The Amazing Aladdin Lamp

The Amazing Aladdin Lamp. This Aladdin model 23 paraffin lamp was brought in a box with spare parts many years ago now at a local auction for £5 can I get it going? Thought it would come in handy in any power cuts they keep warning us about that may happen in the UK this winter.
As with all paraffin lamps and heaters if used indoors do use them with great caution! And make sure the lamp can't be knocked or fall over also use it in a well-ventilated room well and even better have a Carbon Monoxide detector/alarm fitted in the room you are using a paraffin lamp or heater in.

I'm messing with one like that right now. Just found out that the "flame spreader" is a tuneable item. It should be a snug slip fit and the height of install makes a difference. Mine would light the top of the mantle but not the bottom portion, spreader too deep. I raised the spreader slightly and now it works much better. Just my two cents worth.

Thanks that is very interesting I did not know that I just pushed mine down as far as it would go down! I will have a try at that when I next get the lamp out to light up again Thanks for the interesting comment. Kev.

Yes! It's the opposite of what you may think. (Lower the spreader to raise the glow on the mantle) If the flame spreader is too loose to be a snug fit, slightly bend one of the corners at the notches outward with a pair of needle nose plyers to get it to fit a little tighter. I learned that from the "Kerosenes Lamps of the North" channel.

Enjoyed the video! Thanks. A couple of things. These new mantles are very bad quality. I bought 4 of them (in the red and white boxes), with kind of like a dark blue/green coating and when I burned the coating off, the mantle fell apart in spots. Luckily, I received a refund. I think you have the same issue at 17:39. You're better off purchasing the new OLD STOCK mantles in the orange and blue boxes which were manufactured in Brazil.. They're MUCH more durable than the new ones. Also, the 23 model burners have a hexagon shaped knob. I think yours might be a 21 model.

All very interesting many thanks for your most interesting comment re these poor quality mantels as you can see I'm not up on the Aladdin lamp numbers! So I think you are right about what I have here they are just so lovely and still work and give such a good light out! Thanks again Kev.

I have burned kerosene and lamp fuel in my Aladdin lamps and I am thinking about trying paraffin fuel. Some who have used paraffin fuel say that the wax will eventually clog the wick.

Hi, To be honest, I have only ever used UK Class C1 Top grade paraffin in my Aladdin lamps this seems to burn fine no smell only a little when you put the lamp out but I found this works very well and burns very clean with not a lot of soot or carbon on the wicks So never found any issues using this top-grade paraffin in these lamps at all thanks for your very interesting comment. Kev.

Are you sure that’s a 23?? Looks like a super Aladdin burner to me. The 23 carrier is made of a sort of steel with a galvanised coating. The 21 is similar but gold with smaller tabs. The super Aladdin has a slightly different winder mechanism which is geared for better control. I actually prefer this as the 23 is just a scaled down version on the heater number 203 carrier design. I have a few 23 and one super. To be honest I know the mantle lamps are technically far superior to other types, but they can be temperamental sooting the mantle with room temperature changes ect. They need closely watching whereas the duplex is normally easier to care for. Not to mention cheaper. Good videos, we share quite a few common interests, I enjoy inland boating, older radios and TV sets, although not as old as your vhf type tvs, and of course the paraffin appliances of which I use a number of Aladdin and valor heaters around the house when necessary. Regards, Tim.

Depending on where you live. I bought my mantles from Cumberland General Store in USA. they have a website. They sell all the wicks and many parts for some of the lamps. They still sell entire new lamps also.
