I love leather bound books so much, I know everyone says "don't judge a book by it's cover" however I love it when time is taken into designing the book cover. Not only does it help the artists, but it just looks so appealing!
What a beautiful book! I'm ordering it right now, thanks for making this video! :)
Amazing how these Barnes and Nobles books are more beautiful than most Folio Society editions whilst being only a fraction of the price.
Your voice is mesmerizing. This is great ASMR lol
Lovely edition! The sufi aesthetic is breathtaking. Have you come across translations by Husein Haddawy and Michael Lyons? They were supposed to be a more faithful translations of the original text, but I have yet to research this further. It seems to be a whole field of study. Which is understandable I suppose. But it means a bit more slogging than the average casual reading and trawling the net for some info. Thank you for a thorough walkthrough of this edition!
The Tale of Prince Saif al Malook, is in my opinion, the best story in the collection and the most well known Arabian nights story in the Eastern countries, especially in South Asia. Definitely worth a read.
I bought this today at a local store it's still sealed so I looked up this video before hand very nice review / book
I bought this same exact book because it was so doggone pretty. I think the paint smudging some people report could be because they are in humid climates. I have a lot of the B&N leather bounds and I have never had an issue.
Thank you for showing us these lovely books
I grew up with a children's edition. Never knew how bowldlerised it was till I was an adult!
Beautiful book omg i wish i had it it looks so pretty!!!!
Note that the review is of the edition, not of the work itself. Although be it thorough.
Another great vid.
Translated by my hero and one of the greatest men of his time Sir Captain Richard Francis Burton. Read about Burton you won't believe what the man did.
I put this beauty book on my wish list.
Beautiful book.
This video actually made me order this immediately
This and Moby Dick have to be two of the best designed B&N classics.

@@asmaesafa8096 This about 4 years late, but Mardrus & Mathers have a complete 1001 nights translation "The Book of The Thousand Nights & One Night". It's 4 volumes in a slipcase if you opt for a physical copy. Still expensive (figure on spending over $120), but it's an excellent evocative translation & fully complete, weighing in at ~2400 pages. You can get an ebook version of it also. FWIW.
Thanks bro
Arabs are not indians Arabs in English's eye look like indians but this is wrong . Look at the title of the book . It's like the indian font
Dennis, how the Burton's translation feel when reading? Besides his archaic, does this version has any type errors?

I thought the two were the same :/ seems the text is at the very least. They both miss some stories from 1001 nights. I ordered the cantvury edition for 15 a few hours ago. Now I'm kinda questioning if I should order this one instead. Eventhough it's double the price
Hi, I'm trying to find out something about this book before I try and get my hands on a copy. I'm not familiar with how exactly Sinbad the Sailor story is usually formatted. Are all 7 voyages included in this edition? Thanks!

Is it the complete collection of Arabian nights or just one volume?
@FoolishFishBooks
Жыл бұрын
I believe the complete was only ever translated into French, and it spans 10 volumes. The closest we come in teh ENglish Language is a recent translation that spans 3 volumes. This is a 19th Century translation that just compiles the "Greatest Hits" so to speak.

@@FoolishFishBooks That's the Penguin Classics version. There's also a 4 volume Mardrus & Mathers translation that's complete & comes in a slipcase; it's 2400 pages! I have both. The Mardrus & Mathers version is somewhat hard to find now though.

It's the selected stories compiled as the Arabian Nights at the turn of the 20th century, not the full 1001 nights which would indeed span between 3 and 10 volumes depending on the font and paper thickness.

According to some contemporary translators like René Khawam, there weren't actually 1001 nights, but an expression to describe there were too many. His version is excellent.
Man I thought I bought this version. Apparently I didn't pay attention and bought a simpler leather bound edition that doesn't have all the beautiful illustrations etc. It was only 15 euro though compared to the 35 that the barnes and noble version is. It's the official Canterbury classics version I believe. It has the same symbol as the Canterbury / barnes and noble leatherbound art of war. Only sad thing is that both these versions are NOT complete editions of 1001 Night. Maybe that's why they called it Arabian nights instead of 1001 nights. I'm glad they are the true adult version and not children books though. Although it's funny seeing all the angry parents etc that thought they were buying a story book for their children Anyway wondering if I should cancel the one I bought and order this one instead. But I did hear that the cover of this one gets damaged quickly and the gilding comes odd

These versions are called Arabian Nights because it was the name Burton gave the book, it´s not related with the fact it's a selection of tales. Many other editions are called 1001 Nights and are also anthologies. This other name, with the number of nights, is the one Antoine Galland gave the book, the very first translator of them.

@@jesusdelcanto9715 ah explains a lot. In Turkish it's known as 1001 nights. I think that's how it's generally known in the middle east. Ps both versions have some different stories. So I imagine they're not completely versions of Burtons work... It's a real shame really I wish we had a full version

In the Canterbury Classics instead of "Sleeper and the waker" (chpt 5) it's "Tale of the enchanted horse" "Tale of the tailor" is "Abu Mohammed lazy bones" And a few others are also different but most are the same and follow the same structure. Both have equal chapters. I know the CC edition misses some stories. I wonder if they both got the stories the other misses. Or if they Judy use different names E.g the second las chapter "Tale of Ali bin Bakkar...." is "the adventures of mercury Ali of Cairo" could be the same Ali lol
Shoutout to Sir Richard for almost getting his ass killed in Mecca, haha
