The 30MPH Road Bike Challenge | Can Si Break 20 Minutes For A 10 Mile Time Trial?

Спорт

Over the past months we’ve seen Ollie demonstrate that super aero bike tech can make even the most mediocre cyclist look like a speed demon. Both in the velodrome during his hour record and on the road in his recent time-trial efforts, proper aero kit can make you really fast - 30mph fast!
We wanted to try something a little different though, instead of going all-out for aero gains, we wanted to see if Si could go fast enough to get a sub-20 minute 10-mile time-trial on a bike that he would ride and race on the road. With some help from our friends at Nopinz, we kitted out Si on a road-going Pinarello F12 to see if he could average over 30mph for an entire 10-mile TT on a road bike!

@@taranhase4396 Oh we weren't as fast as that back then. The "juvenile" (under 16) national record back then was....well actually it was set the same day I did my 19:51...20:13 (Ceri Pritchard*). The first sub 20 min ride by a junior was only the year before me (Richard Montgomery 19:59 in 1992, bettered by Chris Ball (19:48) and then Zak Carr (19:37) in the same year IIRC). I was the 4th junior rider to ever manage the feat AFAIK 😁Just little idea of what power I was putting out, as we didn't have such things. But the effort ought to have been good, as I won 2 national junior TT titles in 1993! *Ceri actually beat his own juvenile record in early 1994 with a 19:59. Weird how I can remember all these things, yet more recent things have gone from my mind completely.

I had just started cycling when David Akam set his nineteen minutes an 55 seconds competition ride on the G213. Cycling weekly did a report on the race and I remember they mentioned that the weather conditions were dead calm just before a thunder storm arrived. The only other rider doing those sort of rides then was Sean Yates or 20 Minute Yates as he was know to the time trialling scene then. 20 02 is still an impressive ride, well done.

Well do Si on such a great effort. The damp road conditions probably lost you a few secs, but be proud of what you achieved

Slightly damp road actually makes you faster as long as you don't hit the puddles. Lowers rolling resistance noticeably.

So close! Epic effort 😎 I need some pointers on how to keep my head that low. I broke my C7 vertebrae (similar to Si I believe) a couple of years ago and now really struggle to hold my head that low and still see anything at all!

saw this vid months back, it actually inspired me to try TT style riding on my road bike as theres a 5k flat stretch road between traffic light(just nice start-finish) here thats somewhat low traffic on weekend morning. Still new to road bike cycling(have long distance running background) and so far my best time is 7mins on 5k, 42kmh ave, solo effort . Si is doing almost 48kmh for 20 friggin mins 😱

At 17:00 minutes into the video we see the precise moment when the TT bug bites. 29 years of avoidance obliterated in just 20:02 of riding :-) I suspected it was coming when Si said how much fun it looked at Chew Valley Lake a few weeks ago. See you next year, Si ;-) BTW, fantastic effort!
