As a current English Education major, I would love to see a walk-through of how you take your state standards, reword them, and utilize them effectively and efficiently in planning and assessment.

Thank you for this! I'm a junior in my school's secondary English Ed. program at the moment, and last semester we talked a lot about rubrics. I appreciate the two different versions you use, since making sure students were receiving valuable feedback in conjunction with their grades was something we talked about a lot. I also am interested by how you only have three possible numbers they can receive for each category! We discussed the problem of "regressing to the mean" if you have something larger like a 5 point scale, so I like how much more simple your system is. I'd love to see the writing unit video! I'm in a class presently where we will end up writing an entire year's curriculum for a writing-only course...yikes. But your videos always give me and some of my classmates inspiration. Thank you so much!!

I like that you distinguish between feedback and grades, which are different things. For me, feedback is a process, and the grade is on the rubric.

Love your videos! I am the only English teacher at a tiny public school so I do not have anyone to collaborate with, so sometimes I'm unsure if what I am doing is a best practice that other teachers are doing elsewhere, especially if it's a method I came to on my own. Your videos are such wonderful validations that I'm doing the right thing :-)

Hi. Great video. One of my goals this year is to have rubrics for each assignment. I would really like that link on how to plan an entire unit. This is what I have struggled my entire career with. Many times I put something together that morning and it’s not good. Once I have a unit planned then I would love to share with my high school ELA students the plan for the week. As it is now, the students don’t know what is coming during the week and that is not good. Thank you.

Love the 3 point idea and would like to know more about how you use that. Our school uses SBG too but it is A, B, C, NC for exceeds, meets, approaches, no credit. Many students are satisfied with the C grade approaches, just to pass the class, and it’s easy to achieve if they turn in anything. I teach CTE skill building classes and I’m often re-writing the rubric to clarify.

LOVE your ideas and the time you add to my life outside of school! Questions about the 3-point rubric: Is this the rubric on which you give points earned in the columns? Can a student exceed mastery for one standard, but not meet it for another, then the grade is averaged? Thanks!

Saw The Nightingale on your bookshelf... Isn't that an awesome book!?? Thanks for the rubric help. In the midst of planning for fall...it's a tough one this year. Thanks for the support. It's been a life saver. How much time do you give your students between feedback and final essay? I'd love to know how you time it all...I teach in 15 week semesters and it's always a struggle....it's a little longer than a unit, but not long enough for two?!?

Question: Are your rubrics that you use for assessment given before, during, or after the product is completed? I have heard various different ways and like to hear your thoughts. (Or anyone else who sees my question.) Thanks.
