I have owned a BMW 2013 M3 for 10 years and a BMW 2019 M550 for 4.5 years - zero problems. The key is to drive moderately, do the maintenance, yes go to a good dealer who knows the vehicle. I have 2 high performance cars but I take care of them and they last. I have owned 6 BMWs, 2 Jaguars and 6 Lexuses and the answer is always do the maintenance.

You made my day Mark when you called the 640 gran coupe for the win.If things go as I expect,I will be purchasing a 2018 model in the near future. This car is so good looking and rare in my neck of the woods.I had thought that it had the n55 and not the b58.Soooo happy to be mistaken!

Hi Ron, my mistake, the gran coupe is an anomoly and runs the n55 which is still a reasonable engine. Still a wi of a car and the n55 is much better than the n54 twin turbo wreck. Still a wonderful ride and a well maintained car can be a fun driver. B58 is just a bit better engine overall.

Thank u Mark for ur early advice...stick w NA & avoid turbo problems! My '07 X3 has been great for going ranches & hi waters, fun to drive also w its steptronic transmission & AWD. When weather permits, nothing can beat the fun as in my top down Z3, having great smile on my face every single time out w it. Their invincible BMW NA inline 6 you highly recommended have been butterly smooth & extremely reliable all these yrs! With regular maintenance of course. When craving for power & luxurious comfort, it's my German hot rod's turn...the NA "REAL" S 63 AMG(not those downsized engined AMGs w turbos lately...losing power in both low & hi rpm). I've been so happy & enjoyable w all these great reliable NA engines all these yrs, thank you again!!

Hey, always appreciate your videos about which cars to buy. In the USA the 640s never got the B58 even in 2019, I never read they received it and kept the N55 throughout the model life. I looked at 640is in Canada and saw the N55 under the hood as well. I agree fully about the B58 but never saw a 640i with one.

  • @ECPP

Haha, sorry I made a mistake, clearly not infallible but the 640 gran coupe is an n55 which is leagues better than the twin turbo n54 limp. I know several people with n55 powered BMWs that are happy and have been for years. Sadly this 40 series is an anomoly. Still a win but just B58 is a bit better sorted.

My old 2002 Bimmer 328 was the most reliable German car my family ever owned out of 6, and it was cheap to fix if you have the right mechanic. Rest were reasonable reasonable, no big issues, just tiny little issues. Audi was the only money pit for me, but YMMV.

I guess that is good in BMW land but I have owned a couple of Japanese cars, Toyota and Mitsubishi for well over 10 years each one and neither ever had to have hoses changed. 150k km on the clock roughly for each. Maybe if you thrash your BMW often the pressure and heat degrades the hoses faster, I guess that's the case.

Life is too short to be going to the shop every 2 weeks. Unless your mechanic looks like Kate Micucci or Alyson Hannigan in which case get a Lada, Yugo or a Fiat and drive it a lot.

You're right sometimes, but I trust SCOTTY KILMER more beacuse he is an auto mechanic for decades,he should be the one to advise on car reliability than all other car analysis. Hey me be wrong sometime but he know much about that thing called cars!!!

BUYER BEWARE!! If you are the type that wants a fun-to-drive car without enduring the annual aggravation of pouring thousands of dollars into "whoops" "gotcha" repair and maintenance costs none of these cars are for you unless you intend to dump them onto someone else before the problems arise. (note: when someone is pushing resale on German cars that's code for dump this turkey before it explodes) Notice how with every one of them he mentions a laundry list of problems you need to ignore in order to consider the cars reliable. Sort of like saying inflation is low if you ignore your grocery bill. This guy is so intent on pushing fun to drive cars he's picking through the dirty underwear trying to find the jocks that stink the least.

I n ew knew there is such a thing as a reliable German car, I've always wnated a 5 series BMW, but everyone told me as long as you have plenty of money in your bank account for a rainy day, then get one.

If you’re concerned about the price of fuel you’re shopping in the wrong segment. Much like boats that get 2 miles per gallon, fuel is still the cheapest part of owning one.
