I’m in my 12th year teaching. I agree that we need to build positive relationships. Kids can see and they know who is genuine and who is fake. I greet my kiddos at the door and make eye contact/say hello/give real compliments. I also believe in moving around the room. I never teach from the front/desk or stay still. This movement helps a lot. I stay a moving target.

This is my 7th year teaching, and your tips are 100% right! These things have always made classroom management pretty easy for me.

My question about consistency has always been, what do you do about consistency when it comes to students with disabilities that affect their behavior in class? How do we keep that confidentiality and still honor the accommodations they need?

I agree that the relationships are such a key to gaining trust and respect from students. I taught sixth grade Language Arts for two years, and when my homeroom girls asked me if they could straighten my hair during homeroom sometime, I knew I had won them over! Btw, I politely thanked them for the offer but turned them down, saying it was school and not a slumber party, and we got a good laugh!

I've been in management for some time now and also have an MSML degree. Recently, due to Covid, I have shifted my sights towards teaching and find it borderline terrifying that the concept of building student/teacher relationships is new to the teaching industry. Truly effective management has always revolved around the strength of the relationships between admin/employee.

As a trainee teacher in the UK (on the pgce course) I have loved your channel for a while. These are things that have already crossed my mind but I needed that reminder. Actually one of my targets is to make sure that my behaviour management is consistent across the board. I just find it difficult sometimes. But I agree that relationship is important, when I get my first proper classes next year, relationships with them is at the forefront of my mind

Hello fellow UK teacher :) Consistency is key but I completely understand what you mean about it being difficult sometimes. I think have a clear vision about what you want to be consistent about so that you have a default to come back to. And know that there is always a grey area but most of the time, if you have clear rules and expectations to be consistent about, you shouldn't have too many of those situations. Relationships take time to build so think about it long-term. Sofia x

Yeah! Teacher to students relationship is more important. And that was me hehe😅 but I think it's bad on the other side but i think the balance of relationship and strick in classroom. I'll always give my reflection after i teach to my students.

Great video! I had problems with consistency on my first year of teaching because the place I worked at favored students based on family connections and the like. Even if I tried to grade everyone the same, eventually, I would face private meetings where administration would force me to grade some students higher despite the fact that their work lacked the standards. This then led to no one respecting me in the classroom because they knew there was no solid basis for grading :( what do you recommend in this case?

I'm only a regular sub in a urban district and have been praised by my administrators about my classroom management and all I do is create relationship with my students right off the bat and I have one of the lowest amount of write ups in the school.

By the way , tell those teachers that put their content over relationships that if they do not have a good relationship with the student(s) the lesson(s) and the content dies on arrival . I completely agree and do my best O follow these, however I've just picked up a class where 50 percent don't want to be there and want nothing to do with me. I'm at a loss with what to do, trying a seating plan failed, detention has failed, asking for their input has failed and I don't want to just tough it out for the next 15 weeks. What do you do when all your ideas fail you?

This is going to sound ass-backwards, but try surveying them to find out what they want to learn about. Abby from Write On With Miss G on Instagram talked about this type of a survey to figure out what students will engage with, and then build your content around that... This is where thematic units can save us! I'll look and see if the survey is saved in her highlight...

um did eveyone think she didnt even have coffee in her coffee cup!
