The African Flower Square

Scallop Border: • Scalloped Border Croch...
In this video I share how to make this lovely African flower square in crochet.
I made this blanket a couple of years ago and have had a lot of questions regarding it.
Details:
I used a 3.75 mm hook - the same one that is shown in this tutorial today.
amzn.to/3sBUqFv
Susan Bates Finishing Needle for Ends
amzn.to/32AVsaf
The blanket is 36" x 54" - not including the scalloped border.
8 squares across and 11 high.
Each square is 4x4 inches
I used a pack of yarn called "sweet pea" that was created for a "CAL" with Attic 24 . attic24.typepad.com/weblog/sw...
I did not participate in the crochet along - just wanted to use this color recipe for my blanket.
www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/attic...
This one pack was all I needed for the blanket.
If you are in the USA, you can find the yarn here:
www.lovecrafts.com/en-us/p/st...
You won't find the sweetpea pack but here are all the colors in it:
This pack contains 15 balls of Stylecraft Special DK (100g), a 100% acrylic yarn, in the following shades:
Pistachio (1822)
Meadow (1065)
Cypress (1824)
Violet (1277)
Lavender (1188)
Wisteria (1432)
Clematis (1390)
Cream (1005)
Soft Peach (1240)
Candyfloss (1130)
Blush (1833)
Pomegranate (1083)
Fuschia Purple (1827)
Magenta (1084)
Plum (1061)
For the border, I first did hdc's all the way around in green (hdc, chn 2, hdc on corners) . Then, I did another round on this with sc's in the same color I was planning for the scallop edge (purple) . The scallops consisted of 7 dc's with sc's between each to anchor them down. If you want to see a video on how to do this , let me know.

I like the stained glass look in granny square pictures I have seen and I made my first African Flower square trying to achieve that effect. I used a dark brown for Rounds 1, 4 and 6. I used a bright blue/green verigated color for Rounds 2 and 3 and a bright green for Round 5. It came out nicely! I used Red Heart Super Saver in the colors Coffee, Macaw and Jade with a 6.5 mm hook (K). It does look very much like stained glass!

Thank you so much for helping me to complete an afghan that I started some 40 years ago for my son. There was once a pattern which I have been hunting for the past few months to no avail. I decided to find some more modern granny squares and in doing so have just completed this square. Most granny squares just didn't work with the instructions given but yours was by far the best one I found! The reason I have decided on completing this afghan was because some squares were done by my mom and will be a nice keepsake for my son or his two newborn sons! Thank you again and am looking forward to future videos.

Hi there. Thank you for your wonderful instructions on making the African Flower Squares. My first attempt at crocheting after 50 years of knitting! After four months I now have 88 squares and am ready to sew them together. I have watched your video regarding this and think with a little practice, I will be good to go. My question is, you show how to sew 4 of the squares together but what would you suggest for 8 squares across and 11 down. Should I do 8 strips of 11and then sew the strips together? Should I sew 4 across and 4 down and then sew all the squares of 16 together? Should I just sew them together one by one? What would be your suggestion be? Seems like it will get fairly bulky by the end of the process. Thanks for your help! Heather
@PlayHookywithMe

When I did mine I joined several together to make a panel then joined those panels together. So I think that is similar to your 8 strips of 11 that you mentioned. It really is a personal preference and what is most efficient with your yarn as you’re seaming. But that way did work well for me . I’m so glad you are trying crochet!! I hope you are enjoying it !!! I’m you in reverse. After 30 years of crocheting I’m finally learning to knit and I love it! 😆🙌🏻🧶🧶🧶❤️

i've been crocheting for a few months, and i'm currently on my third square, but i find that no matter what i do, by the end, my square always turns out crinkled, like it won't fully flatten out. i am considering blocking the squares to see if they stay flat when stretched, but i just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem. this is a great tutorial nonetheless :)
❤

It sounds like you need to go up a size higher. Try a 5mm. Also you might want to add and extra chain (or stitch) in your corners to help loosen it up. 👍🏻

@PlayHookywithMe
2 жыл бұрын
Hi / I’m a bit confused on what you are asking. Are you looking for a granny square with a flower in the center or are you meaning you this particular square worked up like a more traditional granny square? I have 2 videos with flower granny squares: I have this one that can worked as a traditional granny square. Instead of just working 2sides, you can go around all 4 with your granny clusters. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hXuispuEmpXAp5s.html And here’s a granny square with a flower in the center kzread.info/dash/bejne/k66fwdd-ZbW-osY.html

Oh sure 😀 with the dk /sport weight yarn , the squares are 4.5” x 4.5”inches. I made a 3’ x 4’ ft blanket and used 88 squares total. 8 along the width and 11 rows high. I used a scalloped border which added about and inch to the overall measurement. 💕
Hello this looks gorgeous! If I wanted to increase the size of the squares do I keep repeating the border?
@PlayHookywithMe
2 жыл бұрын
Hi and thank you! Yes, you could repeat the border or just go up a yarn and hook size if you wanted the entire square to look larger. I used a dk/sport weight (3) . You could try a worsted or Aran instead(4) 🧶💕

It doesn’t seem to matter what I am doing. I am on round 5 starting in the exact same spot as you. ALL clusters have the right amount and no matter what after my first four SC there is THREE stitches left so when I skip two I am not going into the spike. Any ideas where I could be going wrong. I moved over one and it worked out until after the first corner and was no longer lining up.
@PlayHookywithMe
6 ай бұрын
It really sounds like you’re overlooking a stitch somewhere. That’s really easy to do because the previous stitches can hide it sometimes. Are you remembering the “p” trick and getting into the top of the stitch leaning to the right? I’d recommend you just “fudge it “ and find a way to just get those stitches in even if you have to add two sc’s into one stitch if nothing else is working. 💕 this is when I wish I could be sitting next to you to see what’s going on to help you more! Keep me posted .

So beautiful. My question would be: how many colours are used, and what is the strategy of keeping overall balance in their appearance. For example when I use five colours with four per square, there is 120 combinations what is about a blanket size. But if not going with one of each, how can I think so that some colours do not over take to different impresion or desired colour dominance?
@PlayHookywithMe
3 жыл бұрын
In the description box, I share the color pack I used. I think it was a pack of 16 colors. I have to admit, Ksenija, I just took a chance and combined colors without much planning. I didn't find it an issue where one color dominated more than the others. One thing that helped - I would put each color to the side after I used it. Then I would not reuse that color until I was finished with all 16. Not a perfect plan, but it worked for me. Hope that helps. xx

Hi Jhan, good question. You can work this in the same color following the video. You might have to slip stitch your way to the starting point of a round but I’m not 100% certain on that. I used a yarn pack that was made for a CAL by another designer (attic 24 , link in description) So I essentially used 1 ball of each color. I joined them with the invisible join : kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmFnq8ysabrTZZs.htmlsi=M34y00jJjSumpHWa Absolutely- use whatever yarn love for your project 🙌🏻💕

I’m not quite sure what you mean , Gill. I don’t have a video where I’m working on this blanket . Just this one and then there is a link to how I joined them . There is a link to it at the end of the video as well as in the description box. I made this blanket before I started doing videos. But if you have questions that weren’t answered in the description box , let me know! 💕

Search on Google or KZread “where is description box in KZread” and you’ll see many videos showing how to find it 💕
You'll have to thank Orion for making an appearance. 😻

Hey! I hope you will find time to answer me because I do not really understand what I'm doing wrong :( Why is my square deformed? It is not flat and bulges where the petals of the 3rd round are. How can I fix this? I use yarn 100m for 50g, hook 3. Maybe I need a bigger hook? Thanks for the video!

I’m not sure what kind of yarn you’re using with a 3mm hook but yes if it’s bulging and looking tight a bigger hook would help this. You can also add a chain in between the clusters you were making to help spread it out too. Extra chains here and there always help loosen things up.

@@PlayHookywithMe Thanks for the answer! I use 100m 50g cotton yarn. Maybe 4,5 mm hook will work better!

@@arsushkasdrawings7349 I can’t determine what size that yarn is but I think you are on the right track with trying a bigger hook- keep me posted! 💕
