The Alien Penny Experiment

Even better version here: • Silver crystals growin...

In college (50+ yrs ago) chem lab, me and my buddy placed a penny in a 10 ml beaker + 5 ml conc HNO3 under the hood for 60-70 seconds. Then hit it with a shot of di water to stop the reaction. The penny was then removed, rinsed off and was now the thickness, diameter and weight of a dime. This was then scaled up. The vending machines and pay phones were filled with pennies for a couple months…..

It's a displacement reaction. Copper being more reactive than silver displaces the latter out of solution as metallic silver which is seen here to grow as crystals on the copper penny. It's classified as a redox reaction. Later the solution around the penny would turn blue due to formation of copper(II)sulfate

the process is called silver cementation. silver and copper atoms will exchange in silver nitrate due to copper being more reactive than silver. the solution turns blue due to the copper now in solution now called copper nitrate.

In the US, modern pennies are only copper plated, so if you react the zinc out of the center you can pretty easily do the silver/copper exchange and end up with a little bit of silver in blue-green liquid. Looks cooler under a microscope though.

they were mostly copper before 1996, now they're steel, nickle, zinc, and copper plated. there was never any aluminum. silver nitrate was added to water/acid and copper dissolved into solution, while silver crystallized out. cementing, as according to the reactivity series of metals
