The 392 Rubicon.. BEST Jeep EVER! But here's the Problem!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I give you my thoughts on just how amazing the Jeep Rubicon 392 is and why I feel like it's the best Jeep every made; however, it might be too good. I give you my thoughts on price, availability, and if there's really a market for it. Would you pay over 90k for a Rubicon?

A fairly loaded 3.6L V6 Wrangler stickers for around $65k. Another $13k gets you the 392 engine, Fox suspension, larger brakes, steel knuckles, CV joints, beefed up transmission, 392 exclusive leather seats, all of the safety groups, re-engineered ladder frame, etc. What owners are REALLY paying for is the exclusively, resale value and the satisfying V8 rumble that puts a smile on every owners face when pushing on the fun pedal.

I have bought one and Im currently waiting for another to be built. Keep in mind that many Jeep owners add lifts, 37"-40" tires, heavy armor, bumpers, and winches. The power of the 392 laughs at the added weight while the V6 becomes even more of a dog that it already is, even with deeper gears. Jeep was also smart by making the Rubicon 392 full time 4WD which helps to efficiently put all the power to the ground. The Hellcat Rubicon you drove was 2WD which allowed the power to over power the chassis.

Great Jeep. Great options …what gets me is that you always say would you spend this cash for this Jeep if you’re not in a mountainous region. Or in the sticks. But what I say is….born and raised in Chicago …with hot summers, which the roof is perfect for…and tough tough winters..which the 4x4 is perfect for…why wouldn’t it be right for the upper Midwest in the burbs? This area has the worst streets…with pavement buckles, potholes, uneven surfaces. I gave up owning a car in Chicago…the suspension gets torn to shreds…you need a vehicle like this to handle these ‘off-road’ like conditions even though you’re not in the woods. I feel you guys miss the connection and should stress that more…I don’t need to off-road…but if you’re in Chicago, Jersey,New York, Boston. These have got to be the best option to handle the urban terrain…which can be just as deadly as the trails…believe it or not…great stuff X

The 6.4L engine in a small Wrangler was Jeeps way of giving the middle finger to the world. It makes no practical sense but I’m glad they made it. Jeep leadership still has a sense of humor, every other legacy manufacturer leader would have laughed this idea out of the office.

  • @joshreynolds729

    @joshreynolds729

Yeah I disagree when the hellcat motor comes in other platforms. Jeeps to me have always been overrated and to damn expensive even if it comes with a v6 and they still want 60k when it’s worth 20-40. Then they put the 392 in it that’s being phased out for a reason for way more when a scat can be had for less with less weight. If your going to spend the money I would just get the Durango hellcat, track hawk, or trx. Not saying it’s not nice just to expensive and hard to find for what it is to be middle of the tracks in the upper segment of payments. And dodge always acts like they are lambos when you try to look at them or they just don’t help you. I wanted an suv for my wife but all the Big 3 dealers don’t want to help you and if they do then no deals are given at all or they don’t want to let you test drive them. Shit I’ve even driven up in a hellcat and barely got help. I now understand why people buy Hondas. they actually help you and they are cheaper on fuel, lighter, plus last unlike dodge products. And with gas prices the way they are and all dodge products being heavy sales will go down.

Buying a 392 is a no-brainer choice. The resale value on used 392's are going higher than the markup on new ones. Jeep has cut off all 392 orders atm no one knows if they will open for MY23. Prices for existing new and used are going through the roof. Mine sits in my garage, it's going to be kept stock and low miles and no offroading. I have other jeeps to wheel and drive...the 392 is special and will be one of rare jeeps and why I bought it.

Funny you say that. I have on order with no markup but, the dealer had one on the lot somebody returned with 400 miles on it. Those are the ones being marked up, which they did. And they will resale very high because of the rarity factor. Unfortunately, I don’t have the discipline and will drive it into the ground.

It makes sense to me. A similarly equipped V6 Rubicon is over $60,000. Those who calculated the cost of a used (not new) 392 & trans + needed parts at $4-5000 are way underestimating all the costs needed to make the swap. I think you'd be way closer to $10,000 if you do all of the work yourself & end up with a used drive train. Maybe you could recoup a little by selling the old drive train. Having professionals do the new 392 swap will add $35,000 - $40,000, so you're right where the factory 392 cost (or more) with no factory warranty, etc. To me, buying a new factory 392 is a no brainer.

I ordered my first Jeep ever at the end of November in 2020. I ordered a 2021 JL Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. I ordered mine with the 3.6 liter V-6 w/ eTorque. About 2 weeks after I ordered my Jeep the 392 was announced. I was so freaking bummed. And then the Extreme Recon package was also announced too. Had I known those things I would have waited a few months and ordered a 392 with an Extreme Recon package. But oh well. Other than the eTorque, I love almost everything about my Jeep. It is definitely the most capable off road vehicle that I have ever owned. I do need to buy another truck though after I pay off my Jeep because I used the heck out of my trucks in the past. But that’s still another 2 to 3 years away.

I am picking up my 392XR on Friday. It is like Jeeps version of a G Wagon imho. I always liked Jeeps but never bought one because they lacked power and some other features I wanted in a daily driver. Now I can get a great utilitarian vehicle with off road styling AND power. It has just enough luxury, like heated seats/steering wheel and ACC, but still bare bones enough so i can hose it out. Everything I want in an SUV. Yeah, it is a little pricey but I think it is worth it. You can barely find one under $100k on a lot. They haven't made a lot of them and you can no longer even order one for '22. '23 will likely be last year of the 392 (replaced by the HO Hurricaine). It is a special car.

What other vehicle can you go anywhere and enjoy front and rear locking diffs, swaybar disconnect, nice appointments, lifted from the OEM with 35s, bead-lock capable bronze wheels, a beefed up chassis, and a 6.4 Hemi that takes you from 0-60 in 4.2 with 4.56 gears. Not much power, but it was geared so low we could go up and down really steep grades easily. It just kinda slowly pulled you up those steep hills. It was reliable and built to withstand just about anything. But driving on the street was very much like torture. This thing you just tested looks like it would be a real hoot to drive both on and off road, but I don’t think you could really put that much power to use off road unless you were in some kind of desert race. I like Rubicons and I love Hemis…but unless I hit the lotto I don’t think this would be great investment. Just my $.02. I enjoyed the video and your insight.

One thing you didn't touch on was the fuel demands of the Rubicon 392. Obviously with the lower MPG because of the 6.4L, you're going to burn through a lot of what that 392 requires, and that's Premium grade fuel. As much as I wanted a 392 when they came out, I had a feeling that fuel prices were going to increase eventually, and being that you have to put Premium fuel in the tank, that was the deal breaker for me. Had they gone with a 5.7 like in my Ram Rebel, that would have been easier on MPG and fuel costs. When they start dropped the I6 Hurricane in these, that'll be a game changer.

Why I never even contemplated buying one. Then when they do put a v8 in it, they go 80k and 6.4? And wait until gas is climbing and V8’s are on the way out. It’s madness I tel you! 😉

There are plenty of folks with built jeeps costing well over 100K, I am one of them. The Wrangler 392 gives me what I want and that is power, the V6 is gutless with big tires and I don't like diesels or the turbo lagging 4 banger. Yes I would spend the money on a 392 Wrangler, also looking at future collectability and the fact that these will keep there value well over any hellcat which I also own.

Seems nowadays it’s hard to even find a 5.7 Grand Cherokee. In ‘13 the dealer had both the 3.6 and 5.7 lined up for a test drive. Did the 5.7 first and had no interest in even trying the V6 after that. I think a 5.7 in a Wrangler would have been just perfect (but not for me @ 6’7” and 280lbs I wouldn’t know how to fold me into the driver seat). Currently drive a RAM… would have loved the 392 option without having to go straight to TRX. That said, considering the money I’ve thrown at it so far and I’m not even done, I could and should have had a TRX (got my ‘19 Laramie dec ‘18).

The 392 is the most bang for the buck rubicon you can order. 392 package comes with so much more then just the engine. And on 40 inch tires and Dana 60s with a 4.88 gear I average 15.5 mpg. Worth ever penny!!

I LOVE my 392XR! I even traded my beloved built JKU for it. I was hoping it would be closer to 60k… However, I think its worth the cost if you look at the price of other new cars. This is a special edition vehicle, so of course the price is “special”. It’s a smooth riding go anywhere sleeper! Plus the MPG is basically the same as my JKU was. It’s definitely a niche vehicle, but it checked all my boxes (e.g. V8, small SUV, AWD, 4WD, rugged, fast, mod-able, Wrangler) Also, where are these low priced TRXs at???

Why is everyone saying it should have a 5.7? That engine is ridiculously underpowered for its size by today’s standards and the gas mileage isn’t that far off from the 392. It makes complete sense for Stellantis to use the 392 as the last hurrah for 8 cylinder Wranglers. What doesn’t make sense is how expensive this thing is.

Peeps are flipping them as soon as they get built. The resale of even the standard 392 let alone the 392XR is crazy. It's a no Brainer decision to buy one and now that orders are closed the resale is getting higher. I see them for 100k with 2-4k miles and low optioned...well for a 392 but that's another story. There were only 6400 '21s built. Low production numbers and jeeps always keep good resale value.

@@michaeldawson4087 I pick my 392XR up on Friday. Most dealers are asking close to $100k+ for any that are on a lot. The low production numbers and rarity make them valuable. I see '21 392s with several thousand miles still going for $85-$90k.
