The 2024 M4 Mac Lineup! (INSANE POWER!)

Ғылым және технология

Everyone is focused on the new M4 iPad Pro, but what I actually found the most interesting is that Apple just announced a new M4 chip and that tells us a lot about the future M4 Mac roadmap including how powerful these next generation M4 Macs will be, how much memory bandwidth, the future release date of the entire Mac lineup, how Apple might not release anymore M3 Macs, and a really important change to how Apple is manufacturing their M4 chips... and it might not be for the better.

The only thing holding the iPad back is its own OS. It’s incredible performance for its form factor. Considering the touchscreen capabilities and accessories, it has the most potential to bridge MacBook and iMac as a ‘everything product’ offering. iPad is a few steps from being your laptop, desktop and tablet.. but ipadOS refuses to give it full functionality. MacOS on an iPad would most likely make products like MacBook Air a hard sell. The Apple approach is: separate products and features -> make products work better together -> buy them all and be happy So I agree, it’s a Ferrari engine in a scooter. The device is fine, its the OS

Is Gurman working for Apple? We know he's not always right. It makes no sense that Mini, Studio and Pro will get M4 in 2025 (!) H2 (!). When these Macs are low volume Macs. Here's the thing.... the yearly volume of all products: iPhone ~220 million units IPads ~60 million units Macs ~22 million units For iPhone probably 160 million will have the latest chip. For Macs, more than 80% should be MacBooks so ~18 million. How many iPad Pro is Apple sellinh per year? iPad Pro should be a minority on yearly basis but sell very good in the launch quarter. For MacBooks we know that Air is the best selling, then comes the "fake Pro" model. This is the BIG volume. The true Pro models are not seling THAT good. The most important product is iPhone. 50% of the yearly volume for the latest iPhone is sold much faster than 50% of the year. That's why Apple could release MBP M3 and iMac M3 at Halloween 2023 and that's why MacBook Air M3 had to wait to march 2024. So for iPhone 16 (new N3E process) it's a new thing. IPhone is no longer first with the latest process. So how is Apple thinking this time? We know that N3E will have much bigger volumes than N3B (M3 and A17). Apple got room for a few low-volume products with N3E before iPhone16. We just saw iPad Pro M4. Apple is selling only ~4 million desktop Macs per year (1 million per quarter) where iMac is probably a big player. iMac and Mac Mini combined are doing probably much more than 50% of the desktop volume. Mac Studio and Pro combined are doing 150k/quarter in volume? That's only 50k units per month. Compare this to the latest iPhone that's selling ~13 millions per month in average and much more the first months and less than that the latest months so 15-20 millions per month the first 2 months? So the BIG question: how much room is there for more M4 (N3E) product launches before iPhone 16? We know that new iMac, MacBook Air and MacBook Fake-Pro are out of the question. Probably also Mac Mini. MacBook True Pro, Mac Studio and Mac Pro are the lower volumes and especially Mac Studio and Mac Pro (Tower and Rack). So this is why there is a realistic chance for Mac Studio M4 and Mac Pro M4 at WWDC 2024. I don't say it will happen but IF we will see any new N3E (M4 and A18) based products it will def be Mac Studio and Mac Pro. Apple don't need two years to try to techically fit M4 into Studio and Pro after the M2 models when Apple did it at 1 1/2 years for iPad Pro and the real reason was when TSMC was ready. I need a Mac Studio and I hope for M4 at WWDC 2024! If there's no Studio M4 at WWDC 2024 then I have to think of how I gonna do with buying a new Mac. M3 Max got no "Dual M3 Max connector" so Apple never planned M3 for Studio and Pro. Apple is probably doing the chip design 1-2 years ahead of the release. And they have to send the design to TSMC very early. TSMC probably had the M4 design before that "Scary Fast" event at Halloween 2023. Mass production for N3E started in 2023 Q4 according to TSMC themselves. They probably already are making a lot of A18 chips now so Apple can build up a huge inventory of that one. We also know that N3E got much better volumes than N3B. So let's wait and see how Apple will do: how Apple will roll out all products based on N3E. May 2024: iPad Pro M4 June 2024: MAYBE Studio+Pro M4 Sep 2024: iPhone 16 A18 Fall 2024: probably MBP M4 and iMac M4 and IPad Mini A18 Spring 2024: probably Mac Mini M4 and iPhone SE 4 (A18) WWDC 2025: probably AVP M4 Fall 2025 and beyond: iPad Air M4, iPad A18 Apple got a lot of N3E based products in the pipeline. Where will they fit Studio M4 and Pro M4? Honestly WWDC 2024 is the most likely. I'm not a "Gurman 2" or so. I'm just saying what's likely/logical. And remember, in 2025 H2, Studio M2 and Pro M2 are more than 2 years old (launched in june 2023). That's not logical... that's embarrasing.

The 3nm N3E is a new node, so the yield is lower than expected. You'll need to launch the lesser models first since they can include binned chipsets. A Mac Studio will only have non-binned chipsets, so they probably need to wait for the yield to improve. Yield and cost per unit are directly correlated as Apple pays for the wafer, so Apple has to maximise each wafer to keep the cost per unit down.

M3 is a really good chip, depends on what you plan to use the computer for? If it's Motion graphics, video editing, then an M3 max or M3 pro is fine. The highest has the fastest exports. If you're planning on doing 3D work, then maybe wait for the M4 chip because it might optimize the ray tracing and probably work better than the M3 ray tracing. Also if price is a concern, then getting a discounted M3 is better since you'll get a higher chip for cheaper, but if price isn't an issue then just wait to see what M4 offers, and wait for the specs from KZreadrs to see if it's 3D is a big difference versus M3.

So, the only desktop it will be used on is Apple's 24-inch iMac which, of course missed out on the M-2 processor. However, this does give me hope (and development time for Apple) for a newly designed "space gray" 30-inch iMac Pro with a M-4 pro chip and an M-4 max chip in the Fall of 2025 or the Spring of 2026. So logical to move to the cheaper manufacturin when it's ready (and N3B and N3E are not compatible, so required a full redesign on the chip, so it would be a wast to redesign the M3 again to N3E)

By the way, I’ve said it before: the Mac Pro should have been designed with four motherboard slots to accommodate four M4 Ultra SOCs, or possibly eight M4 Ultra SoCs ( two SoCs per daughterboard). That would have really made the Mac Pro a flagship product (and blown the doors off of Tower Intel or AMD PCs).

I think Apple should cap the M4-7 Max memory at 256 gb which is a lot I know. They should get rid of the 8 gb memory on the M4 for Mac and make lower memory an IPad thing. I also see Apple going for 16 tb storage on the Mac Studio and Mac Pro. Maybe the M4 Extreme comes out next year……

I think there is a change in the marketing strategy with releasing the M4 in the Pro iPad and also in the desktop versions first. Then the MacBooks later - for a trickle down approach, rather than the bottom up approach. Once a M4 Ultra, Max, or Pro version is in a desktop, M2/3 MacBook owners will jump at the new chip. Oh, let's not forget a possible M4 Extreme chip for only the Mac Pro to justify the cost and for high end developers/studios who eat these things up like bar peanuts. This approach makes sense to me and will sell more devices rather than keep the high end users waiting so long.

I have no info, but it does seem reasonable that Apple is designing more for the M series chips and working back to the A series chips. I think that we will see an M4 based studio and Pro before we see the airs updated. I have my doubts about the Gurman timeline. Time will tell. But when we look at how aggressive Apple is with the iPad, it seems that they will be more aggressive on the Mac than Gurman is predicting.

Seems like Apple will have plenty of options available for entry-level products moving forward. The addition of M2 and M3 variants in future base MacBook Airs, Minis, iPads, Apple TV etc can offer buyers lower priced units will all the Apple panache, world class fit and finish and full ecosystem compatibility. I do wish that Apple would take a stronger run in gaining PC market share. It is an area where they room to grow.

I definitely hope Apple does NOT bring OLED to the MacBook line - at least not as the only option. OLED still has burn in issues. It definitely has advantages, but it's not great for devices that have to display the same image(s) for long periods. We're already seeing burn in from OLED laptops from other brands. I even had some burn in on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Mini-LED isn't perfect, but at least a Mini-LED display can be left on the same image for long periods without risking burn in.

Apple is not their competition despite what they want you to think. Nobody will cross shop Macs and PCs or even iPads and Android tablets. Besides they will have more than enough to worry about with app developer support, compatibility and driver issues, all sorts of random products that will have first gen teething issues, etc. Trying to move the world off x86 to a new architecture has been tried many times in the past and the road is covered with bodies. Apple made it look easy because the tight vertical integration but Windows / Android will have no such luck.

The M4 can perform 38 TOPS of AI calculations but the Snapdragon X can do 45 TOPS. Apple said that it was the fastest AI processor available so I wonder how they are calculating it? Maybe Qualcomm are overstating their performance? Also the A17 Pro can already do 35 TOPS so seems like a lacklustre upgrade.
