Clear and woody is a very good way of describing a guitar.
I like the 73 the best.Big headstock and the rosewood board you can’t beat it.
The 69 just blow me away sounded so so good
‘65 is totally my type of vibe 😍
The 63 is my choice. The sound, the color..perfect.
It amazes me how you continue to invent comparisons that are original and inspiring! You're truly blessed with talent, skills and great friends! Thanks for sharing brother!Be Well!

Thanks brother, I'm really glad you like it!
I remember reading a article with Roger Mayer asking if jimi Hendrix preferred the big head stock strats to the pre cbs ones and his response was *strats in London were expensive and back then nobody cared if it was pre or post cbs... they all pretty much sounded the same. * and this video is a clear indication of that. There's so little variation between the sound of these strats other than output... That's really it.... they all sound really good and not at all that much different
@nlumby
3 жыл бұрын
agree, far less difference than the Les Pauls - surprising
62, 63, 61, 54... and I could hear quite a distinction in timbre going from rosewood to the maple fingerboards..
69’, 67’, 63’ blew me away... Thanks Johan - great job and effort
I might be biased but it's still the 54 for me. I read only an estimated 1300 strats were made in 54. Which was the first year. So a real gem. I would love to own something like that. a piece of History. Have a good weekend.

I also read that the Stratocaster wasn't just another model for fender. It was a total replacement for the Telecaster. But somebody convinced leo to keep making the Telecaster. He said why have a Telecaster now that the Strat is here. But I guess he lost that argument.

@@guitarocd9984 I agree!! I have two strata BUT when I get the chance to play on my buddy’s new tele with lipstick pickups, It’s Raw. Crunchy with country. I’m glad they kept it around for sure’
The 61 sounds niiiiiice! Full and sustaining in every position but still got the Strat-y top end Thanks so much for this video, this is nuts how you got access to so many vintage Strats...
They all sound the same- awesome!
I can't thank you enough for putting this together, even though I've tried. It's such an entertaining demonstration of the best invention ever, the electric guitar. I wouldn't even complain if it came with a bill for services rendered. I'll remember this forever

The 50’s Strats have very different pots and pickups. I am not sure but they use 150k pots in the 50’s then they went to 250k. So I am not sure that is the maple
That 67 stands out! Just to be followed by the 54! Great comparison! Thanks & cheers!

A lot of players trash talk the big headstock, CBS era stratocasters from the late 60s and early 70's, but I grew up on those guitars and some of them were the best strats I had. In the early 1980s, classic rock players were all trying to acquire "pre CBS" strats, but it you know your classic rock history, most of the greatest guitarists of the time, were using stock strats, watch any videos from the late 1960s throughout the 1970s, From Pink Floyd, Ritchie Blackmore, Robin Trower, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, etc., they're all using fat headstock strats ( watch David Gilmour on Pink Floyd's "Live at Pompeii", he's recording with a black 1969 stratocaster ( the body would later be bolted to a 50s neck, and used on Pink Floyd's THE WALL). Ritchie Blackmore still uses 70s strats today, because of their unique sound quality ( it's not true that they're trebley, and thin, you have to work with your amp, like any other guitar). Acquaintances of mine, try to get that bell like Hendrix tone, out of a 57' strat. Use a stock 1968 CBS strat, and you'll nail it every time. That's what Hendrix played. Only his early guitar was a mid 60s model, the rest were 68, 69 strats (Experience/Band of Gypsies etc.) Even Robin Trower still has 70s style strats made for him, by Fender Custom shop, because of their unique sound

Bravo 👏 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
They do get a little fuller and clearer as you go back in time.
First time I comment on this channel. Following it since the early days. This is awesome. What a great place to celebrate tone! Guitars, amps and so much more. Thanks Johan for all your work. From Montreal, Qc. The 58 and 67 for me. The 69 also get a special place in my heart! 😋

Max Max both works for me (i did DIY a 808 clone and it's pretty ok) BUT i'm mainly using my reissue '59 which i had built a very simple attenuator to 50% into and inspite of tube-removing it still is very loud (not compatible with an urban apartment - i live both in the countryside and suburban)
Incredible work, thx soo much my Friend !!!!
I like how each pickup is different for each year alot of differences in the details that's what makes this particular comparison so unique as always Johan great work you make youtube land a better place for its viewers

This was superb!
thx johan and friends. a truly wonderful oeuvre. saw it 4 times, always discovering new favs. would consider dubious activities for 73, 54, 63, though...
I think the '74 followed by the '73 sounded the most radically different than the others. The '74 was fuller sounding with more bottom end & the '73 also fuller but with a more pronounced midrange . The '66 '62, '73 & '74 in that order would be my choices as the best sounding overall..I was a little surprised at how weak the 50's models sounded compared to the 60's & the '55 especially had a dead flat sound.
That '67 has something special. But the '54 is the best of the lot. '56 and '58 are right up there too.
Great work as usual. I was really very surprised at how much each guitar had a difference in tone and timbre. I just assumed all these guitars would deliver a very similar sound. By far my favourites were the '57, '65 and '74. They were all unique in how they sounded and all delivered three of the best Strat tones I've vera heard.
Awesome! I can't decide which one I like the most!

56, Brownie. Derek and the Dominoes. Layla. The best.
My favorite is ,, Fender Stratocaster 1974 ! look is amazing
the 66 is your best guitar - it has the most natural gain and resonance - I do prefer a little dirty though - Hendrix Vibe
54 , 73 & a tie between 65 & 66 were my favorites !
1960 Fender Stratocaster WOW!
My 3 favorites were 64....60 and 55.....but I wouldnt turn any of them away....lol.....great video guys!!!
54 maple and 60 rosewood perfect tone, perfect balance
Yep, they all sound like Strats👍👍Thats why we love em!!
Great stuff as usual Johan ! . I will take the white 62' thanks ! 🤗
71 all the way! Love the way that guitar sounded. Also, the bigger headstock looks so much better
To my ears, (67 years old), the newest guitars sounded more spanky and the progressively mellow/ warner the older they got, but the bright element returned as they git to the maple 50s ones. To me, going from the '54 bridge to the '74 middle was interesting, different but not as I would have anticipated. An excellent example of the spot on great work you present to us Jon, you always come up trumps with your content, pace and presentation, thank you. ...im a bit jealous of you playing all those strats though.....😂
Thank you...
All very consistent until around 66 then they all have an individual sound. Very interesting Great Work!

Awesome man, 73 sounded best to me thanks
It is amazing how good the first one(54) is!
Great review. Everyone can choose favorite sound. Maple neck has a good attack like yngwie, this middle is busy. Rosewood are more bassy like a Stevie Ray. This video greatlly can tell you more a diferency about these big 2 question.
All lovely. Some differences in pickup gain from one to another. I would fave 74,66,65,64,63 and all from before 1960. But none of them is even slightly bad.
Damn... some serious tone going down in this video! Reminds me of why I still love strats, after all these years.

That 62
My favorites are the late 1950's & 60's Strats, specifically the Mary Kay Strat (1957) the 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1965. I would love to have a birth year Stratocaster (1964) as well. The only one after 1965 I liked was the red one. I'm not a fan of the large headstock or maple fingerboards, although I have a Strat with a maple fingerboard, its an exception. I have two others with rosewood fingerboards and that is what I prefer. This was a great overview and test, hopefully you could do some Les Pauls in this was as well. Great job as always!
The 1962 sounds the best in all settings, specially in c!ean, sounds punchy

Those early 60's slab board strats are my dream guitars
that 1969 ❤
69 and 71 for me, but then often others to...love that riff Simon plays, righr after your intro riff.and your final riff...seems that is made for Strats! Sometimes I have the feeling the maple finger board is more fluent and sounds more crisp in some casss...but then hearing the other many guitar I think has to do with repeating riffs so often.and I love the clarity inbetween slightly distorted twang with many bends....tremendous amount of work, well dome! Hey which one (s) played and sounds the best between you and Simon? I followed all your LP stuff.. And the R9 was the Holy grail so far, your play and recommendation spot on!!!! Same to the speakers the greenback heritage another holy grail for me! Now entering a new field... And being hooked. will pull out 4 Strats and teles today and hear how they would sound..on a newly added Orange Qr 15 head.. may find also some strat adjustment on it? ( certainly on the Greenback 55 H) After all I wonder whether you get yourself a vacation at one point..you add always nice Pics / movs from the beautiful surroundings.? Finally it is needless to say this vdo beats the standard by far! Big Thanks Johan
The 61, 66 and 73 all have the sound I try and find in a strat
Dam Dam Dam probably the best video ever. The strat such a beautiful and perfect design. I'll take a strat with a beefy "U" neck, I believe a 56'.
Still loving the 55 & 58 from the first video, but for me the ONE ☝️ is the 66❗️
The 54 is incredible. So balanced. Also... how rare is it that someone absolutely nails something on their very first try.. wish i could ask mr fender cause in 54 he nailed it.
I was surprised. I like the '71 and the '73 best. Truth be told they all sounded very similar to me but that '66 was a monster!
Splendid video Johan. Btw did you find more differences from one model to another in this shootout or in the one you made with vintage Les Pauls? Cause maybe it's due to my laptop speakers, but the strats here all sounded spectacular, but rather similar at times?
Strong video. IMO the Strat is the prime tone and all others are secondary. Picking from this lot is a dart throw. Cant lose with any of these as a favorite.

Hi ! I have a black strat from august 1971, all original, rosewood fingerboard, 4 bolts, 1 string tee. And it sounds more like your '66 red one ! cheers from France.
I'm amazed the 65 and 62 for R/W strat that sounds big!
The 73 must have blackback pickups because it sounds more like an early to mid sixties. Amazing demo!
That 54 holly shit! 56 and 55 aren't bad too. Awesome guitars. And from the 60's the 65 is great! But it's hard to choose, too much guitars in that video.
The Stratocaster sounded the best.
