The $2M Plan To Age In Reverse - Bryan Johnson

Bryan Johnson is a founder of Braintree and Kernel, a futurist, biohacker and an author.
What does it take to achieve immortality? This is the frontier that Bryan Johnson is beginning to pioneer. Armed with a team of the world’s top researchers and an unlimited budget, he is using cutting edge science and technology to see just how long he can live for.
Expect to learn why Bryan chooses to be on a fully plant based diet, what Bryan Johnson’s full morning routine looks like, the optimal body fat percentage for living longer, why humans are addicted to self-destructive behaviour, why Bryan doesn’t fear death, why Bryan doesn’t use saunas or cold plunges for increasing his lifespan, what his training plan looks like and much more...

    The only flaw is that he has the facial bone structure of a much older man. He looks like an 18 year old who has taken meth. He looks to have lost a lot of fat and bone in the cheekbone area. The guy needs to up his game and regrow his face bones to his 18 year old state somehow. Maybe get some sort of special bone surgery from a cranioplasty surgeon or maybe take human growth hormone. I don't know.

    I absolutely cherish how thoughtful Bryan is. Unless he is sharing data points, he actually stops, thinks, thinks again, then responds. What a world we could live in if people in general be so thoughtful with their responses.

    (Maybe like others) I wrote him off as a lunatic at first, but after actually reading about his project and listening to what he has to say, I am very impressed and fascinated. He talks about how this whole project has turned him into a more thoughtful, kinder version of himself. He comes across genuine and down to earth… never thought I’d say that about an ultra-rich person 😂. It’s easy to be outraged and get hung up on details like the number of pills etc. To me, it all boils down to someone with the financial means offering himself like a guinea pig to optimize his health/longevity, making every step of the way transparent and publicly accessible and sharing the findings so that we can benefit from it collectively, if we are open to it. To answer your “what a world we could live in”… a pretty close to perfect one, I imagine ❤

    Obsession with mortality is not a new troupe. Every affluent civilization, after reaching a certain critical mass, and having had overcome the basic challenges, succumbs to ever growing hedonism, narcissism and desire for immortality. It always ends the same way. As for mortality it self, it's not a problem what needs to be solved. No more then water being wet would be a problem in need of a solution. Longevity, yea.. but even that, is already known. Good food, physical activity, low stress and clean air.. n u got it. No human being will ever achieve even 200 years.. its antithetical to our biology. Aging can be slowed, but not completely nor fundamentally. Cells still degrade. Its basically all vanity, is all it is. U want immortality? The closet thing, is have children n raise them well.. that's about it.

    I've watched lots of interviews with Bryan and think he is truly revolutionary. He also remembers vividly the depths of despair and depression he sunk to so still has the ability to understand how it feels to be at rock-bottom. This is why he is so compassionate with his words to those people still down there. A beautiful mix of spirit and science.

    Compassion and empathy could be crucial elements in pursuing a journey or embarking on a project similar to his. Exploring and adhering to the scientific principles of improving/optimising physical and mental health -and ultimately the application of it, requires direct understanding of suffering, growth and other human experiental byproducts. The basis for this understanding is emotional intelligence which highly correlates with empathy, relating to the experience of others. Helping others thus naturally follows when improving one's own self, at least in this regard. Unless you somehow view it as a competition in a zero-sum game, which some do I'm sure. 😂 Alleviating suffering offers shared benefits. Improving my own outcomes improves the outcomes of others, and the other way around. Focusing on health and longevity IS the way forward.

    In January 2023 I was a 68 year old retired overweight, sedentary female. Bloated, tired, resigned to my elderly state of mind. On January 8, 2023+I looked at myself in the mirror and realized I was fat and unmotivated. I was laying in the bed all DAY LONG. No energy. Then. Something in me snapped. I decided to change. I had worked out with weights for 25 years before stopping 15 years ago. So I started again. Being an RN and a former fitness trainer I had great knowledge on how to weight train. So off to the gym I went and began a sensible weight training program along with cardio. I also educated myself on the latest information regarding foods and optimal diet. So I did one meal a day, mostly meat, no grains, no sugar, no fruit, no vegetable oil, etc. NO ALCOHOL It was a bit hard with the weights because I was so out of condition and recovering was hard at my age. But…..amazing things began to happen. VERY QUICKLY. I quickly lost the weight, I gradually became more conditioned and motivated. By MAY 2023…. Five months….I was in fantastic shape. When I went to my functional medicine doctor for my yearly visit, she was stunned. She said, “Sheri. I’m not talking to the same woman I talked to a year ago. You look years younger. Your energy is that of a very healthy young individual. Your muscle mass is excellent, your body fat is amazing. What happened?” People. That was after only FIVE months of just being consistent, educated, determined, and focused. I even had cheat days. At 68 years old, fat and out of shape, I took five months and changed everything. I now am actually stronger and lift heavier, and am in the best shape of my life. You can do it. IM NOT AN ELITE ATHLETE. I was an old, fat, unmotivated, depressed woman. All you need is a good trainer and the education on how to do it, plus focus, commitment, and consistency. Also……meditation with raise your frequency. Raise your mental frequency and your body follows.

    Quotes that I love about the podcast: "My main source of inspiration is having read hundreds of biographies. I love learning about people in their time and place that were able to work on impossibly hard things so talent is the ability to hit the target no one else can, GENIUS hits the target no one else can SEE and the majority of us in life, we play the games that society gives us so that's hitting the target. So currently social media followers. People like to play games where points can be kept and you can be compared to people and ranked. GENIUS is a different GAME, it's trying to find things that DON'T EXIST and you need to have stamina and fortitude to go out and pave your own path and do things that are not recognized, appreciated or valued even in your LIFETIME. So to me reading biographies is about people who do that. They really try to survey all of existence, they are somehow IMMUNE to their time and place and are able to see these things." "So I like working with the concept of GEN ZERO of this idea that a group of humans walking into the future that is willing to divorce themselves from all human norms and customs.

    @@rl7012 I never "insulted" you, that was your own making. And it perfectly "proofs" that you haven’t reached that type of intelligence, but you can if you want! And sorry if it came across like that... The type of intelligence that Bryan is speaking of is a more spiritual one, the one we call "consciousness" not biological intelligence.... And Consciousness is something we cant really grasp yet scientifically, its very hard to prove the awareness that knows that "I exist" But you can grasp it from you own experience, but after you have you cant really "prove it" That would be the same as you "proving" the EXAKT dream you had last night. But the difference here is that when you "awaken" your consiussness more, you’ll see that life itself is a "dream" So as you become more "self aware" you will automatically start becoming more "aware" of everything around you also, since the awareness can only go so far if its only "self aware" And there you will se the greater intelligence that we all carry. And compassion is born! But don’t take my word for it, experience it yourself 😁

    Chris asks a direct question; Bryan answers the question in the abstract, but references the protocol... Rinse, repeat. I found this interview a bit maddening and at times, it seemed more like the subject was more interested in trying to sound interesting than he was in having a conversation or providing any insight. At the same time, he is very well spoken... If he was maybe a quarter more direct in his responses, I feel like he would be more effective in delivering a message.

I am glowing internally and externally and without the testing I can’t be sure. There’s so many bio markers I can check. My stool it comes out nice light brown and it even has a good shape and it’s not hard. My piss isn’t dark or clear. It’s a light yellow. My skin and hair are very nice. Pain is less and my mood swings are much easier to handle. So many protocols I have changed in the last year. Fasting feels good and then it sucks. I feel that we follow our bodies we will be finding success. Eliminating the minds thoughts and just going with the yum, yuk, and Meh Andrew Huberman brings up is my best way to check bios. Changing what we do is the habit that we can get used to that helps the most, IMO. Checking the box and keeping habits that add to well being. Of course you can’t get high or drunk

Google sent me to an article stating he broke up with his partner after her cancer diagnoses because she was “a net negative.” I mean, it was just an article on the internet; it’s likely wrong and she could have been a nightmare too, but it definitely sounded like something he would say. “Your cancer diagnoses will take years off my life.”

    An excellent interview! I love deep questions and I think the guest was caught off-guard by them which gave genuine, non-scripted answers. Good job! After he said that he was depressed - most likely from being just utterly tired, sleep deprived, malnutritioned, without engaging social life, not working out or doing anything good with the body and so on - I thought that now that he has resources (time and money) to finally focus on himself, he ran into it headlong just as fiercly as he probably ran his businessess: to the 100%. And it actually looks like a 0-1 approach, as if everything he did previously was bad (apparently not if he built and sold a big company...), and now he will do everything differently. The words "the mind is dead" sounded like a complete lack of trust towards himself. That's actually very sad. The very hard and I'd say cold focus on "data" and "facts" also overlooks the very well known fact, that intuition and sudden breakthroughs are solidly based on facts that the conscious part of our mind couldn't connect. But does he have a space for a gut feeling, for an intuition? It's not scheduled. It's not "data", it's a "feeling". But since he said he reads biographies he must know that plenty of breakthrough ideas came to life due to such leaps of faith. What also caught my attention which fits this 0-1 aproach is the usage of words "genius", "breakthrough" and so on. He has a full narrative behind it. Splitting personalieties and choosing which ones are favourable looks like a risky path. It's better to understand one's shadow and its needs than to neglect it. "Evening Bryan ate compulsively, he is respoisible of everything bad in my life so I will just switch him off!" - well, maybe The Daily Bryan just didn't pay attenttion to his own needs for decades and at the end of the day a part of him - the one called the Evening one - had to say: "Ok, f... you, I need to do something for MYSELF! Not to neglect my body, not to run a company, not to raise kids, just do something for myself. I'm too tired to work out now, I am burnt out, I need a quick kick of dopamine and I need it NOW, because if I don't get it, you - The Bryan - won't give it to me. Or rather us, *because we are the very same person*. And tomorrow you will be grumpy and say it was all my fault. No, you made us come to this point, you are just as responsible of it as I am. You scheduled our life to not to have any margin for rest or fun or wellness or self-love basically. Oh, and you don't hate me, the "evening Bryan", oh no. You hate all of us. You hate yourself. That's why you are depressed. Think of it while I eat crisps at 11pm." Another path would be: "Hmm, I want to eat junk food at 11pm. Why am I even up at 11pm when I know I need to wake up in 6 hours? What did I overlook, what am I missing, that I'd rather stay up late and make bad decisions? What can I do to improve my life?" If this narrative is difficult to follow, think of the Evening Bryan as of a child. Would you "unauthorize him of making any decisions", or try to understand why is he the way he is and how can you find a common ground? A tired and unloved child will be sad and grumpy and try to fill the void somehow.

    Desire for longevity exists on a scale. We all take care of ourselves to a certain degree. Some people barely take care of themselves at all and others become obsessed with it. But eventually obsessions wither away, and even those folks like Bryan will eventually just get tired of living and allow themselves to pass away.

    You know, I think I agree with you on based on my past thoughts and experiences. However, lately I've wondered if this is a symptom of social shifts and declining health rather than people actually getting tired of living. Sure, there will always be people who need something new, but most elders I know who "got tired of living" had expressed to me that all their friends had passed, they didn't feel connected to the world, and their health was too far gone. Considering this, it has me questioning my thoughts (which match yours here) about whether most people would still get tired of living if they were able to maintain the same social engagement and health of their middle years (30-50).

  • @46positivity

    @46positivity

    Жыл бұрын

    @@isaacengelhardt1934 it certainly raises some interesting questions. We are genetically engineered to live, let's say, roughly 80 years. We are very emotionally invested in the welfare of our children and to a lesser degree our grandchildren. That has to be one of the strongest motivators for self-preservation. But after grandchildren, I assume our emotional investment in our descendants declines rapidly. How would a person's mind respond over time as they lived far beyond that, even if they were physically and psychologically sound? Even with peers around and in good health, when do people simply lose interest in life? How would society at large treat people 200 or 300 or 400 years old? Would they be seen as genetic abominations and be treated with disgust?

  • @isaacengelhardt1934

    @isaacengelhardt1934

    @@46positivity Yeah, "When do people simply lose interest in life?" is the question of the day. Unfortunately, we don't have a good frame of reference (yet, if ever) for that question in a vacuum. As it stands, I still agree with you. In fact, Chris points out what you're talking about when he says not everyone has "longevity" as their priority. In fact, to your point previously about people taking care of themselves to various degrees, you make me confident that individuals will probably neglect longevity just as much as they neglect any health related thing. Even if it became both easily attainable and socially encouraged, I have sincere doubts that the majority of people would uphold it.

And it's not the regeneration protocol that costs billions, it's the research and the measurements. The daily protocol, fruit of the research, uses things that are for most quite cheap and accessible to everyone. About the fear of death and the motivation behind the endeavor : do we care for kids just because we're afraid of them dying? No, it's because nurturing life (including our own) is a wonderful source of joy and hope. Take care.

A person is comprised of many layers, like an onion, from which peeling layers has its hardships and epiphanies from which he discovers something about himself. For that reason, despite the challenges, there is a form of authentic happiness derived. It’s also very lonely to be disciplined unless others have the same values both to the tangible and intangible results that come with such endeavors. Reducing entropy is not a good goal. Every day you are negentropic anyway. Its called metabolism. Avoiding unneccesary damage whilst good does not go to the heart of rejuvination which is a latent capacity that needs to be turned on. its already in us, but it does not come turned on in the default settings. Higher order regulation of metabolic and trasncriptional spaces is actually a thing. The mind is ALIVE. Goal alignment is the whole actualy point of the mind; it is a navigation system. Navigation to perpetual rejuvination means navigating to rebuilding the system constantly as if you are an embryo building it for the first time My mind is my most powerful resource for engaging in the felt complete present physicality of myself. Thats where the rejuvination must happen so thats where the mind must live. For rejuvination to be perpetual in the body, it must also be perpetual rejuvination of the mind. Not my nemesis, not a bit. Its great that this gives him a way to stabilise his obvious base level instability though, and taming his self recognised capacity to bullshit to himself and everyone else is actually a very useful thing. In that respect he has made himself some progress towards a scientific mindest. For the actual scientific technical future of regenerative medicine check our Michael Levin's work on limb regeneratiion and bioelectric circuits of cognition throughout the entire body.
