Sadly it wasn’t until the end of the year that I found something that worked with one of my problem children. I told him he wasn’t in trouble but I needed him to come to the front of the room. When he did, I gave him my notes and power point clicker and told him he was teaching the rest of the period. He likes attention, so this actually worked. I’ll definitely keep that one in my toolbox for next year.

You’re singling out that particular student with special treatment and he’s fully aware of the extra attention he’s getting. When he leaves school and enters the real world, all that special treatment disappears and he’ll back to square one. Stick to the school/classroom values and have the same expectations for all students (unless there’s a medical diagnosis), no matter how problematic their behaviour is. Persistence in this regard is how behaviour gets corrected.

@@CrispyHulk1 Many educators cap potential in the classroom. We teach that the sky... no the universe...is the limit...but then we restrict and lecture lecture lecture... This doesn't work with all cohorts. The beauty of working with other people is that each class and each child has varying needs. Sometimes that "special treatment" isn't that at all...it's simply teaching at a higher level of thinking. The key is knowing your students. In the "real world" students can quit working at McDonald's and get special treatment by knowing their worth and working hard and in unconventional ways and work towards a higher position, maybe starting their own company or becoming the head honcho of a conglomerate. They'll figure it out. Our job is not to cap potential. Our job is to self-correct that behavior in healthy ways. That goes towards the whole classroom. Singling out one student is extreme, but not if all students are given spotlights as well. After all, teaching a class is a life skill too. =)

I was butting heads with a student (7th grade) at start of year; she wouldn’t stop talking. Sat with her at recess just to chat; told her that I really liked her personality and praised her for being a good student, but told her that she was letting this behavior/slight attitude overshadow her good attributes. Then we just chatted and I got to know her. She talked less after that and when she slipped up, her attitude toward my redirection was better. And we were building a relationship! Do not under estimate the power of connecting with students.

This is amazing. I realized I'm often talking at students and telling them to get outside and wait for me in the hall and it usually becomes a power struggle. By asking what I did wrong, it completely changes the situation and I'm sure takes a lot of stress off of the teacher. This information is gold!

Hey, brother, I just wanted to give a shout out to you. You are innovative, passionate, and a phenomenal educator. I have watched four of your videos over the past 3 hours, and they are making me totally rethink my teaching. And I have taught since 2003! You are amazing. I would love to create videos like this one day. Keep sharing, keep vlogging, and keep up the passion. One classroom management strategy to add for followers is from a presenter named Jack Berkemeier (sp?) that I heard years ago. It actually works! When the whole room is not paying attention, approach the white board at the front of the room and say, "Oh, Mr. White Board, at least you will listen to me! Thanks so much for not talking while I am teaching. I can always count on you, Mr. White Board." Your students will stare at you, and you might be taken as insane, but hey ... you got their attention, right? Works every time. Well, most of the time. :-)

My first "senior class teaching" went super disastrous 😭😭😭 I literally could not handle those gigantic (6ft) high school students. Teaching juniors 😍😍😍 is quite different from teaching seniors😢😢😢. My routine: Prepare lessons all afternoon and night, have deadliest nightmares, vomit right after waking up, see the students in school and get more nervous, worst of all not being able to deliver what I prepared the whole night as a pro ☹ But I must tell you, seeing you makes me want to go back to high school and do the very BEST as a teacher!!! Because I know I can!!! 😊 Thank you VERY VERY MUCH for making such helpful videos 👌👌👌❣❣❣

You really helped by reiterating that my race is not lost! Until then I feared it was too late. I recently started working in a women's prison with addicts, and although I've run groups before this has had additional challenges. The amount of disruption and lack of respect for my class time has been my biggest obstacle. Being furloughed during this pandemic I decided I could learn more ways to help me with this. I appreciate your help and your personality is just darling.

Ugh, so good. These are things I learned in teacher school, but the stress of everyday teaching has cause me to lose my patience, and unfortunately lose my cool in a lot of situations. I’ve been in that power struggle too many times this latter portion of the year as I’ve lost patience for having those personal one-on-one conversations. I need to get back to that. And I’m so hopeful to implement more consistency in my expectations from day one next year!

What do you have to do a whole classroom full of kids who are being insubordinate. As soon as I start attempting to give out consequences they all start saying “this person was talking and you didn’t say anything g to them! “ Etc.. things are horrific in my classroom. I took a job teaching film studies in West Philly started March 25th. I’m ready to throw in the towel. I would love advice on how to deal with when things get out of control and you have a whole classroom (or 8-10) students rather) who are behaving badly, being disrespectful, loud and insubordinate?

You are simply awesome and you get it. I don't know what your school's demographics are and where you are located but I know your approaches will work in most all urban schools even in the most challenging areas. Your approaches will also work in others-it is about respect and as you said, "relationships with kids." As a seasoned educator (over 25 years), I rarely had classroom issues because I was authentic just as you appear to be and I tried to build relationships with my students. You know you are on track if former students still want to connect with you once they are grown and on their own.

I appointed him to be my ‘co-examiner’ to fill in an evaluation form during their presentation for each friend. It worked like magic. He finally listened attentively to his friends so that he could tick the evaluation check boxes. He even discussed with me to compare our evaluation.

Real Rap With ReynoldsWhen my third child started kindergarten the class sizes were high and they asked for volunteers to help out. I started helping out a little at first then more often. I begin to like the little ones and decided that I like K, 1st, and 2nd the best. When I was in high school I want it to do middle school or high school. I ended up doing management instead. So, when I started volunteering in my daughter's class was when I decided I still wanted to teach and I went back to school. Now, I loved elementary age students.

So hard when you have 2 boys who hate each other, plus four students bullying one and 2 others who try to flirt with the boys, and refuse to learn. I tried talking to them in the Hallway, emailing and calling the parents, assigning a daily participation grade with courteous behaviors, and nothing works because of their animosity towards each other sometimes redirected towards me. ..I 'll try a, job distribution. Loved the video! Thank you for sharing those tips! I agree that relationships are key. You mentioned that your relationships with your students are very strong. As an introverted teacher, how can one possibly develop that beyond the superficial level? What other ways can I make it known that I care besides standing at the door and shaking hands/greeting students? I am a female Science teacher and I've had male middle school students behave awkwardly when I've given them attention. I see them as kids obviously but I guess it's hormones or whatever. Anyway, how do you suggest I handle that? I want to show I care but I still want them to respect me. Also, what consequences are appropriate for students in middle school?

Great vid! I have a question regarding one thing you mentioned: when asking a student if you did anything wrong to upset them due to their misbehaviour and you're just making sure everything's cool (knowing well that you've done nothing)- would that not give them more of a sense of power over you creating a power imbalance? Maybe it's just the students I've taught but I feel like that would make some feel like they'd have power over me because I don't want to 'upset them'? Then again I've not had that chance to build strong rapport (I'm a prac student at uni, internship is next year) so it may work better if you have a class consistently 😄

I would not recommend this either. If there is something I would rather have the kid come talk to me calmly at end of class so. But from these vids we all take what we like or works for us. Internships and work should be a bigger part of tt programs and already in the first year. One other thing, 'I feel like.....' is not a feeling. So if you would like to express your feelings, needs and would like ur students to be able to express theirs it could be a good thing to first distinguish then more clearly. Nvc could be a fantastic help in these situations.

Any tips for a small male teacher. I’m in school to be a social studies teacher I have just a couple more years left for my degree. I have an A type of personality but I a little worried that the kids may not think they have to follow my instructions because I’m small. I’m 5 foot 4 and about 160 pounds I’m physical strong and fit but not very big over all. Hopefully that doesn’t matter but I don’t know.

I work as a languageteacher in a youth psychiatry with kids aged 13-17. I usually get around 4 students in my classroom at a time, which have totally different levels and work on totally different things, if it is possible to work at all. I feel like things are going fine, but it could be more ingaging. Also I never get the same constellation of students twice, they change so often ect. I usually first try to build a connection, then figure out what the new students need to work on and then go from there, but i feel like i could be doing a better job. How would you get more structure into your classes in this type of setting? They come and go during class and that can be a bit frustrating... thanks anyway, i love and appreciate what you do for us teachers. Big ups.

Make a video for substitute teachers please!!!! From the teachers perspective and the subs. I refuse to sub for teachers now that only want you to show videos . Really impossible to engage with students and have any type of a meaningful day. I also understand that many teachers think it’s a total crap shoot on who you get. I sub for 7 different high schools and find some classes are much easier to maintain than others. Some days it’s like shark chum...

Great comments. I would really appreciate class room management tips for subs. Like you I don't sub to babysit but to teach. Some students are totally surprised that I read work they hand in and give them feedback. I try to sub as much as possible in a few schools so that I can learn the culture of the school and build relationships with students and teachers. If you are a sub who shows students you really care about them and are genuinely interested in them it makes such a huge difference. Seating charts make a huge difference in regards to learning student's names, using names makes a huge difference. I like the idea of giving students notes on a sticky note. That is something that I can prep in advance.

Do you have any strategies to control this behavior without using other applications to check their screens? Thanks.

I know you wrote this a long time ago, but I just stumbled upon your comment today and I might have something to help you. I don't know what the ages of your students are but this is what I tell my students that are 6 or 7th grade... I tell them that there is a Web Administrator at the district office that is constantly looking at the sites that the students are on, and that they are keeping a digital catalog of the students' activities. I tell them that I am not going to be constantly looking over their shoulder to make sure they are doing the right thing. I just tell them any suspensions are between them, the principal and the Web Admin. The word "suspensions" usually gets their attention. 😉👍

Thank you so much for this video! Really appreciate it as a graduate teacher. What would you do about students who are constantly having their head on the table (seemingly having headache but it's probably work avoidance) or consistently not taking notes each lesson and they just sit there or they don't do the work? I have talked to these students privately asking them if they are okay, and if I could do anything to help and I tried what you said, however they still come in and not do anything. What advice would you have for this situation?

  • @CJReynolds

I would find a teacher that they do complete work for and then ask them to help you. Sometimes kids need to see that you are willing to go outside of your relationship with them to help them. So for instance, earlier this year I was having no luck with a particular student. However, my good friend, Ms. Cho was having a great deal of success in her classroom with this young man. She and I spoke and then we planned a day that we were going to eat lunch with him and see what we could work out. It went really well. Let me know if that helps. If not shoot me an email and we can figure out a better plan. Thanks Jessica!

Real Rap With Reynolds I showed it to my principal and hopefully we'll be showing this as part of a schoolwide PD on classroom management. I have a behavior form on clipboards in a locker outside my room and kids know to fill one out when I ask them to step outside. It lets them get it off their chest while waiting for me to come speak with them. And it allows them to say it was my fault.

Start a conversation with the second teacher to explain how you feel about the situation. Then for big classrooms the amount of attention you can give your students is limited. Understand this, and try and devote each lesson talking to the individual groups where this is possible.

@@carriwill5468 it's all about respect. Students respect teachers who are impartial, clear, and consistent with expectations. The systems I have are all about rewarding students with choice, freedom, and engagement as long as they act within the framework of those expectations. Ramp up the fun. I don't private conference with students unless I haven't been upholding my end of the bargain(impartial, clear, consistent), I just give them their consequence and move on. My final consequence is isolation within the classroom as long as I have administrative and if I can get it, parent support. That's typically for 1% of students. If you are unable to isolate a student for whatever reason, you're really flipping a coin as to how they behave and it will be impossible to teach them.

I am a Substitute teacher, and I think I know the answer to your question. Some kids have the idea that "RESPECT" is like when you are afraid of a big strong gangster. This idea of respect is hammered into kids from all the videogames, movies, and even their fathers. At one time, I also believed respect has 2 meanings. One being AFRAID of someone. The other meaning to hold someone in high regard or highly esteemed. Then one day I looked up the actual definition in the dictionary. I was SHOCKED to learn that respect has nothing to do with fear! It is only one definition. To hold someone in high regard/highly esteemed. Now... lets take another look at FEAR. That is what bullies and tyrants want. But they don't say, "I want you to be afraid of me".... they say.... You Better Respect Me!!! This is obviously a misuse of the word respect. This misconception explains why your students act up when you treat them nicely. From the macho-man or bully perspective, they simply see you as being weak. You don't demand FEAR... so you are not respectable! This is a great problem because some kids have heroes such as Freddy Kruger or the TERMINATOR... or other Hollywood bullies. Some kids highly esteem these bullies and tyrants!!! I suggest explaining the meaning of RESPECT by having the kids look the word up in the dictionary. Then discuss it with them so they understand that treating each other humanely is not a sign of weakness, or less manliness. It is simply common civility.

Sometimes the teacher is really unprepared or disorganized or lazy and the lesson lags and students get bored. Then some students lose focus and start chatting or disruptimg ---- teachers must first make sure their lessons are engaging enough so as to retain attention as long as possible. And make them move! The energy in these tweens and teens need to be used, and just sitting still for 1 hour is going against nature. Yup, I teach kids and teens from 2 to 16 year olds.
