different artist. Vol I is filled with the illustration of Kay Nielsen, whose body of work made up a period in the early 1900 that is known as “The Golden Age of Illustration”, along side those of Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. ------ STAY TUNED FOR A VIDEO OF THE 21 FACSIMILES BY TASCHEN OF HIS ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS FOR "1001 NIGHTS"

Awwww.... It was not an easy decision and I still feel pangs for sadness now. But to put it in perspective, this is not the nicest or the first time I had to do something like this. It can become unbearable emotionally and financially when the two life styles, the internationally agile and the more traditionally settled way, clashes.... and the best way to handle that is to be ruthless with your selection process. Regularly.... Thank you for being here!
