The 911's Appeal Is a German Thing

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Everybody has their 'thing'. For John Willhoit, it's certainly a German thing. For the past 37 years, he and his custom 1971 Porsche 911T have been Stuttgart's outpost in Los Angeles County. Whether in his shop restoring classic 356s and 911s or on the road thrashing his own rear-engined machine, Wilholt's German thing is a good thing indeed.

Charles Damery Hey Charles, I got bitten by the Porsche bug nearly 3 years ago ( actually even as a kid with the wall posters & all that ) anyway I got my first Porsche & haven't looked back, it's a Sunday car for me but she's a beast, 1983 SC convertible ( guards red ) air cooled, flat six, no power steering, no ABS, no airbags, incredible exhaust note, anyone out who has dreams about owning one, you just have to do it, trust me you won't regret it.....

Many years ago when I was a teen maybe 12 or 13 I went to visit my uncle in California. He has a 1970's era, light blue metalflake, 911 SC Targa. I got to ride in it for a short trip and I was totally smitten and in love, and have been ever since. My memories of this car are very vivid and like it was yesterday. Its something I will never forget as long as I live. The glorious sound, and the sensation of speed, are absolutely intoxicating. I've owned a 76' 914/4 which comes close but still isn't quite as satisfying as a real air cooled 911.

The most amazing thing to me is the fact that the original paint is still intact and looks that good. I would love to see some close-up images of it but from the video it looks really nice. They have all of the resources to make it perfect but felt that it was too important to have the original paint than a respray of the highest level. Original paint is precious and that was fully recognized.

very nice story, I love how people put older cars on their feet to see the road again. Same happened to me back in 2000-2001 when i saw 996 turbo sitting at Auto show, my jaw dropped, I was still in school- Smiling and checking the car out, thinking I will never own one, only in dreams, BUT it did happen, after hard work and years of saving I finally bought one--- I'm sure this is the car-that i will never let it go.... I'm coming from bmw's and audi's - I also prefer German cars :)

Love when someone takes any Porsche and makes it better than Porsche themselves did but leaves it looking pretty much stock. If I had a Porsche hot rod, i'd want it to look stock on the outside, and be a hell raiser when you stepped on that accelerator......the ultimate "Sleeper" Porsche.

tony mazzuchi Sure thing...and thanks for asking! When you stand on the throttle (gas) and the car starts to behave differently under acceleration, be it whether the car wants to push (understeer, or go in a straight(er) line) or to oversteer (the rearend stepping out and over-rotating...spinning), or maybe even squat, changing the weight bias from front to rear, effectively lightening the front end, will change the dynamic handling of the car, and not just turning of the wheel to steer into a corner. Being able to utilize this type of thing takes a LOT of experience behing the wheel, and the Porsche handles a bit differently than most other cars simply because of the rear-engined/rear-drive layout, so even more practice (and nerve) is necessary to push it to its limits. The more power you put to and given chassis, the more pronounces the effects of that power have on planting that power becomes. Does any of that make sense?

VTEC YO it's a vital part of getting the most out of a sports car. Breaking into a corner shifts the weight balance to the front and gives the front tyres more grip and reduces grip at the back helping rotate the car and cuts understeer. Lifting off mid corner however can reduce grip at the back due to the weight shifting forward and can cause snap oversteer and a spin. Putting your foot down will transfer the weight to the back and give the rear wheels more grip to most this seems counter intuitive Adding throttle as yo come round the apex gives more grip to the back and means you can accelerate a 911 earlier and harder out of a turn. If you drive any powerful car you will feel weight transfer but the feeling is exaggerated in a 911 due to the light front end and the heavy back end.
