STASI PRISON

State Security Service (Staatssicherheitsdienst, SSD), commonly known as the Stasi. Was the official state security service of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). It has been described as one of the most effective and repressive intelligence and secret police agencies ever to have existed. The Stasi was headquartered in East Berlin, with an extensive complex in Berlin-Lichtenberg and several smaller facilities throughout the city. One of its main tasks was spying on the population, mainly through a vast network of citizens turned informants, and fighting any opposition by overt and covert measures, including hidden psychological destruction of dissidents (Zersetzung, literally meaning decomposition). It arrested 250,000 people as political prisoners during its existence. The Stasi also maintained contacts, and occasionally cooperated, with Western terrorists.
Numerous Stasi officials were prosecuted for their crimes after 1990. After German reunification, the surveillance files that the Stasi had maintained on millions of East Germans were laid open, so that any citizen could inspect their personal file on request; these files are now maintained by the Stasi Records Agency.

This country truly resembled Oceania (1984), except the DDR was real. And even then there are folks who think that communism is great. And for those who think that this practice was only in communist DDR, it wasn't, the other East European countries had similar agencies, Albania quite notorious.

Sigurimi was the Albanian secret police. There, they had other problems. Lack of food to feed the population. So they invented enemies. Securitate in Romania was famous too... I cannot talk about communism because i was born in a western county. My grand dad from my mum side was a communist member of parliament. Lovely man but the propaganda on me when i was six was massive!!! Honestly i never understood how me from the age of five could see that people in these countries were starving. But i get mad when some claim that the communists were the same with the nazis. No!!! They had kind ideals. Wrong but good. I was in the army for years and i lived nationalism. It is wrong. Communism is perfect but requires perfect people. And there arent many of those.

I am very much ashamed that the people in charge (from Erich Mielke down to the ordinary Stasi officer) never have been made responsible and brought to trial for their dire deeds. In Germany we obviously dont want to talk about the dreadful things in our past. We prefer to push such things away. Like they did it with their dreadful Covid policy.

@@hughmungus1767 I will accept any criticism of the DDR and the Stasi. But to compare the DDR with the Third Reich and the Stasi to Gestapo by calling them both evil, implying that they were basically the same doing the same things is wrong to say the least and an insult. What the German people or some of them feel about the Third Reich and Gestapo is their own business and I respect it. But people in other countries especially small ones like mine that never hurt anyone and regarding Germany they never even had negative feelings about the German people and ended up occupied with thousands dead, innocent people women and children tortured and excecuted by the Germans without never doing anything against Germany there can be no comparison between the two. Additionally the Nazis made hate and death their official ideology. And im certain many germans today agree with that. Im not demonizing the whole German nation. There are equally Germans who contributed massively to humanity and civilisation. Coming to the DDR and Stasi, to talk the hard truth, you had a minority of communists imposed by the USSR to rule the German Democratic Republic (sounds like science fiction today). The DDR officials apart from their ideological fanaticism had been fought and imprisoned by the Nazis. People like Ulbricht and Honecker were no angels but people of their times. They obviously knew that the majority of their population supported Hitler so creating the Stasi was more than a neccessity. Mielke knew very well that total control of the population was vital. They knew what people thought of them. And adding up the stalinist soviet paranoia, the cold war, they created the Stasi. We are talking about a German Communist State not any communist state!! What is ironic is the fact that the German DNA and by that I mean thinking of germany as being better and above all the others, was Ulbricht's downfall!! When the USSR asked for more money by the DDR, Ulbricht, furious said in public that we cannot pay the USSRs incompetence!! We are managing fine by ourselves and if we didnt need to pay you we would be fine!! Because we are the DDR ( meaning we are Germans). And he was right!! Without the money to the USSR, the cost for weapons and later the leaders loosing touch with reality and society, despite the fact that only ten percent of the population were communists, the DDR would have survived succesfuly. Honecker and the others were not like the nazis and the Stasi didnt do the crimes that nazis did!! So, in my opinion you cannot say they were both evil. Totalitarianism is bad and good people suffered in East Germany. But nothing like the suffering of the world where the nazis and Gestapo occupied!

I remember a documentary I saw about a young East German couple who found out they were expecting their first child. While they had grown up in East Germany and felt they could endure that life themselves, they didn't want it for their child so they decided to see if they could get to the West. There was no legal way that they could emigrate so they started looking for weak spots in the Wall. While walking through a forest near to the Wall but still on the eastern side, shots rang out, fired by border guards who had not even bothered to tell them to stop. The man knocked his wife over and covered her with his own body to protect her from further shots but it was already too late. One of the border guards bullets had already hit and killed her and their unborn baby. He was arrested and sent to prison for five years, then given a bill for the price of the bullets the guard had used to kill his wife and baby, which he was forced to pay. If this is your idea of a "beautiful" country, you have been truly warped by wherever you grew up. Any country that won't let its citizens leave legally and shoots them without warningn for trying to leave illegally is not even a decent society, let alone a beautiful one.
