In the history of mankind, there is a shameful page that few people remember today. But just a hundred years ago, zoos with people exhibited for public entertainment next to animals in cages or open-air enclosures were quite popular.
In the new episode of HOW IT WAS, we will recollect the shameful history of human zoos. We’ll tell you about the Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, where Saami, Nubians, and Inuit were exhibited next to animals, about the freak circuses (sideshows) that were popular from the 17th till the 19th centuries, and about the fate of their “exhibits” - the Camel Girl, the Siamese twins Lazarus and Joannes, the Black Venus, and others. You’ll learn about relatively recent events, like the World Expo 58 in Belgium, which exhibited the inhabitants of an entire Congolese village. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, one of the exhibits in the Bronx Zoo was a pygmy kidnapped from Congo. And finally, we’ll answer the question: do human zoo exhibits belong in the past or did they just change their name?
