For machines like the C64, much of what you see is programmed via LUTs (Look-Up Tables). The 6502 didn't have any floating point instructions, so how did we calculate sines and cosines to animate rotating stuff? We used LUTs. And because modulo 360 operations (which are needed to calculate the table index) are equally expensive, we didn't use 360 degrees for a whole circle, but (for example) 256 degrees. Modulo 256 on a 6502 doesn't cost anything. Lots of clever stuff was done on these limited architectures. Modern programmers have (mostly) forgotten about what can be done with very little.

These demos are even more mind-blowing when you can experience them in their full 50 FPS smoothness instead of KZread scaling them down to 30 FPS and making everything jerky.

Funny thing is, in 1982 even the designers of the C64 would not think that some of this stuff was possible on the machine they designed. Because it took thousands of coders a good 20 years to discover all the possibilities of the mighty C64

  • @MonkeyForNothing

@@Blackadder75 That’s right, at some point savvy coders even started using known bugs in the hardware as features too, this of course took some years to fully ”map out” all the bugs in all the chips and how they affect stuff or how it could be exploited for new things. Stuff like that is impossible for engineers to know from the beginning.

There is just something really special about the sid chip..love the sound. These demos are mindblowing. The c64 was an amazing computer thats for sure. I have atleast 5 c64s and also bought the c64 ultimate wich is a brand new motherboard with the c64 on a chip (FPGA)its designed to fit into a c64 case. Wasn't cheap bit worth every cent to me. I also love trouble shooting and repairing c64s... unless i cant hehe

Unfortunately these are not truly impressive to people who don't understand the inherent limitations of the hardware in question. But to us C64 nerds, we get it and appreciate the amazing skill that went into creating them. I remember showing my mom a stupifying demo for the Amiga (can't remember which one it was), but there I was with a huge smile on my face (after I picked my jaw up off the floor) and my mom watched patiently to the end, then said, "Oh, that's nice. Did you want chicken or hamburgers for dinner?" Ideally these are to be experienced at Demo Parties, live. But I live in America and they are almost always held in the eastern hemisphere, such as Hungary, Denmark, Germany, etc. :( You _can_ find KZread videos recorded at these parties though. For example, here's the first demo on the video above, shown live for the first time (it won first place): kzread.info/dash/bejne/dZqfpbBwdK7TgdY.html

@@Rob_III I just mean that playlists offer this + the voting. Now there is this clipping feature, but why do I have to manually and precisely hit the seams to clip if I could just drag'n'drop a playlist? Did I miss commentary? I just now notice black bars around the video (while I am not in full screen). I think the original uploads did not do that.

@@ArneChristianRosenfeldt This video is... this video? What do playlists have to do with it? That would require 5 new uploads. And, yes, that is certainly an option. Another option is to just copy/paste the timestamps from my comment to the video's description. You don't HAVE to click "manually and precisely [to] hit the seams". But if you DO wish to skip to the next demo you and you don't mind you CAN. And if you DO wish to skip to the next demo you and you DO mind then you can always click the timestamps in the video's description as an alternative. I really don't see the problem here.

@@Rob_III All those demos have been uploaded at least two times before ( emulator and real hardware ). I am not writing about your specific comment. I write about people who use content from others in their video. Those people avoid playlists to hide the work of other people, or to hide firsts. With idiotsInCars a lot of dashcam owners don't want their account to be associated with the video. But as I said, C64 demos have all been uploaded before. The worst offender is some guy who copies videos and photos from engine builders and talks about it, but only nonsense.

@@fabulousfab282 Commodore disappeared because of bad developments like the Amiga CDTV, Amiga CD32, and so on. If these devices hadn't been developed, Commodore would probably still be around today. Finally, for the Amiga, for example, there were ready-made AAA mainboards that were supposed to introduce a new standard, or the C65, of which there are unfortunately only a few prototypes that never officially went on sale, like the AAA boards.
