The Angel of Death: A Horrifying True Crime Story | Real Stories True Crime Documentary

Фильм және анимация

True Crime Story. An alarming number of deaths occurring in the Intensive Care Unit of a California hospital had staff members highly concerned. Hospital staffers suspected one of the respiratory therapists was up to something. Rumors surfaced of a “magic syringe” used by the therapist, possibly to administer poison to kill patients in the hospital.
When drugs were found in the therapist’s possession, investigators brought him in for questioning, at which time he admitted to killing hundreds of people. Without corroborating evidence, however, authorities would have to let him go.
Forensic scientists were brought in to develop a method of detecting the suspected poisons in the bodies of past victims. When poison was detected in several bodies exhumed by authorities, the respiratory therapist called “the angel of death” would finally be convicted.

As a retired nurse, I am deeply disturbed by all the RT's and nurses who didn't report his behavior as soon as they saw it. For an RT to have so many drugs in his possession was a huge red flag even for the 1980's and 1990's.

Absolutely. Even back in the 80s we nurses and RT had to double sign out narcs. I know there are ways around anything, but unless he was a traveler, the staff should have not only noticed, but immediately reported that narcs, and especially Succs, was being found. The Succs really makes me wonder how he had availability to it. Was it left over to be wasted and pocketed instead? The whole thing is unbelievably horrible. So glad he was stopped and measures put in place to make it much more difficult to obtain these meds. Pain in the backside when ordered, but worth it when putting everything in perspective.

You act so righteous, nurses are absolute scumbags. The unexplained deaths should have been reported by the nurses; nothing like nurses--sociopaths and liars. By far, the lowest of all occupations no matter how overpaid. Most likely the unexplained deaths were presumed due to the unethical care of the nurses and that's why no one linked it to a serial killer.

That's because unfortunately there are instances where people confess under duress, through manipulation or they are trying to become notorious by 'taking credit' for another's crimes. If you're familiar with the case of Henry Lee Lucas, he fake confessed to multiple murders with the aid of law enforcement even though it was later found out it was physically impossible for him to have been at the scene of many of them. Imagine putting away the wrong person behind bars. It just leaves the real murderer free to continue as they were.

That's the problem Too many of the nurses are sat around Paperwork on computer? As a retired nurse from 60's onwards, we were constantly checking on patients We rarely sat down unless on a break The nurse in charge would check all recordings made by nurses and enter it ready for passing on during 'handover'. On the grave-yard or night shifts there would be a regular senior sister making her ' rounds' on the wards or units allocated to her Very, very rare would a patient be alone, with 2 nurses monitoring or giving attention to ensure patient was comfortable. My son, at a very young age, suffered from infections in his throat and ears At one point his temperature soared to a dangerous level, and he was transferred to ICU During any of his hospital stays myself or another family member, would be with him In the 70's this didn't go down well with nurse in charge ( sister), But I insisted He recovered, had tonsils etc removed once he was stable He's now a very fit, healthy, in his 40's and an epidemiologist

They did the x-rays on his lungs to find he had double pneumonia. What I found strange was the fact that the ICU doctor kept telling my sister he would not make it through, and he wanted my sister to not resuscitate him. That statement said all I needed to know that this doctor dose not care for his patience. I did not feel safe thereafter his remarks and even inform my sister that I believe this doctor is going to kill your son. My nephew started improving and was on the road to recovery then less than 72 hours later he is vented within 10 hours after that is giving medicine within one minute after that is gone. If the symptoms are not seen, identified and addressed appropriately is because most nurses are either poorly trained or overwhelmed with work. In August of 2022 I was in the hospital for an illness: whenever I pushed the call button it took a nurse assistant (not even a nurse) an average of 20 minutes just to respond to the call and another 20 to show up; between shift changes 2 hours before anyone would come into my room and find out if I were dead or alive! The biggest problem hospitals have theses days is lack of qualified nurses, and nurses are scarce because colleges INTENTIONALLY do not graduate many. I think it's about time that colleges and universities stop the cohort system which severely limits the number of nursing students allowed in the program each year and begin to implement a system that allows as many students to attend nursing courses as any other major. Additionally, the cohort system, because of the way it's designed, expels a student from the program for failing (or passing with a low score) just one course instead of giving him/her the opportunity to retake that course, forcing that student to have to start the program again the following year, thus waisting precious time. And that is IF there is room in the following year program since usually other students, who were on the waiting list to enter the program, have priority. Therefore, considering the low chances of getting back into the program, most students quit nursing altogether and choose another field. This system is not practical and has to change.

Had a situation like this out in NJ back in the 90s and early 2000s, I had heard about it vaguely when the nurse was arrested, but was young and did not pay much attention to it. I believe he was charged with 29 murders but is believed to have killed up to 400+. Recently Netflix made both a documentary and a movie about the case. What messed me up the most, aside from the belief he might have killed over 400 people, was that all the hospitals he worked at knew, most of the staff suspected, and if he had not broken down and confessed, he would have kept on going, hospital to hospital, murder after murder, no end in sight. All because the hospitals don't want a scandal and lawsuits. Money....

When my dad had terminal cancer I heard a nurse telling him he was going to die and asking him how did it make him feel and it was so obvious she was getting off on the power trip. I spoke to someone and she was not allowed to tell patients they were terminal. I didn't pursue it but it has bothered me ever since as I now know a little more about psychology and I am convinced she was a psychopath by how she told him and kept pushing it, twisting the knife in metaphorically speaking and by how she behaved when he got upset. She was enjoying his pain at his realization he was never leaving that bed and only had days to live.

This is horrifying and actually made me feel physically ill reading it. What kind of sicko gets off on someone's fear. My dad died four years ago on the 18th of this month and one of the nurses was do nasty and acted like she hated her job. Little did she know that my stepfather sister who has been with me since Iwas 7 years old (I'm now 42) was her boss. Needless to say we weren't the first complaint against her. It takes a spe ill kind of nurse to deal with end of life patients. I'm so sorry this happened to your father.

@@thebarefootfarm5919 - I'm sorry your father went through that. In a weird way, the family agreed that it worked out better but it has stayed with me as she is probably doing this to others or worse. In my father's case, my dad had not accepted that he was dying even though the doctors had said there was nothing more they could do he believed he'd somehow beat it. So he was still trying to get people to fix it. It was only after she spelt it out so clearly that he accepted it. It was the only time I ever saw him cry. He had a very difficult childhood during the war, his house was hit with a bomb and there were a lot of death and food shortages and so never showed much emotion. So we took him home and put a hospital bed by the window so he could see his garden and he stopped fighting and being angry at being ill and excepted it was time to make peace. After a few days, he said; "it has been a wonderful life" and passed away. Take care.

The arrest was handled with kid gloves. So the hospital wasn’t inadvertently be found to hide a monster. I did meet him for an interview but at the time put him down as a possible employee due to having enough already on hand. That was my only interaction with him. The 2 medications he used were paralyzing agents. One paralyzed the patient and the other caused a comatose state. As I said, I remember the shock of his crimes more than I remember him. I would like to point out…that the Intensive Care Unit and the Telemetry floors are typically the only floors that monitor hearts. In his case he could have caused many, many more deaths then what he was accused of.

First, that guy warned him off his patient, then the lady colleague who knew about him (he had confessed to her), told him: "Leave her (as in, her patient) alone". But other than a number of individual initiatives, he was let to kill for fear that the hospital would suffer. It seems to me that even the police were more scared of his confession than of his acts. Fortunately, the media found out. Nowadays, with the state the media is in, even that would be without much consequence.

Even though this isn't nearly at this scale of crime, I worked as a Dietary Aid/CNA for about 4-5 years at Apple Rehab, roughly between 2016-2021. For the nurses and doctors around Efren Saldivar, who saw things that were weird, who saw drugs hidden around, and kept secret? That scarily happens all the time. The amount of times I've personally seen a CNA or a nurse either harm, leave a patient in an unsafe condition or ignored a patient in need, or walk into work high, smoke in the facility (which isn't allowed), ect, and nothing was done. Between those 5 years, I've have made formal reports to HR and DHP (Department of Health Professions). But because everyone would get a warning the day/night before that the DHP were coming, everyone would snap into place, and nothing would be done.

I was put in ICU to monitor my blood sugar. I was on camera at times. My husband was allowed to bring me food as long as it followed very strict coloric, carb, suga limits. The meals were checked by the rn before I was given it to eat. There were no incidents. During routine draws after my sugar bottomed out and D50 was pushed they were finding artificial insulin in my blood. We were confronted by an endocrinologist who gave us the results. I was terrified. Someone was intentional giving me insulin. The initial accusation was that my husband was trying to kill me. I was enraged at that allegation. They then suggested that I was doing it to myself. I tols them the were crazy. That i was bed bound, never owned insulin and couldn't possibly have done it. My husband and I were certain this was a witch hunt. We signed out ama (against medical advice) and we went to another hospital, using a different endocrinologist. We never had the issue again. We're absolutely certain that one of the nursing staff had to alter either the saliine drips or any hospital food I received. I believe I would have been killed had we chosen to stay there. 4 diabetic comes from a non diabetic in 72 hours is a huge red flag. If you're able, ask the medicine being given, by whom, and why. Be your biggest advocate.

@@mojojo1980 No, my husband would never do anything to hurt me. As someone who is completely disabled, he's saved my life several times and continues to be my primary caregiver, in addition to working full time, takes care of our home, and the 3 kids (minors at the time). He can easily let my disabilities take their course. My husband is a good man. It's easy for people to point the finger at the person closest to people, when they do that they are missing the chance to figure out what really happened.

This scary. I hope the hospital was sued by every single victims family. As for the nurses and doctors a lot of them knew, I mean this is a man who couldn't wait to spew his guts. He told a lot more people. The doctor who found drugs in his locker just shrugs. The nurse who saw him about to kill a patient says "leave her alone" and moves on with her day. What kind of hospital is this. Disgusting.
